Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Character: Seung Han
picture
carni's pic

Full Name: Seung Han (in Myeongese, it'd be pronounced as "Han Seung")
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Demiromantic asexual

Class: Handler
Starting City: Cape Augustine
Patron or Trick Lord: N/A
Credits: Lv.07 [ 1.75 / 10 ]
Condition: Fine
Aptitudes

Overall Appearance:
Seung is clearly not of Harper descent; with dark hair and dark eyes of the southern lands, she stands out in a crowd, even in the port city that is Cape Augustine. As a foreigner who is in hiding she tends to wear simple, yet ultimately non-memorable clothing, with the traditional Myeongese robes exchanged the more utilitarian tunics, shirts, and trousers of Harper. Her sword is slung at her hip, with plain armor that seeks to bear as minimal weight on its user as possible, and looks downright natural with it, as if her blade is merely another aspect of her appearance.

Myeongese heritage aside, Seung tends to be a lean figure with stark, distinct lines rather than graceful ones; a lifetime of learning the bow and the sword has given her callouses on her hands, and she knows how to use her five-foot-five height to her advantage. Still, her body is covered in the marks of a fighter and someone who lives their life without fear -- scars on her knees from tumbles off of a horse, and beneath the callouses on her hands, marks from handling blades without gloves.

But there are small traces of foreign influence, if people care to look; her Common and Harperian might be good, but there are undercurrents of sharper syllables and awkward pronunciations every now and then. She tends to wield her single sword as if she's used to another blade filling her other hand as well, and under pressure tends to resort to her home language, no matter how much that will confuse the people around her.

In lieu of actual fighting, Seung moves like anyone that's comfortable with their body would: smoothly, knowing the exact dimensions of their height and weight and balance. She doesn't quite move like she's dancing, but quite close, all quiet footsteps and precise shifts. She doesn't often smile, but when she does it's something small and tucked-away, and quickly hidden or dropped. Her voice is low and halting, with foreign language if not the words themselves, and she tends to keep her silence more than anything else.

She's got a sword, though, and she knows how to use it. Put a sword in her hand and she looks like a seasoned swordswoman; put two, and she walks like a persian, all steady, slick movements that look more instinctual than practiced.
Distinguishing Features:
  • Asian
  • Myeongese accent
  • Oddly proficient in dual-wielding
Overall Personality:
Perhaps the first notable thing about Seung is that she is not a particularly sociable person. Growing up as a daughter of a military family has left her with a sense of honor, duty, and pride, but at her core she is more comfortable with silence and pokemon than say, a party or a festival. She can still talk politely and make small conversation, of course -- her mother demanded nothing less -- but overall she'd rather stay at home and practice her swordsmanship more than celebrate someone's birthday. As a consequence most people see her as quiet and unsociable. Seung certainly makes no attempts to correct their opinion, disregarding them entirely in favor of her family and close kin and friends.

However, on the sparring field she regards her opponents with an intense sort of concentration; growing up around swordplay her entire life, she can wield blades either on the ground or mounted, and though the Myeongese army does not use it as a standard anymore, can also fight with two swords. Two years of only quietly being able to practice the skill has dulled it, however, but given a few minutes Seung can move with two blades as if they have never left her hands. Her bowmanship is adequate in comparison, though she knows enough to hit a target six times out of ten.

Additionally, a childhood of watching her parents quietly fighting a rebellion has given her a less-than-shiny world view. She might live most of her life on the straight and narrow, but she also believes that war is not glory, that murder is not always a life wasted - in the right circumstances - and that everyone deserves, at the very least, a second chance. In this way she is an idealist, but in the end she is a pragmatic one -- everyone might deserve a second chance, but her sort of mercy does not equate it to a third one.

At the same time, she believes rather strongly in one's right to educate oneself in the happenings of the world. Ignorance is, perhaps, the one thing that she loathes above all else, as well as excuses. In this she might be ruthless -- her temper is long and her anger is a cold sort of thing, never explosive or fiery -- but if she is ruthless about excuses from other people, then she is also equally as reluctant to take excuses from herself. Perfectionism, some might call it, but to Seung it is simply her temperament and her way of life.

Though, she is not without her fears. She fears what others might fear -- losing loved ones, failure, the like -- but her largest fear is of being forgotten, as though she has tried to be outspoken and memorable once, she finds it often tiring and only ending in awkwardness on her end. It has led to her rather remarkable habit of leaving little things behind -- a carving upon wooden countertops, a small figurine of Myeongcheon-native pokemon left in parks. The desk in her room that she shares with her brother is lined with little figurines of varying size and species, though none of them are painted, leaving them in their natural colors.

Her goal in life, then, is to survive until she gets stronger and she is able to return to Myeongcheon, and bring the rest of her family back over. Though she hasn't said it explicitly yet, she has slowly given up on taking back the country, and is now focused on building a new life in a new place.
History:
If anyone asked about the Han family in Myeongcheon today, they'd receive a lot of confused looks and questions about which family they were asking about. The Han family was less of a family and more of a clan, with a sprawling list of extended relations that came and went from the country. Still, at its core it was a family with strong loyalties to the old Myeongese kingdom and strong roots at its military, and this was where Seung was born into.

Raised as the younger of a brother-sister pair, Seung was part of the newest generation that was born after Myeongcheon was annexed into a territory by a neighboring country. As a result she wasn't told to join the military, as her brother was before said military went through changes to reflect the nation's status, but was taught the skills anyway. Those included swordplay, both mounted and not, but with the Han clan's roots in the armed guards as well as a Captain father, she was also taught the signature style of the old army: dual-wielding. She wasn't alone in learning the art, either; her brother was also learning it at their father's knee, and her mother, a long retired veteran sailor, picked it up again alongside them both.

The other cousins from their age range were learning how to wield two swords as easily as they breathed, as well, though they did not train in it as ruthlessly as Seung and her brother Jeong's parents pushed them to. Perhaps they knew what was coming; perhaps not. Regardless, underneath the shadow of an annexed country and the silently simmering rage of its citizens -- though young as they were, Seung and Jeong heard nothing of this -- they learnt how to defend and fight, starting at the age of seven. The two years' difference and her consequent need to catch up meant nothing to Seung -- it just meant she'd have to work harder, was all.

But learning how to fight was not all that they learned -- their sailor of a mother taught them to read the stars as well, which was particularly useful once Jeong became adventurous enough to wander away from home in the dark and Seung tagged along with him, and how to swim while conserving energy, or at least long enough to stall until someone could rescue them. Their father taught them woodcraft until they were able to carve little things with the skill, though only Seung regularly practiced it. Bak Young-ki, an uncle from their mother's side (and twice removed, though no one quite remembered how), an archer first and foremost before he was the swordsman that was expected of their family, taught them archery as well. If Seung was only proficient enough at archery, then her brother Jeong was a master at it -- by twelve he could hit standing targets with nigh-perfect accuracy, and two years later he could guarantee anything moving as well.

(Sometimes she resented him that, being better than her, casting such a shadow where her mother approved with open eyes and open heart and her father grudgingly admitted to his son being declared a prodigy by her boisterous uncle. But her kind, laughing, good brother came first, and she came second, and she'd just have to stand and bear the fact that she was just one Han among many in the clan that could dual-wield, only proficient at archery, and sister to the one that was a master at it.)

Not long after the siblings mastered their chosen weapons, though, the Han family closed ranks. Traditionally they weren't a very centralized family; relations married and moved away, after all, even if much of the direct line and descendants chose to remain in the port city Incheon where it was reputed that the first Han established his home. But those who refused to fight or would rather bend their pride to accept the new government and spare the other, smaller families from backlash either moved away from Incheon to other cities or to foreign lands. Their uncle was one of those that moved to Harper Region, choosing to take the long, dangerous journey where the rest of their family did not.

Looking back, Seung recognized it what it was -- minimizing the parties that would be affected by what her parents did. But at the time, all she could see was that her family was moving away no good reason, that her parents' lips were permanently frowning and silent, and her brother started to lose his smile, bit by bit by bit.

Her parents told them outright what was going on when her brother was sixteen and she was fourteen, though, a full year after their uncle Young-ki had left. They had taken a large risk in telling their children of what their father and his elder brothers, the leaders in the clan from their generation, had chosen to do; but curious Jeong had already deduced the reasons it, from talking to people in the streets and in the port, and together with Seung they'd figured out the rest. That their parents were fighting a rebellion ultimately didn't come as a surprise to them.

But that didn't mean that being set away from the quiet underground fight didn't leave a mark on them both. In those three years that the two siblings spent officially aware of a rebellion, Seung swore off of joining the military or any other recognized group of armed soldiers, and Jeong spent more and more time with his bow, becoming silent and withdrawn. Where Seung was determined to stand firm in the face of the gritty world, Jeong started to crack. Perhaps the only thing that saved her brother from becoming completely disillusioned with their annexed government and taking more reckless, risky actions, then, was the fact that one day their parents, having broken curfew one too many times, were accused of inciting a rebellion.

It wasn't that inaccurate -- Han Nari and Han Minki were two influential figures in the growing Incheon rebellion movement, as small as it was. But it was a quiet rebellion a reason, and none came to their defense when the local military hauled the both of them away. Jeong had been a month away from his eighteenth birthday, then; and the judge had known the Han family his entire life, having served with them in the old Myeongese military. So Han Jeong and Han Seung slipped away from beneath the new government's radar, simply deported and not arrested like their mother and father (and the rest of their older relatives) had been.

They took with them their cousins and younger relatives -- better to leave in twos and threes, and gather at the port to board a single ship safety in numbers -- and left Harper, where their uncle was. And slowly on the halting, dangerous journey to the foreign land, they learned Common and Harperian, or at the very least enough to get by with the sailors, and eventually Jeong started to smile again. It was worth it Seung, even with the cramped spaces and sometimes fatal waters, and so they arrived at Harper's Cape Augustine where Bak Young-ki had set up his home in the spring.

However, they are insistent that their precious only daughter not be at all injured when retrieved, and in fact if she has so much as a bruise and she blames whoever caught her they'll likely call the Guardians to arrest them instead of giving out a reward. The daughter is described as a canny and perceptive lass by the sailors her family employs, though her family claims she is a sweet but hopeless romantic. She left from Cape Augustine on her father's personal sailing ship. [unique to Seung Han, cannot be transferred]

Kyung

Kyung is like Seung, in many ways, and also different in just as many. He seeks solitude like she does, has little experience with crowds of people in general, but he is young, yet, and his code of honor and integrity is still solid and intact. He tends to be the moral compass, oftentimes, being so set in his beliefs and what he thinks to be the right path that he will often be judgmental of others not doing the same thing. But there's room enough for him to grow, and time aplenty, and has the added boon of being a fast learner and good retention skills. His bond with Seung is young, yet, but it'll only grow stronger.

In battle he does not like to take the offensive, instead waiting for a clear opening to strike in.

http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/371bagon.png http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/e335251.gif
Sigrún

She is a dragon and she reflects that -- she does what she thinks is right and holds onto it with all the pride of one who knows they're virtually at the top of the world. Sigrun might be reckless and stubborn and even defiant at times, but likes where she is right now, even if it's not where she started at. Like any dragon, she can and is willing to use force to get her way, or dig in her heels and simply out-stubborn any opposition to what she wants. The main reason that she stays with Seung, however, is because the woman has not truly commanded her into anything -- only requests, with "Please"'s and "Thank you"'s tacked on at the end. To her, things like that are important.

Sigrun will charge anything and everything in battle. What else did you expect from a nigh-indestructible dragon. Her method of combat is something along the lines of "There Is No Such Thing As Overkill."

http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/x_and_y/Furfrou.png http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/e335251.gif
Mugunghwa

Mugunghwa has been to a lot of places and knows the world, and she has a confidence in herself that manifests as a sort of pride -- one that does not look down upon others but instead she finds it unnecessary to rise to taunts and tricks. She knows the tales of her kind and takes it seriously, and it is apparent in the way that she moves -- she moves to defend first, attack afterwards. She provides Seung a sort of calm, central point when Kyung and Sigrun come to a head with their differences, and the furfrou in turn tends to rely in Seung for her own level-headed ways.

She tends to switch between offense and support in battle, due to her ability and wide move pool. It's not uncommon to find her covering her foolhardy teammates' backs, or distract their opponents to create an opening that Kyung or Sigrún can take advantage of.

Wild, prideful, sharp and harsh in the way of those who are made of their elements but not unkind.
