Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Overall Appearance:
Sarra is 5’7”. She is slight, but wiry. Her dark skin bears the occasional scar, lessons from pokemon she has underestimated in the past. The oldest, most enduring mark, a bite from her old zangoose, marks her left arm. Her large hands are calloused, and her nails are short. Her dark hair is tied in two thick plaits.

She has a plain face, sun-worn, with thick brows and a square jaw. Her features are not given to emoting with the exception of her eyes—dewy when overwhelmed, blazing when provoked. Even when smiling her mouth is often closed, but this is mostly to hide her misaligned teeth. She snorts when she laughs.

Her clothing is always practical: tunics, pants, and boots. She reinforces these with padding to protect her limbs. Fabric is meticulously scrubbed and any tears mended with careful stitching. Her boots, relatively new, are especially well-cared for, and though Sarra goes without adornments, she sometimes carries pretty stones and the like for good luck.
Distinguishing Features:
  • Years old zangoose bite on lower left arm
Overall Personality:
Sarra has spent her life helping her father manage his pokemon handling operation, and through it she has developed qualities ideal for the job. Chief among these are calmness, decisiveness, and intolerance of frivolity. She readily anticipates the needs of others and prides herself at getting things done efficiently. Unfortunately, this has made her less personable as a whole; in conversation, she prefers to quickly get to business and can become frustrated to the point of snappiness if she feels others are not taking matters seriously. She has much more patience for children and even more for pokemon. There are two exceptions: she is inexperienced with and completely unnerved by psychic and ghost-type pokemon, which she regards with a sort of horrified fascination.

A firm believer in honesty, she despises the deceitful and tends to hold people at arm’s length out of fear she will be betrayed. Those she has come to trust, however, will have a friend for life, and those who choose to hire her will have a dedicated employee. She takes her promises and duties extremely seriously.

Sarra has dedicated her life to pokemon handling. She has a healthy appreciation for their power and capacity to learn. Her experiences range from raising pokemon for farms and domestic work to raising pokemon for battle. She bases success on meeting specific objectives, such as strength, docility, aggression, obedience, and so on—not necessarily happiness, though she is well aware of its effect on performance. When encountering a setback during training, she analyzes the problem and aggressively attacks it. This is both a good and bad thing, as Sarra can work with even the most difficult, stubborn pokemon, but more sensitive pokemon can find her scrutiny unbearable.

She finds peace in work: if she is angry or upset, she drowns herself in it; if she is too sick for it, she is agitated; if she cannot find it, she becomes restless. The closest she gets to leisure is exercise or cleaning, or so she tells herself. In truth, she also enjoys the childhood pleasures of skipping stones and composing songs on grass whistles and climbing things for the hell of it, though she refuses to admit it and hasn’t allowed herself such indulgences for some time. She is also used to relinquishing most, if not all, of her funds to her father, so spending money on herself makes her feel uncomfortable.

Sarra’s primary goal is to refine her pokemon handling ability and through it, achieve financial security. Her reasons are twofold: she would like to track down her faithful zangoose, Crim, who her father stole and sold out of desperation, and she would also like to help ease her father’s financial woes. Though she loves her father dearly, Crim takes first priority.

On the matter of weaponry, Sara has always relied on her father or Crim for self-protection. She has a short metal rod that she uses against pokemon as a last resort, but she has never used it on humans.
History:
Sarra’s mother died in childbirth, and Sarra was an only child. Her father trained pokemon primarily for farms and domestic work. He enjoyed modest success and, looking to keep the business within the family, brought on Sarra to one day take ownership. Initially Sarra’s duties consisted of feeding and cleaning up after pokemon. As she took to her father’s tutelage and proved herself capable of more, she performed obedience training and eventually correction of problematic behaviors. Sarra’s keen observation of pokemon moods made her perfect for more difficult, unpredictable pokemon. One of her most challenging early cases was Crim, a zangoose ratter prone to biting his human handler. She not only corrected his behavior but befriended him. Sarra’s father would eventually purchase Crim for Sarra, and the two became inseparable.

Competitors would gradually snatch up work. Desperate, Sarra and her father visited a neighboring farm in an effort to win back an old client. The two were unsuccessful but invited to stay for the “scratchpits,” a sport where locals gathered to battle low-level pokemon and bet on the winners. Sarra competed with Crim and won some money for her victories. It was her first experience with the lucrative sport of pit battles. More than that, however, her father found a means to revitalize the business: Sarra would raise pokemon specifically for the pits and battle them, while her father secured new pokemon and handled her winnings. It was a bright, new chapter for the family business.

It was also the most difficult period of Sarra’s life. She was used to creating docile farm helpers, not fighters. Scratchpit fighting was quick, violent, and close quarters. It favored aggressive pokemon that flourished under pressure. She also had to develop these pokemon rapidly, as pit fights were often lethal. Though hesitant about her new responsibilities, Sarra folded to her father’s requests. A combination of experimenting and emulation would eventually allow her to churn out battlers with brutal efficiency. Crim was the one pokemon who escaped this fate. Sarra vowed to use him exclusively for self-protection, and she would never again use him for the pits.

As time went on, it became difficult to ignore her father’s suspicious activities. He met and argued with strange visitors at the house. He became desperate for her to win more battles and also to produce more fighters, many of which her father would take but never return for use in the pits. Sarra was also asked to surrender her meager savings. Gradually she pieced together the story through drunken confessions: her father was mired in debt. She chose to stand by him, accepting but not convinced of his claims that he would fix everything.

Disaster struck when the Guardians shut down the scratchpits. Though neither Sarra or her father were caught, their livelihood was ruined, and Sarra’s father remained hopelessly in debt. Apparently undeterred, he claimed to have found ratting work in the city. Sarra lent him Crim and awaited his return.

Days later, her father would return by cart, heavily intoxicated. He admitted to selling Crim. He did not know who he sold the pokemon to, only that he had used the abra network to do so. It was this final betrayal that caused Sarra to head out on her own and take matters into her own hands.
