Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Shale Strelley

The Character

Full Name: Shale Strelley
Age: 19
Gender: (trans)woman
Sexuality: heterosexual

Class: Handler
Starting City: Cape Augustine
Patron or Trick Lord: ---

Overall Appearance:
Shale has always been delicate and pretty in much the same was as a porcelain doll is. She was born frail, and stayed frail as she grew. Her skin is so pale she's almost translucent, only the blue veins under her skin and the faint pink flush of freckles across her nose gives her the appearance of a living creature.
She has brilliant blue-green eyes under heavy lids that gives her an air of permanent exhaustion, contrasted by the rest of her facial features which are pointed and high. She has long, red hair that Shale grooms obsessively and usually keeps tied behind her head.
Actually, Shale is very particular when it comes to hygiene in general. She always makes a point to have soap and perfume close by and, given her background in a family with semi-steady income and her very fashionable elder sister, Shale usually dusts her pale face with rouge and rubs her thin lips in wax balm.

Shale is very slight and slim, with almost no padding of fat or muscles. Not that that means she is entirely without curves.
When she eleven years old, Shale bought a corset that fit her at the time but it very quickly became something Shale couldn't bear to go without, even after she grew out of it. As a result, Shale's lower ribs and belly have an unnatural pinched look to them and it creates an artificial curve to her hips.
Distinguishing Features:
  • Minor deformity in lower portion of rib cage and waist.
  • scars and what have you will be added as they occur

Overall Personality:
Shale is as meek as she is plain, docile, soft-spoken, and easy to scare. The kind of person to flinch and whimper when someone yells at her rather than stand up for herself. She's used to being the victim or the lackey, and she's quick to follow the loudest and most authoritative voice. Shale lacks a real capacity for introspection and is very impressionable, usually defaulting to thinking of herself as whatever people around her tells her she is – via her family she thinks of herself as a weak-willed crybaby and an idiot, despite the fact that she rarely cries and can be clever in a pinch.

Shale has never really had time to be alone and be inside her own head, and when she feels strongly about anything she gets flustered and embarrassed when asked to talk about it – she's more comfortable saying she likes what other people around her say they like.
Despite this she's always idolized the idea of personal freedom and admired the travelers that gave her family business more than the people she was resigned to interact with on her day to day.
History:
At a younger age, Shale's father had been a highway man who fell in love with an Innkeeper's daughter hard and fast. Their romance burned bright and they poured love into each other, the inn they inherited, and their son and daughter. Their son, Ruby, grew up big and strong. He married young and took control of the family inn so his parents could retire and have an easier life as they aged. Their daughter, Fern, was younger by a few years and had always loved the son of the brewer across the way, and after they married they opened a lovely pub down the road from the inn.

    Then came Shale.
By then her mother was believed too old to bear children and she came as an unwanted surprise. Born small and frail and barely alive – too weak even to cry at first. And she stayed small and frail as she grew.
No one really knew what to do with the small 'lad', Shale's older brother was going to inherent the Inn, and after him he had a wife and a son of his own a few months older than Shale herself - and her parents had nothing saved of their own for an unplanned son. As she grew past toddler and child into her early teens it was clear Shale lacked the constitution to apprentice with any friends of the family and she ended up just helping out around the small family Inn, and running across the street to help out in her sister's pub when needed. Mostly, though, Shale ended up helping with her parents as they slowly grew more feeble year by year and helping with Fern's two girls once they were born. Unfortunately the near constant exposure to an ever aging and increasingly hostile pair of parents absolutely wrecked her self esteem under a constant torrent of verbal abuse.

For what it was worth, Shale was pretty sure her siblings tried to be kind to her. Comments made on her appearance and nature were made in attempt to toughen her up, and their words of encouragement just made her burn with humiliation. Shale lacked the spine to articulate why, exactly, she was so uncomfortable with the way the spoke of her and because of that they never stopped as she grew into a teenager and beyond.

If there was one relief brought by the passing of time, it was that the health of her parents eventually deteriorated far enough that the bite left their words. Her mother just glared silently most of the time, and more than once her father mistook her for her own mother – something both of her siblings assured her she would grow out of when she grew into a big and strong man like Ruby, her cousin, and their father.
The biggest problem with that was that Shale desperately wanted to be as little like her male relatives as possible. As much as Shale thought their mother a cruel woman she had been striking once, and the idea of looking so dainty and feminine made Shale's heart swell.

With some money she had saved up she bought a corset off a traveler and went out of her way to buy lighter and flowing clothes that made her gender ambiguous. Her family got defensive when customers called her a 'lass' or 'lady' but Shale privately delighted in the mistake, and she flirted coyly with traveling men when she got the chance. If her family didn't know then it wasn't a problem, now was it?

And that was how it went for a long time, until the weight of the fact that Shale was wasting her life in a place with nowhere to go really hit her. She was fourteen, her mother had just passed, and Shale realized so far as her family was concerned she was a waste of space. Another mouth to feed and one that merely provided low quality labor in exchange.

Shale spent most of her time tending her father then, and began to volunteer to do more work around the Pub rather than the Inn so she could talk freely with travelers. It was then that the idea to leave really grew into a decision. She could, couldn't she? Even if she was nothing like him her father had been a highwayman in his time and she decided she must have inherited his desire to roam. And what was more, she wasn't about to go and make the mistake of falling in love and having a child to keep her tied to one place. Shale found her father's old supplies and took it upon herself to tend to them for the first time in thirty years. It kept well, it only took another two years before she had enough gathered coin to finish all the repairs and buy a pokemon off a nearby breeder, with the help of her older sister's judgment.

And that was that. Shale tied up her hair and squared her shoulders before leaving to see the great wide world for herself.
RP Sample:
Shale donned her father's old armor for the hundredth time, tightening the leather to her smaller frame with practiced fingers before she gave herself a pat down to make sure everything fit the way it was supposed to. It was old, but Shale had spent months gently tending to it, replacing breaks in chain and switching cracked old leather out for new panels, tightening up the waist and arms where the armor had always hung loose off her frame when she was a kid. Shale turned around in front of the mirror, checking how her body looked in the mirror wearing armor before she nodded to herself. She'd miss the tight corset she could wear around the inn and Tavern, but that wasn't the sort of clothing a lady could wear on the road.

After a moment Shale sighed and turned to her bed to pick up the cloak she had sewn, and found a skiploom sitting neatly on the green spread of fabric. “Well don't you look just dashing,” Fern said. Shale turned to look at her, and found her elder sister leaned against the doorway with her arms folded across her broad chest. When she grinned it was with a smile missing four teeth and her voice whistled as she added, “you're finally gonna be a ladykiller. I'm so proud I could cry.”

“That's not why I'm leaving,” Shale said, unable to keep the weary contempt out of her gentle voice.

Fern shrugged. “Suit yourself.”
She strode in, her warmth lighting the room even before the sun had a chance to rise. She swept the cloak off the bed and swept it about Shale's shoulders before she pulled down the hood over Shale's brilliant eyes. “Even so, you look handsome. A real gentleman.” Shale bit her lip and flushed in embarrassment – or humiliation. But her sister took it to mean he was flustered be her 'complement' and she pulled him in close for a hug, resting her round chin on the top of her head as she did so.
“You know . . . you can always come back. Anytime, you can come back. You do good work here, better than my kids.”

“Thanks, Fern,” she said dully, knowing she couldn't return once she left.

Shale pressed her hands to her sister's biceps and pushed her away to arm's length, but didn't let go. “D-did you get it?”

Fern's face was briefly unreadable before she smirked. “Here you go,” she said as she set the ball in Shale's open palm then ruffled her bright red hair. “A perfect little guy for my dumb baby brother.”

“. . . Thanks . . ?”

“Trust me, hon.” Fern hugged Shale and kissed her forehead before she set a hand on her shoulder. “Now lets get you out of here before Ruby notices, hmm?” A hand nearly as big as Shale's shoulder rested on the back of her neck as her sister guided her out of the old Inn, and out into the light of a new day.

Weapon and Armour Choices: Wooden Staff and Leather Backed Mail
Intended Aptitudes: Inn/Tavern-keeping, observance/perception
(I'd like any fighting related aptitudes to be fairly low, Shale would probably start crying if she got into a brawl as it is)

Welcome to Harper! You've earned yourself 600g for your application. Here are your Pokemon choices:

http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/43oddish.png - Like Shale, an Oddish tends to be meek and quiet in nature. These pokemon are more of a nocturnal sort, who prefer to bury themselves in the soil during the day – similar to, of course, how Shale found comfort in the tavern where its busiest time would most likely be the night. These grass type Pokemon will shriek when pulled from the ground without warning, and this mimics the way Shale shies away from the gender-normative terms her family decides to use. Oddish are known to fool predators, and alike the way Shale portrays herself, it’s a natural connection to this Pokemon. Oddish are great Pokemon with the potential of two different growths: one evolution into Vileplume, a poisonous but powerful Pokemon, and the other into a Bellossom, a more fluid, versatile and apt one.

http://files.jcink.net/uploads/harperregion/sprites/x_and_y/Hawlucha.png - Of course, on the other side of the coin, a Hawlucha is everything that Shale isn’t. These fighting type Pokemon are ready to attack everything and anything that comes in its way – a trait that, obviously, the meek and gentle Shale doesn’t possess. Loud and often times violent, Hawlucha screams power and dominance, while Shale is more quiet and reserved. Hawlucha are ready for any brawl, and while Shale tends to avoid fighting, these Pokemon are ready for action. Shale’s more impressionable attitude clashes nicely against the Hawlucha sneakiness of this Pokemon’s flying-based attacks. Of course, opposite to the more growth potential Oddish, Hawlucha has no evolution, and is more stagnant and predicable with its growth, a similar structure to how Shale views herself and how she has to be “what others think” of her as.
