Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

"Bit more to the left. Bit more. Ok, now bring it down easy." The Yanma complied and carefully lowered the wooden sign. She had been hefting it from a rope gripped in her six clawed feet and was now hovering in place with a gentle buzzing sound. Her Handler took hold of the metal brace on the back of the sign and set a heavy carpenter’s nail into the gap, striking it with a small hammer until it was flush with the wooden beam he was currently kneeling on. After doing the same for the other side and making sure they were both secured, he angled his foot back onto the top of a ladder leaning against the wall of the small storefront. He set the hammer back into his belt once he was on the ground and turned to an elderly man sitting nearby.

Looks good. Maybe a bit more to the left, though.” he paused to laugh from his belly at Denzil’s expression, waving off his possible response. “Just a bit of fun. Seriously though, you have my thanks for getting my sign back up. That blasted storm came through here like a Tauros with a toothache.” After they shook hands Denzil took another look around him at the damage. The recent thunderstorm had been harsh on Dedrius and knocked about more than one residence or shop. Even now he could see a small creature with a bulb on its back a few buildings down, dragging a straw broom in its vines to clean up broken glass from a stone walkway. A saving grace was that the lush vegetation of the area had soaked up most of the water by now, even in there were still large pools of muddy water reflecting sunlight on the pathways.

The crimson Yanma landed on the young man’s back and settled in as the two humans shook hands. “Stop by when I’m back up and running, and we’ll see about thanking you proper,” he said with a smile before stepping inside his shop. Denzil clicked his tongue loudly before walking off to the job board for the fourth time that day. In response to this sound a mound of mud raised its head from an especially deep puddle and gave a wide yawn. It rose up onto four legs and gave a stretch before following the human on four mud-caked hooves. Jacob was a contented Mudbray this day, and his Handler had no intention of stopping his fun. Sky water had blessed the ground with fresh, wonderful mud, and he took the chance to divert to these puddles as he trotted along with an occasional splash when he chose to hop directly into one.

A girl and her pokemon walked slowly along the road leading into Dedrius. The days prior had been rainy and last night was a particularly stormy evening. It was a wet and muddy trek into town, much to the delight of the pink pokemon that was rolling from puddle to puddle. A large smile was spread across his wide mouth and he was over joyed about the wet weather. Feelings of joy and excitement flooded the red haired girl's mind, but they weren't her own.

Quinn felt quite neutral about rain, and instead the emotions she was feeling belonged to her pokemon who was projecting them to her, albeit unintentionally. The pair had yet to get a handle on their psychic connection, which meant that anytime Slug felt strong emotions, Quinn was all too aware of them. But, in all honesty, Quinn thought it was purely fascinating and appreciated every second of it.

Slug and Quinn arrived in Dedrius to find that the town had been roughed up by the weather. Shingles were torn from roofs, signs were knocked over and people were scurrying around attempting to repair damage. The girl, having had no real plans for her day, saw this and decided that she should try to help out. She turned toward the direction of the town square and headed toward the job board.

As the girl and her pink pokemon approached the job board, she noticed a figure also moving toward the sign. She noted that there was a yanma on the person's back, and smiled. Quinn had always thought that yanma were quite cute. Perhaps she would have on of her own someday. "Is your yanma friendly?" Quinn asked inquisitively as she approached the figure and the board. She wanted to pet it or give a treat so badly that she couldn't help but ask.

Denzil's mind was elsewhere when he heard a woman’s voice from up ahead. He stopped when he saw her near the job board situated in the town square, and promptly ended up in the splash zone of Jacob’s latest romp. He grunted slightly when he felt the cold water hit the back of his neck and coat his pants in fresh mud. Ruby buzzed in irritation and clambered onto Denzil’s head to shake the water from her wings. They gave off a steady buzz and flicked water droplets into the air, very briefly creating a tiny rainbow where the sun lanced through them. With her wings dry a moment later, she gave the Mudbray a berating buzz before turning and catching sight of the new human. Jacob had the decently to paw at the ground in apology though he did keep glancing at a large puddle nearby on the far side of the path.

Denzil wiped off his pants the best he could, then stood with a defeated sigh and scrutinized the stranger. She seemed to be asking out of simple curiosity. He had to fight back a smile when he noticed the Slowpoke enjoying the ‘sky water’ with no less enthusiasm than his own mud-dweller. The pink creature strongly reminded him of Peter, a Slowpoke back home known for delivering baked goods for his Handler, and the memory gave him a reassuring feeling. Ruby for her part tilted her head slightly in curiosity. Denzil reached up and gently pat the tiny horns on her head. “She can be. Is your friend there, friendly?”. He asked, gesturing to the grinning Slowpoke.

Jacob by this point had walked up to his Handler’s side looked up at the chatting humans. He must’ve found their conversation less than thrilling because he then moved onto snuffling the pink creature sharing the muddy puddles. The mudbray nuzzled his fellow puddle jumper and lowered himself into one such circle of water until his legs were hidden by the murk. During this exchange Denzil had taken the time to give the job board a quick scan out of the corner of his eye, and spotted one near the bottom that caught his interest. It seemed simple enough from the large text, apparently some Bug Pokemon had been scared into someone’s home when the storm hit and the person wanted them removed.

Quinn had to resist the urge to giggle when she witnessed the stranger's mudbray splash him with mud. She didn't want to appear rude, but it was a tad bit funny to watch. Instead she smiled warmly and tried to give off a sense of politeness. She watched as the yanma crawled onto it's owner's head and flicked off the water from it's wings. Quinn was impressed by the rainbow that the pokemon managed to create for a split second and it was almost dazzling to see all of the colors flicker through the air so suddenly. It took a moment for her to refocus her attention on the stranger, but she was able to catch what he had said in response to her question.

The girl turned her eyes toward her pokemon and replied "Yeah, he's quite fiendly." The pink pokemon was very pleased to be getting a puddle friend, and smiled widely when the mudbray approached. Slug rolled through the muck and came to rest beside the mud horse. He then sniffed the horse before proceeding to lick it directly on the nose. He always wanted to lick things, Slug was a very mouthy slowpoke. "Sloooo-" he beamed happily.

Quinn returned her gaze to the stranger and noticed him eyeing the job board. "Are you here to help out too?" she questioned before looking toward the board herself. She skimmed quickly over the board and found her gaze drawn toward a particular note in the lower corner. The large words, mentioning an infestation of bug pokemon, made it easy for her to read swiftly.

"Maybe we could work together." Quinn suggested, though she wasn't really sure why she was being so forward. Perhaps it was the air of calm that she was getting from the stranger and his pokemon. "Four hands are better than two, ya know." she chimed awkwardly as she turned her eyes back to the stranger.

"I'm Quinn, and this here is Slug." she gestured toward the slowpoke that was wriggling in the mud like a seel. She figured she should just get introductions out of the way, they were always so tedious so why not get them over with?

Jacob seemed to be enjoying the attention gave the Slowpoke a few gentle, for the Ground-Type, nudges with his snout. He drew back slightly when his nose was licked, and from the sounds he was making Denzil thought that maybe the Mudbray had gotten spooked. His concerns were eased a moment later when he was forced to raise a hand to block a fresh spray of water, when Jacob let loose a loud sneeze. He snuffled a few times and went back to playing in the mud with his new friend. The sneeze seemed to have inspired him as he kept dipping his nose just beneath the murky water. A moment after each time, a gout of bubbles would spring up to the surface before he would take a breath and repeat the game.

Denzil watched the exchange with a warmth in his chest, it was good to see his friend so happy. The desert left little chances for playing in mud puddles and he had no intention of cutting it short for the otherwise stoic Mudbray. He considered the woman’s suggestion and while wary, saw the merit in it. If they were already helping out the village, then they could do more good together to deal with bigger jobs than simply sweeping paths or hammering down wooden signposts. He stepped forward and held out his hand in greeting. “Denzil. My partners are Ruby, and Jacob. Nice to meet you both.” He gestured to the Yanma and Mudbray in turn as he spoke, and Jacob even gave an affirmative mass of blown bubbles. After any introductions were completed, he would pull the job posting from the board to show that it had been taken up by someone. “This isn’t that far from here.” he said after reading the paper. He started walking to the East, where most of the shops gave way to modest homes and a well-maintained park. Jacob gave a grunt and a look of longing to the puddles but followed close behind after giving Slug a nudge.

The notice led them to a two-story building bearing a wooden sign above its door, suspended by a metal chain. The sign had a painted depiction of a Squirtle tucked into its shell with a trail of ‘Z’s leading from where its head rested. The Sleepy Squirtle Inn had held up well against the storm. Aside from a few shingles torn from the roof and a rather generous deposit of branches and debris dumped against one side, there was only a single broken window. They were met inside by a portly man with a belly that almost reached further than his arms did. “No rooms, yet. Going to have to wait ‘til we can get a matter sorted out. Go on, scoot!” The man spoke not so much in a rude tone, but more of someone who had been worn down by worries. Denzil had seen those eyes on people before and bit his tongue, instead holding out the job posting from the board. The man snatched it up and looked at it, recognition registering after a moment. The change was almost immediate as he visibly deflated, relief replacing the frenzied expression on his face.

He pulled over a wooden stool and sat down with a groan, whether from him or the stool wasn’t clear. “Sorry about that.” he said with a sheepish look after he composed himself. “With this storm and the ‘issue’ downstairs, I’ve had to turn away customers all day. Paying customers! Please tell me you can fix this?” Denzil looked to Quinn before replying. “What exactly is the ‘issue’?” The man gave a huff and jerked his head towards a wooden door in the far corner, currently blocked off with a chair braced against the handle. “Storm must have scared something down into the cellar. Went down to get more oil for the lamps and couldn’t get past the stairs!” He paused a moment to calm his breathing. “There’s bug silk blocking the way and just plastered all over down there. If you can clear ‘em out, I can at least stock you both with some food for the road. You’re Handlers, right?

Slug watched his new mudbray friend dip it's snout below the water and he tilted his head. He was confused for a second until he saw the bubbles gurgling up to the surface. Slug grinned happily and flopped over onto his side splashing some water in Quinn's direction. A few muddy droplets landed on the girl's trousers, but she didn't really mind. She was used to getting dirt and grime all over her while she worked at the lumber mill and this was nothing compared to that. Slug then rolled onto his belly, shoved his nose in the water and started blowing bubbles too in an attempt to join in on the mudbray's game. Anytime the little horse would blow bubbles, Slug's own bubbles would soon follow. Quinn smiled, pleased to see her pokemon enjoying himself. Anytime there was water available Quinn would do her best to let Slug spend some time in it, and this was one of those lucky days.

Quinn was presented a hand to shake so she took it in her own firm grip and nodded politely. "Yes, it's nice to meet you too, Denzil." Then introductions were over as swiftly as they had begun. Denzil grabbed one of the fliers from the board, in fact it was the exact one that Quinn had had her eye on. Denzil mentioned how it was not far from here, and Quinn nodded. "Yes, I've been there before actually, but only once." When Denzil started on his way, Quinn looked back to make sure her own pokemon was following. She watched as the mudbray nudged Slug and forced him to move in the right direction. There would be no tearing him away from the water today, and instead it seemed he was going to come willingly. He trudged along the road behind the group as they all made their way to the location presented on the flier, The Sleepy Squirtle Inn.

The pair was greeted by a less than cheerful man that told them to move along. Quinn shook her head "We're not here for a room." she said as Denzil handed the innkeeper the notice. She then listened as the man described the situation at hand. 'A stray pokemon, eh? Nothing too difficult to handle, hopefully.' Thought Quinn. "Yes, we're handlers." Quinn replied to the man's question. "Some food would be wonderful, and I'm sure we can get this pokemon out of your cellar." She turned to Denzil and asked "Right?" After an response was given, Quinn would turn back to the innkeeper and ask "Can you show us where?"

"Oh, of course," The man grunted as he stood up from his stool and gestured for the pair of humans to follow "It's just down there." He led Quinn and Denzil down a small hallway to a door and pointed at it. "Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to be back up at the front watching for customers while you two get this fixed. Not really a fan of bug pokemon..." And with that the innkeeper meandered back to the entryway.

"Alright, lets see what we got here." chimed Quinn, eager to see what all the fuss was about. She grabbed the door handle and pulled, but it was stuck. She made her stance a little wider, grabbed the handle, and pulled back firmly until the door started to open. A tearing sound could be heard as the door ripped open to reveal a silk covered doorway. Quinn reached out to touch the sticky web and was met with a firm feeling wall of silk. It had to be at least an inch thick in some spots. Whatever had made this really wanted to keep this door closed. Quinn rummaged around in her satchel and pulled out her knife. It was a nice blade, one that she had made herself, with a jeweled inlay on the pommel that would be clearly visible to the figure standing next to her.

Quinn took the knife and sliced into the silk on the doorway, cutting open a hole from top to bottom that she could fit through. "Let's see what's in there, eh?" She chimed with a hint of excitement. She wanted to find out what was making all of this silk, and didn't hesitate to step inside the silk hole. Once inside, and down the sticky silk covered stairs, the pair would be greeted with a room covered with various densities of webbing. It was almost unrecognizable as a cellar and looked more like the den of a creature at this point.
