Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

There are many interpretations regarding death. Truly, it is the end, but sometimes, humans and Pokemon who die manifest as spirits upon our world, and some theorize that those who do not might have gone into a different realm, perhaps that of Arceus and Giratina, although there was no knowing until one met their end. But every end could also be a beginning, if a bit uncertain for the deceased, then certainly for the bereaved. Now the gears of fate were turning.

It was afternoon, just a little after Drake finally made the decision to open the box that contained his modest, and final, inheritance. The sun was up, and had a little more before it descended into the horizon, but the chill of autumn was beginning to seep into the air. Fall---it was the season of spirits, as well. Perhaps that made it more timely, this beginning of his. Death of his parents had stopped him, and now the death of his grandmother moved him, in turn.

Even with the colder weather Seaway was bustling with activity. A couple of musicians wandered the streets, their Pokemon making sounds in time with their instruments, for a strangely pleasant cacophony.

http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/402kricketune.png http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/294loudred.png

A peddler of obscure, curious, 'exotic' wares traversed the paths, seeking to gain customers here instead of competing with others in the markets. A group of foreigners to the region pointed this way and that to the colorful sights; some of them had noticed the musicians and the peddler. Life continued on, even with the passing of the dead.

Drake had choices to make, now. He could interact with these people, or seek the market or the taverns--- the boards in there could provide him with possible requests to earn money. He could even seek out the Harper's Passion's guild building, as they were known for granting various benefits to handlers in return for membership. He could seek out employment and Pokemon in the docks... or he could seek out Pokemon here in the city...

The cooler fall weather seemed to have little effect on Drake as he walked through the city streets. Finding some form of employment or source of gold was the only thing on his mind. For the first time in a long time, he felt truly and completely focused. The task at hand was of vital importance: his new friend, Othello the Slowpoke, was going to need food (and so was he for that matter). His inheritance would last him a decent amount of time yes, but he certainly wanted to avoid begging on the side of the streets when it ran out. Getting some source of income would be the only way to escape that fate. Perhaps the boards in the taverns would be a good place to start-

His train of thought was interrupted by the sight of a faint specter hovering in the alleyway. Squinting his eyes, Drake tried to make out what the form could possibly be. The orange glare of the setting sun obscured his vision. He took a step closer to help make out the details; a dimly lit red eye, a vague outline of a skull and a wispy, jet black tail. Just as Hudson managed to put the clues together he heard something that made him stop in his tracks. It was the sound of his Grandmother, crying in pain.

Drake quickly turned back around and walked away from the alley as fast as he possibly could. Once he was a good distance away he shot a glance over his shoulder to confirm the spirit wasn't following him. He took a few deep breaths, and tried to stop the shaking of his hands. It couldn't have possibly really been her,he must have been just hearing things. With the sounds of the dead ringing in his ears, Drake tried to clear his mind by scanning the area around him. The first thing that caught his eye was the peddler slowly making his way down the street. His cart was laden with intriguing little trinkets and other oddities. Drake couldn't help but imagine what they were, how he got them, and who he could possibly be.

Eyeing the contents of the cart, Drake slowly approached the peddler, completely fascinated by his wares. He wasn't quite sure what they were or what they did, but that's what made it pique his curiosity about them. Maybe the strange looking skull was from a Pokemon only found deep in a vast mountain range countless miles away. Perhaps the jar of silver powder was used for incantations and rituals meant to allow you to take a glimpse into the distant future. Whatever they were, Drake had millions of questions buzzing throughout his mind. Not wanting to overwhelm the peddler, he settled on asking only one.

"Where do you get all of these things," he questioned earnestly, looking at the peddler with interest.

.

The peddler had been making his slow and winding way down the path when Drake approached; a hand came up to swipe at his brow. Tanned and with dark hair that was slowly but surely turning white, the old man with his bouffalant-pulled cart could be from anywhere in the Region.

Then he saw Drake, and his expression widened, a smile splitting his lips. "Ah, an interested party! Come here, come here, let me show you what I have." A pat on one of the bouffalant's horns brought the great beast to a stop, and he waved Drake to the back of the cart with a conspiratorial grin.

There were odd things aplenty here, all for sight and none for touch. The peddler would show Drake a bolt of cloth that shimmered with jewel-bright colors - made from silicoon silk from the far-off countries over the sea, he said with a wink, and that skull was from an old, old pokemon long ago; keeping it with one's belongings would ensure them never lost. A small vial made of glass and with something that shimmered and moved like sand inside, the peddler claimed was from the bones of a pawniard; a charm that would protect his mind and his path, and keep him from the influences of the evil.

Drake's question brought a sly smile to his face and a miming of sewed-lips, his face unexpectedly grave. "That, my dear boy, is a secret." His expression broke, though, into another bright smile. It looked more than a little sly on the peddler's part, though whether that was because he was someone's grandfather or because he thought he had a customer hook, line, and sinker was not sure. "Ah, but did you want anything from this old man? Come, come! For you I will discount ten - no, twenty - gold from the final price. What would you like, boy, what do you seek?"

The peddler clapped his hands together and waited. For his wares, he cited prices starting at fifty gold, not including his offer a discount. How much Drake could haggle the prices down with the old man - if he could at all - was yet unclear.

Of course, Drake did not have to take him up on the peddler's offer; he could decline the offer politely and leave, onwards to less suspicious folks and places. The General Store and other such shops in Seaway would surely have similarly interesting items from a more trustworthy source.

Whatever the case, he was free to decide for himself, for good or for ill.

{One quick question: Should we continue the story as if it is still fall? I think it would be kind of weird for it to suddenly be summer.}

As the old peddler described his mysterious wares, Drake's curiosity and interest only grew. Were these objects really so powerful? He couldn't even decide what was more interesting; the shimmering silicoon silk, the ancient Pokemon skull, or the vile of magic powder. Eventually, his eyes settled upon the old skull. Its hollow, black eye sockets seemed to stare right at him. He squinted his eyes at the old thing, resisting the urge to reach out and brush his fingers across it's withered, white surface. Surely something that would prevent him from being lost could be quite useful in the future.

He had enough self-control to realize that the silicoon silk would be nothing but a waste of money, and he wasn't too worried about getting manipulated by some evil spirit that the powder would protect him from. Getting lost, however, was something that happened to Drake on a frequent basis. Surely he could afford to spend 30 gold on the old skull. It would save him the trouble of having to worry about losing himself a new place. Drake reached for his coin bag and made his intention of purchasing the skull known. "I would love to buy the old skull."

As he pulled out the 30 gold, he suddenly felt the need to hesitate. Money had never really meant much to him, his grandmother had seemingly endless coffers from which he could take whatever he needed. Usually she didn't bat an eye when he spent an excessive amount on exotic fruits or some clothing shipped in from far away, but on occasion she would see what he brought home and scold him. Drake vividly remembered the time he bought a jar of Marowak bones that were supposed to give visions into the future when burned. When his grandmother saw the bones she started to laugh at how easily he had been fooled by a sly stranger with a pleasant smile. To prove a point, she threw one of the bones into the fire place. When nothing happened she turned to him and said sternly, "Never bring anything like this into my home again. If there's one thing I won't let you do, it's waste your money on some lowly con artist."

Drake looked back up, and something in the gleam of the old man's eye suddenly seemed a little more suspicious than it did before. Maybe he was better off spending his money on something less risky.

"On second thought," he said politely, "I think I will have decline your offer. Thank you though, and I wish you the best of luck."

He quickly shut his coin bag and walked away before the peddler could try and change his mind. Drake decided he needed to focus on finding some sort of a job rather than go shopping. As much as the idea of work sounded unappealing to him, it was probably for the best. He and Othello couldn't live off scraps in some back alley. His family, wherever they were now, would never forgive him. The city docks would surely have some job listings. Working for some fishery was not something Drake was willing to do, but maybe some shop keep would hire him to find pearls at the ocean floor or hunt for rare shells on one of the uninhabited island. With a little more determination in his steps, he headed for the docks.

[[ +0.7 EXP for you! And yes, your Travels will continue to take place during the fall. ]]

The peddler looked disappointed - more so, in fact, at the sight of Drake pulling out his coin purse and then returning it to his bag. He walked away, not seeing Drake as worth his effort, muttering under his breath about the "tease" as he left.

No one would stop or accost him on his way to the docks, save for a wingull that cawed at him annoyingly and seemed like it was following him for some reason, flying from rooftop to rooftop in the same direction and not stopping the loud call. By the docks, the noise was less audible considering the noise from the incoming boats, people shouting to each other across the docks, and pokemon both wild and handler-owned running amok. Drake would have to watch his step as he made his way towards a small gathering of handlers by a series of pidgey-skin parchments posted on a wooden plank: the Job Board.

There were a great number of notices on the board, some unreadable because they had been drenched, others requesting tasks that were too complicated or pokemon that Drake didn't have on his team. Three, however, looked like they could be a good match for him considering his current party and level of experience as a handler:

QUOTE
Simi has gone missing! She'd never wander off on her own. Please help me find her! I'll be standing on the western edge of the docks wearing a green skirt.

This first message was written in a tidy hand, although the tone was informal compared to the next:

QUOTE
The Guardians are looking for assistance in finding a criminal believed to have fled by boat. Water pokemon necessary to aid in the search. Contact Guardsman Bennett at the Swooping Swanna for more information.

Finally, one last mission remained:

QUOTE
I'm trying to evolve my mantyke and need help catching a remoraid. Please come find me by the local church's tower.

Drake had the option of taking any of these missions, or trying to find his own way. The water was nearby, full of pokemon to try to catch. A corsola bobbed in the waves, smiling at passersby as a finneon darted by. On land, two machop watched a machoke unload goods from a boat, while an irate krabby sat by the boat's side and pinched any human or pokemon who came too close.

If none of the wild pokemon or jobs on the Job Board piqued Drake's interest, there was also a young boy in ragged clothes standing near the Job Board, hissing another option for those nearby to hear: "I know where the ship wrecked; follow me for some easy treasure!"

Whichever option Drake chose, he was sure to have an exciting first adventure.

Drake had been to the docks many times in his life, so it was no surprise to see that it was bustling with activity. The sea of people walking about was something Drake was very accustomed to, and he was easily able to make his way through the crowd and towards the listings without bumping into anyone or their pokemon. The only real thing out of the ordinary was the incessant squawking of a wingull. The thing seemed intent on following him. Drake mused that it probably thought that he had some scraps of food to give it. The best course of action for now was to simply ignore the wingull, Drake didn't want to cause a scene in the middle of all these people by yelling at the bird. If the wingull decided to fire some water down on him in response it would certainly get other people in the crowd wet. Drake had seen many unsuspecting tourists hurl a rock at a pesky wingull, only to get hosed down by a water gun attack in return. If the wingull decided to continue to follow Drake beyond the crowds however, he might give the thing a piece of his mind.

For now, however, Drake shifted his focus to the listings board, examining the possible job opportunities. He narrowed it down to three, and then decided to read through each again to figure the best option. The first job involved a missing "Simi", Drake couldn't figure out if it was a person or a pokemon, it was too vague to tell. As bad as he felt for the poor girl that posted this listing, Drake decided someone else would be better for the job. The second job listing involved an escaped thief, which sounded a little bit too dangerous to Drake. Although he had a sword to defend himself, he wasn't exactly the best swordsman in Harper. It was the third job listing that seemed like it would be the best choice. Drake was fairly familiar with the schools of remoraid that swam about the waters of the port city. Surely it couldn't be too difficult or time consuming to capture one.

Taking a mental note of where he was supposed to meet the boy, Drake turned and walked away from the board. He paid no mind to the suspicious looking lad whispering promises of treasure or the continued cawing of the obnoxious Wingull as he made his departure. But the bright pink coloration of the corsola was something that caught his eye, however, and soon Drake was distracted from his task once again. He walked to the edge of the dock, eyeing the coral pokemon. As the finneon darted past, Hudson only got a quick glimpse of it and was unable to figure out exactly what it was, which only piqued his interest even more.

Surely Drake would have some time to look at the wild pokemon before heading out to get more information about the remoraid job. Approaching the edge of the docks, Drake attempted to get a closer look at whatever water-type had some quickly swam past the corsola. He reached into his bag and pulled out the pokeball that belonged to Othello, keeping it in his hand in case he decided to send the slowpoke out to investigate.

Still, the job prospect stayed in the back of his mind. Did he really have time to be gawking at pokemon when he should be focused on his mission? But the mysterious pokemon was just too hard to resist in the end, and besides, maybe if he captured it he could use it to help catch a remoraid later on. Or at least it could be a good first opponent for Othello to face. It would probably be wise to see how Othello fared in battle before sending it to hunt down a remoraid. With his choice fully justified, Hudson peered down even closer towards the water to try and get a look at what was bellow the surface.

[[ +0.7 EXP! I'm so sorry for the delay of this update. One thing I was confused about - in the update request and a few times in the update, you called your character Hudson, while other times you called him Drake. What's your preferred name for him? I'm going with Drake for this post because that's what's in his bio, but please let me know if you want it changed http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/emoticons/1.png ]]

As Drake peered down to look at the mysterious pokemon, the pokemon in the water was equally curious about the human. Humans passed by every day, but most seemed preoccupied, busy with whatever waited for them upon the shore, and he was not exactly a pokemon who demanded attention. The corsola nearby was attracting more stares - mostly from children, pointing and exclaiming at the bright pink pokemon who smiled back at them - but he was never the object of much attention.

Which made it all the much stranger that a human was now looking down at him. Focusing his eyes on the man, he noticed a poke ball in his hand, which in the finneon's mind could only mean one thing. He was going to capture him.

Not that it would be particularly bad to be captured by a human, but he had seen enough pokemon captured and re-released that he knew not to hope too much. Most of the pokemon caught were the lazy ones, like the corsola, bobbing around without a care. He himself had been chasing a tasty morsel of food, but with his interest now piqued, he was determined to see if the human was willing to put out effort to capture him. Without effort, how was he to know that he wouldn't simply be released back into the water as soon as the human's job was done?

His mind made up, he slipped to the top of the water, poking his head out briefly to give the human enough of a glimpse of him to know his species. That was the first test, to see if he was too commonplace to attract the man's attention. But, assuming the man continued to look, he would spit out a small Water Gun near his feet. Not meant in attack, the Water Gun would hopefully discern the man's motives. Was he there for good, for ill?

Nearby, a remoraid swam - a possible reminder for Drake that he still intended to do the job from the Job Board, but so far, his little detour had no consequences towards the mission. But how long could he stay? And could he win over the finneon in that time, if he chose to do so?
