Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Welcome to Harper! Remember to keep an egg count in each post and to let us know in the Update Requests thread once you've replied here. Have fun!

The aide chuckled as Elise tried to hug him, instead stepping to the side, out of her embrace, and placing a hand on her arm in an alternative gesture of comfort. He watched her for a moment patiently before growing uncomfortable and continuing on with what he was instructed to say. The aide collected a travelling bag from one of the desks in the room and handed it to the young woman, who would find that it was quite heavy, having been packed with all the essentials a beginner guardian would need. ”Here you are, Guardian Elise. Courtesy of the Councilman, these are some provisions to help you get started. There is a pokemon egg and a pokemon in there for you as well, so don’t forget to take care of them well.”

Stepping away for a few moments, the aide gave Elise some time to go through the things she had been given or to collect herself before beginning her first mission. Her display of emotion moments ago led him to remain behind the desk, where he would be safe in the chance that she might try to hug him again.

A sharp knock at the door caused them both to look up. The aide rushed to the door, explaining as he went: ”Ah, this must be William. He is one of the Councilman’s most experienced guardians, and he will be your mentor on your first mission. Any questions you have about the guardians or what is expected of you, it’s him you’ll want to ask-” Halting his explanation rather abruptly, the aide opened the door, revealing a tall, armoured man. ”Yes, hello William. I was just telling Elise about you.” Several inches shorter than the middle-aged man, the aide politely smiled up at him.

William didn’t seem very interested in the aide, brushing him off and approaching Elise instead, looking her over as a farmer would a new miltank or tauros. Taking the chance to get a good look at him as well, the young guardian could see that his armour had been shined recently, the beautifully carved metal plates glinting in the sunlight. A long sword hung at his belt beside six ultra balls, just as finely crafted as his armour, indicating that his service with the Guard had been not only long, but profitable as well. His brown hair was tied into a tight ponytail and tucked into the back of his armour to keep it out of the way, and his wary honey-coloured eyes told of the dangers he had seen.

Finishing his examination, the senior guard’s expression softened and he flashed a small smile, introducing himself with all the politeness expected of a man of his rank. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you, Elise. I have heard good things about your from your mentor, Adulwulf, and his judgement tends to be trustworthy. To have been trained by as great a man as he, I expect you will do well here. As I’m sure you know by now, my name is William Fielding, senior guardian to the Councilman.” Giving a rather extravagant bow that ended up being quite limited due to the bulk of his armour, William smiled down at Elise.

”The aide has sorted you out with your things, I see? Good. Now, unless there is anything you need to do in town, we must set out immediately. Our mission is quite a time-sensitive matter.” William explained, pushing a rogue strand of hair behind his ear. After waiting for Elise to gather her things (and put on her amour if she hadn’t already), the tall man would waste no time in leading the new recruit back out of the Councilman’s estate and through the streets of Dedrius, headed toward the city gates. ”Yes, Adulwulf suggested to me that we assign you to this mission – normally someone of your standing would be capturing starter pokemon or patrolling the streets. He thought it would appeal to your sense of justice, or some such business.” William shrugged, clearly unaware of the circumstances in which Elise and her mentor parted.

Continuing as they walked, William explained: ”Yes, we have been assigned with the task of checking up on a caravan of refugees from a small town in the mountains. Having been attacked by a clan of beartic, they have come south for refuge here in the city. However, we expected them nearly a week ago, and the Councilman has ordered that we find out what happened to them. There are women and children with the caravan, so he is anxious that they may have been set upon by bandits or wild pokemon.” He paused at the unfortunate thought, eyes straying off into the distance, before returning to what he was saying. ”We’ll need to head north as far as the main road goes – which isn’t far – and then head off along the smaller, overgrown roads they would have been travelling down.”

”We might find them before nightfall if we’re lucky, but more likely, we’ll be out there for several days. I have enough food and water to last us both as long as we need, but if there is anything you want to purchase before we leave, this is your last chance.” William announced, pausing in front of the General Store.

[Egg Post 1]

Her excitement slowly subduing after the initial rush of joy she had experienced at being accepted into the guard the girl smiled brightly as she was given the bag that contained the essentials for her journey. While she already had put on her armor for the oath ceremony earlier the bag was still heavy enough due to the remaining materials that lingered within it. What could have possibly been so heavy? Peeking inside the bag Elise noticed a small sphere, likely containing the Pokémon she was given as a partner for her rise into guardianship. Then there were also several other items but most curious was the egg that was carefully wrapped in a small blanket. Was she… supposed to raise it at some point? However, before she even had the opportunity to ask the aide about the nature of this gift the sudden knock on the door made Elise’s gaze wander toward the entrance, curious if there had been another person who was going to undertake the ceremony. Her thoughts were clearly confirmed to be wrong, because the Aide started to explain she was going to be left in the care of a veteran guardian for her first assignment.

The arrival of William had caused Elise’s eyes to instantly focus onto the man, the earlier playfulness in her demeanor slowly fading away as the girl realized this was the real deal. That man was a guardian, and judging from the look in his eyes also one who had seen the dangerous events that could be associated with it. However, the man carried himself with a sense of confidence what was something she could admire. A short blink of surprise came from Elise as she was told that the man had seemingly known her mentor, a brief smile appearing on her lips.

That old bastard, first he leaves me without a word of warning and even when he’s away he’s still taking care of me

Stepping forward to William the fact Elise was clad in only a leather suit of armor would have likely made her a lot more mobile than the iron-clad guardian, a hand extending toward him while she grinned boyishly at him.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you William, and I’ll make certain to live up to the expectations my mentor has set before me.”

In the end it was logical that she was going to try her best to become a great guardian. Her mentor had spent years training her, a homeless child who had nothing to give in return so perhaps it was for that reason she was so dedicated to the idea of becoming a guardian just like he had been. It didn’t take long for them to have left the Councilman’s estate, wandering along the streets of Dedrius while Elise continued to listen to William’s explanation. So she was given this mission on recommendation of her own mentor? It had been a wise decision, not only had she learned such a basic level of experience that one would gain from capturing weak Pokémon or patrolling the streets but on top of that she had also been the type who wanted to prove herself, so menial tasks like patrolling the streets of a peaceful village would have only made her restless. Still the words that he added at the end surprised her a little.

It was no secret that Elise was a just person who couldn’t handle the sight of evil deeds being committed, especially on those who couldn’t defend themselves. Her mentor often called her jokingly a ‘Guardian of the Weak’ but till now she never truly realized how truthful that joke had been.

“Of course! If there are children and women among the caravan there is even more reason for us to head over there as soon as possible. We can’t allow such innocent people to be harmed either by the hunger of wild Pokémon or the greed of vile humans.”

A soft sigh escaped her lips alongside a determined gaze at William, clearly saying on terms of look alone that she was prepared to follow him to bring this caravan to safety. When they came to a halt in front of the general store Elise had finally armed herself with her bow, carefully attaching it to her back next to the quiver that was filled with her arrows.

“I think I shall take your offer and buy some supplies in the general store. I would like to stock on a few more arrows and a pair of daggers. While I have a decent experience on terms of archery my mentor has often taught me the importance of being able to defend myself if the enemy gets up close~ Of course I might have a Pokémon to help me but it would be foolish to leave anything to chance.”

It had been a thought that had been drifting in her mind ever since she heard they were going to be escorting a caravan to safety. Since wild Pokémon and bandits were two different sorts of threats Elise felt it was necessary for her to be armed decently enough for such an encounter.

“But I’ll make sure to hurry in my purchase, every moment we lose in the city is a moment that those innocent people are stuck in such a dangerous situation.”

She had to hurry, not only for her own sake but for the survival of those innocent people. Without an escort it was unlikely they would make it to the village so it was up to her and William to save the day!

I guess your decision to help me get assigned to this mission earned you some good points Adulwulf, consider my abandonment forgiven.

With those words drifting through her mind Elise smiled briefly as she prepared to head into the general store, hoping they had the necessary supplies available for her trip. She had only made a brief knock onto the door, after William’s approval for her choice to go shopping before she entered the store.

Though he made no comment, William appeared to be pleased by Elise’s determination and eagerness. Being an apprentice of Adulwulf, the guardian had expected as much from her, and he looked forward to seeing how well she would do on the rest of their mission; battle wasn’t an easy thing, and he saw more than one new recruit back out, fearing for their lives. It was too early to tell for sure, but he had high hopes for the young woman.

William nodded in approval at Elise’s decision to purchase some items from the General Store before leaving. ”Good thinking. One can never be over prepared when dealing with these sort of missions. In fact, I’d better purchase a few things, too.” The senior guardian chuckled at Elise when she knocked on the door, instead holding it open for her with an amused smile still on his lips. ”No need to knock, dear Elise. Go on ahead.” He said, stepping into the shop after her and letting the door fall closed behind them.

The General store was quite a large building, though once inside, it was crowded with shelves of items, racks of swords and armour, and locked cabinets where the more valuable merchandise was kept. Almost immediately once they entered the door, there was the shopkeeper’s counter, where a white-haired old man was standing, working out a deal with a young man for a pair of bronze-coloured gauntlets. He spared the two guardians a glance, waving briefly, before returning to his dealings. While William went to collect the items he wished to purchase, Elise was left to search the shelves for her own needs.

Before long, she was able to collect everything she was looking for and made her way over to the counter, where William had just finished sorting out his payment and was packing away his new items into his pack. ”Ah good, you’re ready. I’ll meet you outside.” William said, replacing his pack on his armoured back before heading outside.

The elderly shopkeeper gave Elise a small smile and beckoned her forward. ”Hello, hello! Will this be all for you, young miss?” He asked, pulling out a sales book and feather pen to record the transaction. Placing the pair of plain iron daggers and the quiver of arrows into a thin burlap bag, he placed it on the counter before the young guardian. ”That will be 250 gold, please.” He said, returning his gnarled hands to the counter.

If Elise wanted to try to haggle for a better price, she was free to do so, though it was possible that her price could be raised, too, if she was unsuccessful. Otherwise, the shopkeeper would gladly take her gold and she could head outside to reunite with William.

While the idea of bartering for a lower price did pop up in her mind Elise had to admit she was rather uncertain about the idea of doing it. Her mentor rarely haggled for a cheaper price, mostly because the few times she saw him try to do it he had failed miserably, not to mention it would look bad for her to try to haggle a merchant now that she was one of the good guys, a Guardian who was supposed to aid the people.

“I guess 250 gold pieces is a fine price for increasing my chances to protect the fair people of this land as a Guardian.”

Saying those words with a soft smile Elise secretly hoped the reason behind her purchase might had tempted the man to lower the price of the purchase, but then again she doubted it would be like that. This man had to earn his meals from the business his shop produced so to do people a favor like that would be quite difficult. After she handed over the 250 gold pieces Elise quietly attached the sheathed iron knifes onto her belt before placing the arrows she had received during her oath earlier into the quiver, ensuring she had enough ammunition for the trip.

Upon leaving the store the young woman looked around, trying to spot William while thinking about their mission. To save the caravan they had to move quickly, so it was certain that once they hit the road there would be no side-tracks or delay. No, it was obvious that this would be right down into business. Now she thought about it, she did have something to ask William. She was given a Pokémon, but had yet to formally interact with it, so perhaps she could ask him for some advice during the trip? In the end even if she had a Pokémon, to actually have it aid her in battle would require a bond to be shaped, and that wasn’t something done within seconds.

“William, let us depart. However, I would require your advice, but let us talk while we walk shall we?”

Waiting for the veteran guardian to lead her onwards Elise thought about how to express her thoughts. It was after a moment of consideration she finally started speaking again.

“I been wondering but… Despite the fact I’m given a Pokémon I can’t expect it to consider me an ally or a friend yet. Would it be possible for me to interact with him or her while we travel? The moment they delay us I’ll recall them back into the Pokéball. It’s mostly because I think the loyalty of a Pokémon must be earned, and that’s not something done within an instant. Only through a bond known as friendship can one expect a Pokémon to cooperate with us.”

It was a logical thought, and hopefully William would agree with her view. In the end if they were to encounter wild Pokémon or bandits they would need all the help they could get.

Elise finished up her dealings with the shopkeeper and went outside to meet up with her mentor. She had trouble finding the large man at first, but after a moment of glancing about the crowded area near the General Store, she located him a few buildings over, chatting to an elderly man whose head was shiny and bald except for a crescent of white hair. The building they stood in front of appeared to be the man’s house, and the large barn in the back echoed with the discordant cries of doduo and dodrio – his profession. As Elise approached, William was just finishing up a deal to rent two of the mounts for the duration of their mission, handing over a pouch of gold labelled with the symbol of the lyre.

William turned to Elise as she approached, surprisingly having heard her over the roar of the crowds, and offered the young woman a grin. ”Elise! There you are. I’m just renting us a couple of doduo to shorten the journey – have you ridden before? They’re a little different than a ponyta or a sawsbuck, but you ought to get the hang of it easily enough.” As William spoke, the elderly man disappeared into the barn, returning after a few moments with a doduo and a dodrio, to suit each Guardian’s size. ”Glenn’s birds are the best in Dedrius for travellin’ quickly, I find.” He explained, taking the dodrio’s reins from the old man.

Glenn handed the doduo’s reins to Elise with a gnarled, veiny hand and gave a gap-toothed smile. ”She answers ‘ta Bex but ya can call ‘er doduo, too. Girl ain’t picky.” His rheumy eyes lingered on her face for an uncomfortable moment before he turned to William and announced: ”Well, take good care o’ me birds, lad, ‘n bring ‘em back ‘s soon ‘s ye can.” The senior Guardian nodded his agreement and said his goodbyes, leading his dodrio in the direction of the city gates.

It was a short walk; with the noisy bird pokemon in tow, William and Elise had no trouble clearing a path for themselves. Chattering amongst themselves, the flying-types moved along easily, following even the gentlest nudge without a problem – it was clear that they were highly trained. Some people watched the Guardians go past with awe and interest, eager to see what sort of mission the valiant protectors of the city were heading off of this time. The men guarding the gate simply gave the pair a friendly wave as they passed by, wishing them good fortune on their task, and sharing the news that the castform had said that a storm was coming on the morrow. William frowned, and led Elise along.

Outside on the Route, the lush forests stretched out endlessly, broken by babbling brooks and occasionally streams large enough to be called rivers. Even only a few metres from the last of the houses, wild pokemon were abundant, their cries filling the forest’s silence. Farms lined the route outside the city, spaced quite far apart and varying in size from one that was scarcely more than a cabin with a garden, to one that was closer to a plantation, spanning several fields with a large main house and several other buildings on the property. There were people and pokemon out working in the fields, planting, harvesting, and caring for their livestock.

William turned to Elise, listening closely to her question, his face serious. Then, a smile broke out on his lips and he chuckled, answering, ”Yes, of course, dear Elise. If you had not suggested it soon, I would have. There’s no sense in heading into the wilderness with a companion you have not even met. Go ahead, open up its pokeball now!” He grinned, stepping back and gesturing that she use that space to release the creature. Even though he was nearly old enough to be her father, the excitement on his face allowed Elise to see how he might have looked in his prime.

After giving the young woman some time to meet her new companion, and showing her how to access the information about the munchlax on her pokecard, William would gladly answer any questions she might have about pokemon handling, or their mission, or something else entirely. Once that was done, however, it was time to begin their journey. Helping the young woman get onto her own mount, William ensured that she was comfortable and secure enough that she would not fall off before skilfully climbing into the saddle of his own. When she was ready, the guardians would set off down the Route, beginning their mission to save the refugees.

She had to admit the idea of riding on a Doduo was both curious and exciting. She had always imagined they would have likely gone on foot, mostly cause she wouldn’t be able to even afford a mount. It was obvious from the curious look in her eyes and the soft ‘oh’ she made when Glenn returned with the Doduo that Elise was rather excited about the idea. Shaking her head lightly at the man’s words Elise replied with a sheepish grin.

“I’ll make sure to remember her name. In the end if she’s going to work so hard to help us on our mission it’s the least I can do, right Bex?”

The looks of interest and awe that the people made their way as she and William moved along the streets caused a faint blush to appear on her cheeks. It was only natural, for someone who had lived in poverty for so long, the look of people finally giving her such gazes, positive ones at that also filled her with courage and gratitude for the time her mentor had taken to raise her into a Guardian. When the news was given to them that the Castform had predicted a storm to head their way Elise could see the frown William made, and rightly so. If a storm was to approach that meant the refugees were going to have increasing difficulties moving at a safe pace, not to mention that wild Pokémon or bandits could take advantage of the storm.

When they traversed the road and William revealed he was going to even suggest for her to meet her Pokémon a gentle chuckle escaped her lips as she nodded in agreement, unhooking the Pokéball that she had attached to her belt and with a light toss of the sphere made it open in a burst of light. It took a few moments before the small figure of the Munchlax materialized, looking around in awe at his surroundings while Elise knelt down before the little creature.

“Yo~”

The Munchlax briefly looked at her, seemingly acknowledging her existence before the sight of all the delicious vegetables on the farm were seen by him, making him nearly run off toward them if it wasn’t for Elise’s swift grasp of his body to pull him back.

“No running off now, we’re in a bit of a hurry today Munchlax.”

The Munchlax pouted in annoyance, gesturing toward the vegetables before patting his belly, clearly hinting he wanted to eat.

“You’re hungry? Well, I guess I can give you something to munch on…”

Pulling out a Cheri Berry from her bag Elise could only watch in horror as the Munchlax eagerly grasped it with his hands and letting out a sound of gratitude devoured the whole berry in one go… This creature was a pure glutton…

“T-That berry was meant to last you for the whole trip…”

Dropping her shoulders in defeat the Munchlax’s stomach growled again, making the little Pokémon rub his belly and extend a hand, as if expecting the next meal already.

“No, that won’t work Munchlax--- Actually let’s call you Beelzebub, cause you’re such a glutton. Anyway, Beel if you want food you’ll have to work for it.”

Food… work for it… So if he listened to her instructions she would feed him? That actually didn’t sound that bad, better than being forced to get his own food. Tilting his head to the side the Munchlax tried to voice his curiosity through a few sounds.

“Well right now we’re on our way to help a group of people who are in trouble. If you help me and William with protecting everyone I’ll give you a nice meal when we return, and you get a free berry during the trip if you behave.”

Bribery… this was pure bribery… To think the only way for her to cooperate with Beelzebub was to do it like this… He was like a devil! To form a contract with meals as the price in exchange for his service… Sighing playfully she scooped the Munchlax in her arms and looked at William.

“I… hope Guardians get paid decently, else Beel is going to put me right back into poverty…”

Smiling weakly she recalled the Munchlax into his Pokéball before climbing onto Bex, thanking William for his help while gently petting Bex.

“Let’s go then I guess, on to save the refugees.”

William couldn’t help but crack a smile at the little munchlax’s antics, chuckling as he watched Elise meet her pokemon partner. The two of them were clearly quite different, the childish little glutton and the disciplined Guardian, but he had a feeling that they would learn to get along. If she was disappointed by the creature that would be helping her on her journey, Elise didn’t show it, and William was silently pleased about this; far too many novice Guardians tended to be disrespectful and childish, but this young woman was proving to be a pleasant surprise.

He laughed as she returned the newly named Beelzebub, ”Aye, he does have quite an appetite. Good thing it’ll be a while before he evolves – a snorlax is a dozen times as hungry. But no need to worry on that front, dear Elise. The kitchen in the barracks is always open to you and your pokemon, and they’ve got more than enough food to satisfy Beelzebub.” William explained, a smile in his voice. Soon, however, his attention returned to the matter at hand: their mission. ”Well, we’d best be off. You’ll have plenty of time to get to know Beel when we stop to rest, maybe even try a practice battle with one of the wild pokemon if you’d like.”

And then he snapped his reins and the dodrio was off, accelerating quickly to a surprisingly fast speed, each of its three heads focused on the road ahead. Elise’s doduo followed slowly, one head turning to look at her questioningly until she too urged it to run with a tug of the reins, and then it was off, moving nearly as fast as the dodrio had. Before the bird found a consistent speed, Elise was rocked back and forth a little until she became accustomed to the sensation of travelling on the two-legged pokemon - it certainly was different from riding a ponyta or blitzle. It wan't too much of a challnge, however, and a few moments they caught up to William, stepping into pace so that they were riding alongside his dodrio. Her hair whipping in the wind, Elise watched the scenery speed by.

The sun was high in the sky by the time William signalled with a gesture of the hand that it was time for them to take a break. Nudging his dodrio with a boot, the bird gradually slowed and the senior Guardian steered it over to the side of the road. Bex followed the dodrio’s example even if Elise gave her no instruction, panting heavily from the exertion of running for as long as they had. William leapt of his dodrio, taking a moment to stretch his legs before offering to help the young woman off her own mount. They moved to a small clearing in the trees just off the side of the Route and fastened the mount pokemon to a nearby tree so that they could rest.

”Here, Elise. I’ve got fruit, bread, and a little salted meat for our lunch. Nothing fancy, I’m afraid, but this is what you’ll need to get used to while travelling - unless you're lucky enough to find an inn, you'll have to eat what you can carry with you. I’ve got plenty, so grab some for Beel, too – I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.” He grinned, opening up his pack to reveal several small loaves of bread, a selection of apples and berries, and a few pieces of dried meat. Handing Elise her share (and Beelzebub’s), he took the rest and moved to sit in the shade of a tree. ”If you’d like to do some exploring or find a pokemon to battle with, feel free… just don’t make me have to come looking for you when it’s time to head off again.” He winked, laughing, before digging into his lunch.

Glancing around their rest spot, Elise could see that there didn’t appear to be many other people around; only the occasional person or cart passed by down the Route. Even so, the area certainly was not empty: pidgey called from the trees, the barks of poochyena could be heard from within the woods, and there was a fresh set of footprints that looked like they had come from a skiddo. Upon closer inspection, she could also see a brave sewaddle resting in the low branches of one of the nearby trees and a glameow that was stalking an unsuspecting starly in the adjacent field. Pokemon were much more abundant here than they had been closer to the city, and many of them moved about confidently, not glancing around in fear like some of those that lived in the city tended to.

However, if interacting with a wild pokemon was not something Elise wanted to do at the moment, William would be happy to chat with her over their meal or answer any questions she might have. He was a friendly fellow, and wouldn't turn down a conversation or the chance to dispense some wisdom to the young Guardian.

So long as she returned to the clearing in time, Elise had some time to spend as she pleased. With several options open to her, what would she do?

Elise gains .7 exp for the last post!

- 1 Cheri Berry

[Just a note for future reference: Elise wouldn’t realistically be able to lift Beel – even as young as he is, he weighs over 200 lbs, amazingly enough.
And, if you'd like to have Hope introduced here, feel free to have Elise find his pokeball on the ground.(:]

A weak laugh came from the young Guardian when she learned that Beelzebub’s appetite would only increase even more when he evolved. Still the knowledge the barracks would be open for her and her Pokémon made the girl’s lips curve up into a brighter smile.

“Thanks Arceus, I was afraid I was going to have to deal with his appetite on my own.”

The sight of the changing scenery was quite pleasant to behold, the fresh wind breeze that rustled through her hair giving a refreshing feeling. When finally William signaled for them to stop Elise gave the order to Bex to halt, whispering a word of gratitude to William for helping her get off the bird Pokémon. She clearly still had a few issues getting used to riding the Pokémon, but at least she was slowly getting the hang of things. Following William into the clearing Elise nodded her head lightly before she replied at his explanation about the meal.

“Ah luxury isn’t that much of a concern to me William. During my childhood I was lucky if I was able to eat some bread and water, anything more was usually considered a feast. So thank you for giving me and my Pokémon a feast.”

Bashfully scratching her cheek the girl smiled softly as William handed her share, and while she sat down nearby the man, opening her bag the sight of small shaking sphere amidst the Pokéballs she was given made her eyebrows furrow into a small frown.

“Odd, there’s a Pokéball with a Pokémon inside…”

Scooping up the Pokéball the sight of a letter fallen onto her lap, making the girl open it and read it out loud.

Dear Elise, when you’re reading this you’re likely already on the road for your first mission. It’s for reason I send you a little ‘support’. Heh, you’re likely thinking ‘Awesome an Arcanine of my own!’ Or a ‘Nidoking to defeat all evil within the world!’ Actually I think a Togepi will fit you more. You need something adorable to keep your spirits high. Besides I know you love adorable things.

Anyway, don’t cause William too much troubles okay, else I’d have to buy him another beer next time I’m in Dedrius…

Signed: Adulwulf Von Eisenberg

Sighing playfully Elise folded up the letter and stashed it back into the bag before she placed it onto the grass, unhooking the remaining Pokéball and releasing both her Pokémon out of their confines. The first to emerge was the little Togepi, who looked at his surroundings with wide eyes, like a child seeing the world for the first time ever, while the Munchlax that appeared behind him instantly eyed the food with the eyes of a predator, rushing toward it. Fortunately Elise had quickly lifted the food upwards to avoid the rushing Munchlax as she declared sternly.

“We’ll be sharing between us 3 Beel.”

The Munchlax sighed softly, walking over toward the young woman before he flopped down onto his rear, watching Elise carefully divide the food, albeit it was noticeable that her own portion was smaller, likely explaining why both her Munchlax and Togepi’s rations were larger.

“Enjoy you two~”

The Munchlax didn’t need to be told it twice, quickly munching onto the bread, fruit and salted meat all at the same time. However, the Togepi had yet to touch his food, causing Elise to notice he was staring rather intensely at her.

“What’s the matter, you’re not hungry?”

The Togepi shook his head lightly, pointing at her with one of his tiny arms.

“Ah, me? I’m Elise, your new owner. Albeit I prefer if you’d consider me your friend.”

The Togepi let out a soft cry of joy, jumping into her arms, seemingly quite pleased at something she said. This made the young guardian chuckle softly before she started to feed her Togepi, sometimes taking some of her own portion to eat herself. This peaceful scene continued for a little longer before each of them finished their share of the meal and rising from her seat, holding the Togepi in her arms Elise turned toward William.

“I think I’ll take a short walk, I’ll be nearby so we should be able to depart soon enough.”

Smiling softly at the man she turned toward her Munchlax who was happily rubbing his belly.

“Say Beel, you want more?”

The Munchlax’s eyes sparkled with excitement as he saw some fruit in the girl’s hand, making him nod his head firmly.

“Join me for a walk and you’ll earn it.”

The Munchlax raised one of his arms in excitement, causing the Togepi to make the pumping gesture in response as the three of them started walking. She had spotted some Pidgey earlier, and was actually kind of interested to see what they were doing. Not to mention she had the idea of practicing some battling with her Pokémon, so maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a little bit of training in before they continued their journey. In the end there would be no time for practice when she was on her mission. In the end the refugees their lives might depend on her and William so they couldn’t permit serious mistakes from happening, and that meant they would have to train!

Egg Post 4

After hearing Elise’s response, William’s expression softened and he became serious, briefly placing a comforting – if slightly awkward – hand on her shoulder. ”I am sorry to hear that you’ve been through such hardships, Elise. Things will be better in the Guard; we take care of our own, and you won’t be wanting for anything again, I can assure you of that.” He gave a small, encouraging smile as he chose his own lunch from the small selection he had laid out, releasing a magmar to join him. The fire-type dug into the food immediately, roasting it with his fiery breath before gobbling it down, not even bothering to greet Elise or even glance in her direction. William laughed, ”I suppose magmar’s got the right idea; we’d better hurry up so we don’t waste too much daylight.”

As he ate, William watched with interest as Elise discovered her second pokemon, listening to the letter from Adulwulf as she read it aloud. He may not have known the young woman’s mentor as well as she did, but they had been acquainted well enough for him to chuckle quietly to himself at the last words of the letter. Yes, this was something he would do, making sure Elise would be well prepared for her first journey by sending her off with a second pokemon and some words of advice. Watching her interact with her two companions, already solving conflicts among them, William felt that she would do just fine, with or without her mentor's assistance.

When Elise announced that she was going for a walk, her mentor nodded. ”Alright, Elise. I’ll be here doing some training with magmar, the lazy old fellow. There's a thing or two I'd like to teach him before we head off. Don’t be gone too long, now.” The spitfire pokemon was now lazing in the sun after finishing his meal, the frost on the chilly ground all around him having melted from the heat exuded from the fire-type’s body. He glanced over at Elise and her pokemon now, blowing black smoke from his nose and murmuring a ”Ma-ar!” in greeting. Though he appeared quite disinterested and lazy currently, it was clear that this magmar was quite a powerful pokemon - his show of burning his food to a crisp before eating it was enough to prove that. Luckily, he was on her side, even if he had really warmed to her yet.

Moving away from the small clearing, Elise headed out onto the grassy field that made up much of the either side of the path in this area of the Route. Speckled with bushes, stones, and the occasional patch of trees, the area was quite beautiful despite being yellowed by the cold temperatures of the spring. Nearby, a small stream babbled from beneath a thin sheet of ice where a zangoose was fishing for some of the aquatic pokemon that swam about in the water, the normal-type pausing to briefly study Elise before returning to its task. And that seemed to be the attitude of many of the wild pokemon here, ignoring the handler so long as she gave them their peace in return. There was one, however, that seemed more interested in a battle than the others.

Hopping to stand defiantly in front of the handler as she walked past a tree whose branches were crowded with chattering bird pokemon, the pidgey ruffled its feathers and squawked loudly at Elise, challenging the Guardian to a battle and giving little option of refusal. The little bird seemed quite confident in itself, unafraid to challenge the human even though she had two pokemon on her side that were nearly the same level as the flying-type herself. Scratching at the frozen ground with one foot, the bird managed to gather up some dirt, flapping her wings to send it flying straight for Elise’s team, getting in their eyes and blinding them for a moment. While Elise herself might have been able to block the move with her sleeve or her shield, Beel and Hope were not so lucky, caught off guard by the flying-type’s sudden aggression.

The pidgey, on the other hand, seemed quite proud of her work and cawed loudly, hopping about and taunting her chosen ‘enemy’ pokemon to accept her invitation to battle. In the nearby trees, the other pidgey watched silently or went about their business, uninterested in helping their sister in her chosen battle. The flying-type seemed quite intent, however, and she would not let them go without a fight.

The sight of the Magmar was quite an impressive feat to behold. Even with the seemingly lazy attitude of the fire-type Elise couldn’t help but notice that there was something ‘different’ about him compared to her Pokémon. The way he could easily roast the food hinted at the sheer intensity of the flames, and his presence alone radiated strength. This was clearly the power of a trained Pokémon. With a light wave of her hand Elise wandered off, the Togepi held in her arms while the Munchlax chased after her, seemingly rather excited by the promise of more food should he listen to her. For Elise the idea of walking in the wilderness in the company of a pair of Pokémon she could proudly call her own called forth a rather invigorating feeling within her, the type of sensation that told her she was going to be able to handle any challenge destiny might end up throwing her way. Curiously enough it seemed destiny already had a little trial in store for her. Every story that became a legend started in a humble manner, in the end nobody could best a Charizard in the first chapter of their tale, and fortunately she didn’t have to try that either. The sound of a sudden squeak of a bird Pokémon caused the young guardian to raise her gaze, the sight of the Pidgey intriguing her but what followed afterwards was rather… unexpected. The bird swooped down from the tree, the beating of her wings whipping up some of the dirt on the ground and sending it flying into her direction.

“What in Arceus’s name!”

Quickly shielding herself with the sleeve of her armor she had been just in time to protect herself, but her Pokémon were less fortunate. Hope the Togepi found herself getting hit with some of the stream, the sand making his eyes sting and letting out a soft cry the little creature tried his best to wipe away the sand from his eyes. Beelzebub had it even worse, he was closer to the starting point of the stream and got hit by its full force, the grains of sand washing over him like a small tsunami and staggering backwards the Munchlax flailed in the stream till it finally subdued.

Several angry screeches came from the Munchlax who was spitting on the ground around him and for a moment Elise had to do her best to suppress the urge to laugh. You see, the Munchlax had briefly considered how tasty a Munchlax might be for a lunch dessert when suddenly the sand hit him. Not only did this cause him to be blinded by the attack, the sand whipped into his eyes but some of the grains found their way into his mouth, and if there was one thing he could say then it was the fact that the sand was tasting plain terrible!

“What’s the meaning of this Pidgey?!”

Her eyes narrowed a little the young lass seemed quite displeased with the sudden ambush, and judging from the bird’s squeaking and the rather aggressive motions it made it was clearly trying to challenge her to a battle. Obviously she wasn’t going to give in to such a taunt--- Okay it seemed Beelzebub had different plans. Turning toward Hope the Munchlax made several noises, followed by angry gestures at the bird before Hope nodded in agreement, squirming to get out of Elise’s grip and upon jumping down the two of them stood defiantly side by side, looking at her as if they were ready to go to war.

“You two want to fight?”

The Munchlax nodded firmly, making some rather obscene gestures at the Pidgey to express his anger at the bird while Hope merely nodded in affirmation. Neither of them were pleased with getting their eyes covered in sand, and thanks to Pidgey giving Beelzebub a first-hand taste of what a dish of dirt tasted like the Munchlax intended to return the favor by beating the bird into the ground, beak-first!

“I guess I’m not exactly pleased myself with their attitude…”

It was simply rude to attack someone without a warning, and especially a guardian! What happened to respect for authority?! Her body seemingly tensing for a bit the girl pulled the small chain-like device from her head and upon pressing her fingertip on it caused it to expand into the Pokécard. She had never fought before so she wasn’t even sure what type of skills her Pokémon had. Fortunately it seemed that she was a quick reader and that this device offered her a nice overview of what type of skills her Pokémon possessed. Perhaps to try to get a grip on her Pokémon their aptitude she could try this battling thing?

“Alright, let’s do this guys! Beelzebub you can start with a Double Team, Hope hit them with a Dazzling Gleam.”

However, it seemed that it wouldn’t be that easy to get her Pokémon to respond to her instructions, for the Munchlax had ignored her command and seemingly prepared himself for an offensive move. With his body coated in a purple glow it wouldn’t take long before he’d try to charge up at the Pidgey and hit it with a Zen Headbutt. Fortunately Hope had decided to listen to her instructions, his small hands reaching before him while she started to channel some form of energy that would soon manifest in the attack he had been told to do.

Of course with both Pokémon having been hit by the Sand Attack it was questionable if they could hit the Pidgey, their eyes while having wiped most of the sand out of them still had a slightly blurry vision so hitting the bird would be a challenge. Still right now neither of them seemed to care about the fact, for they desired revenge! What was that saying humans liked to use? An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth and a beating up to evil? Seems that could end up happening…

Summary:
Fight against Pidgey Begins:
Elise commanded Munchlax to use Double Team, but due to a lack of control over him the Munchlax decided to go onto the offensive (berserker!) and use Zen Headbutt.

Elise’s Togepi listened and tried using a Dazzling Gleam.

Not deterred by the pair of pokemon that stood side by side to defend their handler, Elise’s irritated reaction seemed to please the pidgey, and she gave a cry that sounded as much like a laugh as a bird could manage. The pidgey flapped her wings, ruffling her feathers as she stared down her opponents, showing not an ounce of nervousness as the large munchlax cursed and threatened. She was a confident bird, quite clearly, but without a type-advantage one way or the other, it was hard to say how the battle would result.

The banter between handler and pokemon was lost on the pidgey, who had never really come into contact with humans aside from spotting them from afar as they travelled by her home. She could pick out that yes, they would battle her, but not much beyond that. It was quite a surprise, then, when the air around Hope began to shine and sparkle brightly, and the pidgey flinched back. The light was far too bright to the pokemon’s eyes and its blinding rays seemed to even land on her brain, leaving the flying-type with an awful headache. To Elise and even Beel, it would seem quite pretty and not offensive at all, but to the wild pidgey, it was blinding.

It was as she was distracted by the Dazzling Gleam that Beelzebub ran for the pidgey, head first. With as little speed as could be expected from a pokemon of the munchlax’s bulk, it was only his sheer weight – combined with his zen-like concentration - that he was able to strike the pidgey with enough force to send her stumbling back, crying out in surprise and pain. Aching from the Zen Headbutt, pidgey only just managed to flutter out of the way as Beelzebub struggled to slow in time to save himself from tumbling over as his target flew from beneath him. His move had done its intended damage, though, and the flying-type could feel her body ache where the heavy pokemon had struck her.

While Beelzebub steadied himself and returned to his place alongside Hope, the pidgey circled above, keeping a foot or two out of reach of either pokemon. Her feathers were in disarray after Beelzebub’s headbutt and her head still rang from the Dazzling Gleam, but the flying-type was not out of energy yet. She began to caw loudly, raucously at her opponents, flapping her wings violently and striking out at the munchlax. In the trees alongside, several of the group of their pidgey audience began to caw and shriek as well, causing quite an Uproar. The sound grew to become almost deafening, fuelling pidgey as she battered Beelzebub with wings, talons, and beak.

Quieting down a little but by no means falling silent, the pidgey moved back, hovering a foot above the ground as she stared down her opponents with fierce eyes. Beelzebub was not seriously harmed by the Uproar, but he was left with a few scrapes and scratches on his face and shoulders from the pidgey’s sharp talons and beak. It seemed that Hope was safe from being attacked this turn, but due to the random nature of Uproar, he may very well be in for the same thing as his ally next turn. The noise from the pidgey in the trees seemed to reinforce Elise’s opponent’s courage and the pidgey cried out confidently, though she still received no assistance. This battle was only just beginning, and even if she was outnumbered, it seemed to be going rather well for the flying-type so far. Oh, how wonderful it would be to say she bested a handler!

The little skirmish that had erupted between the three Pokémon left Elise feeling both excited and restless. Certainly this was her first battle, something that would be enough to bring excitement in any young adult of her age, but there was also the fact that neither side had gained a decisive advantage over the other after the first blows were exchanged. Beel was the unfortunate victim of an Uproar, a wild and savage series of scratches and pecks that had hit him in his face and shoulders, the little bird had done more than enough damage to make him feel a little bit sore. Hope had waddled a bit closer to Beel, looking worriedly at the larger Pokémon who reassured him with a light wave of his arm. He was fine! This was nothing compared to the pain that bird would suffer once he was done with her!

However, Elise was a little less reassured about the whole confrontation. Nearly tempted to draw her bow and arrow to join into the battle the only thing that kept the girl at bay was the fact her Pokémon considered it their battle, and it would have been simply rude for her to intrude upon the moment. No, this was a case where she would have to trust her Pokémon and take the role as a commander. It was an important burden to bear, but at the same time she hoped that she would get enough of a presence to make both her Pokémon listen at her instructions. Beelzebub seemed to be a rather impulsive little Munchlax what could make the idea of a cooperation a bit more difficult. Then again, it didn't hurt to try!

"Beel, take a defensive stance and prepare to Counter the opponent's attack!"

The Munchlax seemed to hesitate for a moment, part of him feeling the urge to get up close and personal with that smug bird and punch her into the ground, or something to that effect. However, he soon realized that following Elise's orders meant producing a similar effect with much less effort! In the end he was a Munchlax so he wasn't the swiftest runner in the field. Taunting the bird with a mischievous smirk and several rude gestures the Munchlax took a defensive pose and prepared himself for a potential retaliation. Of course Elise knew that with the bird in such a frenzy there might had been a possibility for her to lash out at her Togepi, who was much less threatening in demeanor than his companion.

"Hope, I want you to look closely at Beel's actions and copy them exactly like he does. Use that Mirror Move to create a defense for yourself and Counter a potential attack."

The Togepi nodded his head several times in response, seemingly trying her best to mirror the motions Beel had made. It was kind of amusing for her to see the two Pokémon make exactly the same motion, and at least Elise was confident now that no matter who got attacked, the Pidgey would receive one hell of a beating in return!

And yet she couldn't help but feel her excitement skyrocket, the entire feeling of challenging the skills of her Pokémon against those of another Pokémon... It truly was an addicting feeling in a certain way.

"Come on Beel! Hope! Let's show that Pidgey you can't mess with the Guardians!"

The Togepi released a cheerful cry, seemingly infected with Elise's excitement while Beel's response was even more energetic. He bellowed a deep roar, slamming his hands on his full belly while eying the Pidgey with a look that could likely terrorize even a Tyranitar. In the end who wouldn't be scared if a Munchlax was looking at you with eyes that didn't see a Pokémon but a delicious chicken fillet that was simply waiting to be put on a campfire and turned into a late afternoon snack.

"Beel... Wipe that drool from your mouth, we're not going to eat her."

The Munchlax swiftly wiped a arm before his mouth, trying to conceal his embarrassment while letting out several cries in complain. He totally wasn't drooling about the idea of eating the Pidgey! He was obviously drooling at the thought of victory! Yeah right... who was he kidding at this point? Obviously he wanted to beat up this rude feathered bag of smugness, eating her or not was just a minor side-detail at this point!

Dishevelled after the first round of blows, the pidgey did not seem to take much note of the change in stance of her opponents. As before, the human speech went right over her head, not that her Uproar and the birds echoing it in the trees nearby allowed her any calm to think about strategy at the moment anyway. Hovering before Beel and Hope and crowing loudly, the flying-type watched to see what they would do next, waiting for an opening for her own next move without any concern about what they might be planning to do next. Counting on the munchlax’s slowness and the togepi’s small size to give her an advantage, the pidgey wasn’t very concerned about the wounds she had sustained so far.

It took a few seconds before she realized that Elise’s pokemon weren’t going to attack at all and instead had taken defensive positions, waiting to receive the pidgey’s next attack – and in Beel’s case, sending rude gestures and frightening looks. Without giving much thought to why they had paused and fuelled by adrenaline at the thought of defeating a handler, the bird wasted no time in fluttering forward in her next attack. Much like the first time, she came at the pair in a flurry of feathers and talons, slamming into the munchlax’s stomach and flailing about with all her might. In the trees in the area surrounding them, the other pidgey cawed and squawked as they watched their sister’s attack.

As before, Beel was left with plenty of scratches from the bird’s sharp talons and beak, and this time even some brown feathers left at his feet. Despite the pain of his injuries, the munchlax wasted no time in striking back, catching the pidgey before she flew away with a powerful punch from his fist. Doubling the damage he had received from her attack, Beel sent her tumbling back to the other end of their makeshift battlefield with a pained shriek where she landed heavily on her back. While he may have taken his fair share of damage this turn, it was clear that his opponent had taken quite a bit more.

There were a few tense seconds while the pidgey lay where she had landed, even the birds in the trees falling silent. Then, just when it seemed that maybe she had fainted from the strike, the pidgey shuddered and then struggled to her feet, flapping her wings. Cawing angrily at her opponents, she used her wings to help her hop back over so that she could be in range of them once more and then flapped them rapidly to return to her low aerial position once more, though it clearly took her much more effort this time. Her brown and cream coloured feathers covered any physical injuries that she had received during the battle, but her ruffled appearance and diminished power were evidence enough that Elise and her team were closing in on the victory here.

The birds in the trees seemed to be unsure about the battle now, and they remained mostly silent until the injured pidgey fought her way back into the air and resumed her Uproar, hooting and calling, though much more weakly and much lower to the ground than before. Due to the nature of the move, even if the pidgey hoped to escape, she had no choice but to complete her next strike. Despite her unhappiness at trapping herself with her own move, the pidgey clung to the hope that she might strike first and knock out Beelzebub before he could do the same to her. Things had gone wrong so quickly…

As the reality of her situation sunk in for the pidgey, she was alarmed to find that she was beginning to feel respect for the human and her team. Though the munchlax and the togepi were forced to consort with the human, they did not seem to mind, and furthermore, they seemed to be better off than she, a free pokemon, was! It only took one look at Beel to tell that they were well-fed, and it was only becoming more and more apparent that they were trained well, too. Of all the humans to lose to, maybe this one wouldn’t be so bad.

Despite the injuries he had suffered, it was clear that Beelzebub wasn't going to be back down. He was agitated, and the fight with the Pidgey was causing him a surge of adrenaline. The Togepi had slowly dropped out of his stance, looking up at Elise, seemingly waiting for the next course of action the girl was planning. Even Beelzebub seemed to be obeying her instructions, and it was then all of a sudden the girl's voice carried a certain commanding tone, one filled with confidence and pride.

"Pidgey, what is it that you seek? Is it power? Or is it respect?"

The girl's voice was surprisingly loud, loud enough to boom over the weakening uproar. Beelzebub and Hope looked with a hint of confusion at her, uncertain about what the girl was planning when finally she slowly approached the makeshift battlefield. The girl's eyes were focused on the bird while she stepped beside her Pokémon and continued her words.

"My respect you have already gained. There are not many who dare to fight against odds like this. And yet what is it that you see before you?"

She motioned at Beelzebub and her Togepi, hoping that her actions would keep it from attacking her. However, in case she would attack again Elise would have been prepared. She nodded at her Munchlax, instructing him soundlessly to remain on the defensive, should she attack again. She herself had been prepared to try to deflect a potential attack with her arms, rather than being hit in the face should the bird attack again.

"They are warriors, proud Guardians and members of my family, do not mistake them as pets, for they are just as precious to me as a human could be. It is because we have each other to depend on that we can grow stronger, to reach for the ambitions we hold. How about you Pidgey, do you hold any desires of your own?"

The girl lowered a hand to pet her Munchlax's head, whispering some words of encouragement. She was going to try to convince this Pokémon to join her, to defeat it through words rather than fainting it outright. It would be difficult, due to her being stuck in an Uproar, but maybe her courage and determination would prevail.

"If it's power you seek, then why not become our comrade in arms? On my journey there will be plenty of challenges to overcome, and together we might be able to accomplish the ambitions we hold, ambitions that might be impossible alone. Those two joined me out of their free will, and so I shall offer you this opportunity."

Slowly she pulled a Pokeball out of her bag and placed it on the ground between herself and the Pidgey. Now it was time to see the results of her idea. The words that were to be spoken, would either convince the Pidgey to join her, or force her to render it unconscious.

"You are a warrior Pidgey, and I respect that so I will not try to force you into captivity. Instead I want you to know this Pokeball isn't going to serve as a prison, but as a symbol. Those two are allowed out of their Pokeball any time they want, but the Pokeball is a sign of their trust in me, of the agreement we forged that we will accomplish great things together. If you desire to join us, and find the means to reach your desires, then all you need to do is touch that sphere."

Of course Hope was a little bit wary, knowing that because of the Uproar there was a small chance the Pidgey would retaliate right away, but if not then, maybe they could find a new ally.

"I am Elise Von Eisenberg, the leader of this 'family' and now invite you to join us. What say you Pidgey, will you remain alone, or will you become 'Aquila', the proud hunter who will fly along me, and who has the courage to turn her dreams into reality?"

The Munchlax's body remained tense, ready to act at any moment the bird shown a sign of attacking, but until then he would leave things to Elise. May Mew know what the hell was going on in the girl's mind, but at the very least she had some interesting ideas! Of course it was a risky gamble, but it was one Elise was willing to make. She desired to see the result of her attempts to convince the Pidgey to join her, and if she did succeed then perhaps she would gain a powerful ally. If not, then her Pokémon would soon try to defeat the bird Pokémon, render her unconscious and harmless. Still, even Beelzebub had to admit this was one hell of an intense battle, perhaps way more intense than he had imagined, but all in all he had experienced an awesome fight battle. There was just one thing that bothered him, the fact that he hoped Elise would give that bit of meat she had left, and promised him if he tagged along.

The Munchlax looked at the Pidgey, seemingly growing a little bit curious about the decision the bird might take. The fact Elise had stepped amidst them was a figurative sign she wanted to talk to it like an equal, a bit of a foolish decision, to put herself in harm's way, but it could also be a way for her to earn the respect of the bird Pokémon. Whatever the Pidgey would decide on doing, Beelzebub would support Elise all the way, even if that meant finishing this battle! It was a thought Hope shared, the Togepi preparing himself for the conclusion to this battle. Despite being young he had an exciting experience, and the idea of getting a friend, even if it was a slightly intimidating Pidgey was more than enough to making him hope the Pidgey would accept the invitation and join Elise's family, on the grand adventures that awaited them.

Summary:

Even distracted by her Uproar as she was, the pidgey couldn’t help but turn to face Elise when the Guardian spoke to her so directly. Save for a curse or a challenge, handlers didn’t often speak to wild pokemon like her and it caught the bird off-guard, causing her to dim her cawing for a moment to try to listen to what Elise had to say. The words wouldn’t make sense to her, she knew, but the pidgey fancied herself to be quite adept at reading the tones of one’s voice and hoped to make out at least some of what the Guardian was trying to convey. Beelzebub’s watchful eyes kept the flying-type on her toes, so to speak, ready to retaliate if he should disobey his handler and attack.

When the girl stepped forward to stand beside her pokemon, however, the pidgey wasn’t sure what to think. On the one hand, it showed her trust in both Beel and the wild pidgey, her bravery in the face of a dangerous situation, coming forward to attempt to diffuse it with words rather than violence… But then again, she might just be a naïve young girl that doesn’t truly understand the dangers even something so weak and commonplace as a pidgey might pose. Initially, the flying-type was unsure of what to think, even for a brief second pondering thrashing out at her to teach her a lesson, but there was something in Elise’s voice that made the pidgey pause and listen to the foreign words spoken with such intensity and passion.

The words made very little sense to the pidgey, her own name being the only one she could truly recognize with any confidence. She watched at first with curiosity and a bit of confusion, but soon she realized what the girl was saying, even if the words themselves held no meaning. She was speaking of bravery and pride and honour, of adventure and glory, of… joining their group. Pokeballs were not unknown to the pidgey and, like most wild pokemon, she was wary of the magical devices. Had she been standing on the ground, she would have flinched back a step instinctively, but as she was still hovering in the air, the flying-type was spared that embarrassment and continued listening as if she was unaffected.

The more she listened, pidgey felt herself swayed by the Guardian’s words, and even more so, the way her pokemon regarded her, listening to her commands obediently, respectfully. As her attention was distracted from the battle, her Uproar began to quiet, and soon the birds in the trees around them had fallen silent. Now it seemed like everyone was watching her, waiting to see what she would do. In truth, the pidgey was waiting to see what she would choose too, still finding herself on the fence about the whole thing. She had weighed the pros and cons of being trained/captured by a handler, but it was a weighty commitment and that made her hesitate.

It was the conclusion to Elise’s speech that really got to her, something she had never even considered – a name. In the wild, she and her brothers and sisters had simply been ‘pidgey’ and that was it. With that being nearly all she had ever known, the prospect of having a name of her very own was very exciting despite the tense situation. Aquila, she pondered, repeating the name over in her mind. It was a fair name; suitable for a brave, elegant pidgey such as herself. Like a child presented with the prospect of a new toy, the pidgey felt herself get swept up in the excitement of being Aquila, commanding her human and pokemon soldiers into battle…

But she saw to it that Elise and her pokemon didn’t see any hint of it, instead putting on a façade of indifference as she dropped down to the ground. It was out of true wariness that she paused, however, eyeing both Beel and Hope for a good few moments before hesitantly taking a slow step toward the ball. Even pretending to be Aquila and believing Elise’s promises, the ball made her nervous and she procrastinated actually touching it as much as she could, pecking at the dirt around it and flapping her wings. Finally, though, she gathered her courage and tapped the ball with her beak, immediately being sucked inside.

There was tense silence as Elise and her pokemon watched the ball rock back and forth on the ground in front of them. Had the pidgey had second thoughts? It almost seemed so, but at the last moment, the ball fell still. Elise had just made her first capture!

Before she had much chance to celebrate her victory, there came the sound of someone clapping, several feet behind her. Turning, she would see William standing there with his magmar at his side, both grinning at her. ”Congratulations, Elise! I missed out on the action, unfortunately, but it looks like you had one heck of a battle!” He gave her a congratulatory pat on the shoulder, while magmar curiously inspected the scene of the battle. ”It’s just about time to head out. Are you almost ready?”

”It looks like Beel could do with some healing after that scuffle – and I bet his opponent does, too! Come over here, Beelzebub, I’ll get you healed right up.” William knelt down so to be level with the normal-type, beckoning him over with a friendly smile. Fishing a potion out of his bag, he gently applied it to the munchlax’s wounds, easing the pain and speeding up the healing process. He would offer the same process to Aquila if Elise wished, as well as a pat on the head for the uninjured Hope.

With their pokemon all ready to face whatever lay ahead of them, William and Elise packed up the rest of the their camp and prepared to set out on their mission. The sun was still bright in the sky and William seemed confident that they were on time, but given that there were lives on the line, the pair knew that it was best not to dawdle.
