Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

[Totodile Egg Count = 15]

The salandit's ember did little more to Baron than singe the tips of his fur before he landed his payback and Erland felt a surge of pride rise up within his chest as he sheathed his weapons. Even though the salandit hadn't been fainted like he believed it should have, the poochyena had still shown a flash of resilience, and the young Guardian looked forward to working with the dark-type more in the future. Unfortunately, it would have to wait due to the pokemon's current condition.

Erland returned him quickly after the battle was complete. Better that than chance the poison spreading and causing serious issues, which Baron knew, although the canine made no pains to hide the look of stubborn acceptance on his face. The kadabra, meanwhile, seemed to be awaiting further instructions from the young man, and to him it was... strange, though he suspected the kadabra was simply testing his mettle.

He knew that as many people as not would directly command their pokemon in battle, but Erland had a different take on the matter; in fact, he likened the role of a handler to a teacher or an instructor opposed to the former. If he had to coach his pokemon through every step of a battle, then he failed them. Better was it to teach them to be self-sufficient, and he was pleasantly surprised at Baron's willingness to be just that. Erland just hoped that Baron would listen if he had to.

When he saw that no reinforcements were coming from the boy nor the overextended watch, Erland had the kadabra search out for Toby. Baron would survive--the pokeball would make sure of that--but he knew at least that Sheila didn't have an antidote for him, and Toby had already told him earlier not to leave his side. Ironic, considering how the Senior left his almost as soon as there was trouble. Erland grinned wryly to himself. Despite understanding Toby's reasoning behind it, he still planned on giving his mentor a hard time about it later. First, they had to finish the business at hand.

Send a message to Toby for me, kadabra: "Baron's poisoned, but okay. We're on our way to you. Anything I should know?" If Toby had any instructions upon receiving the message, Erland would listen; otherwise, the pair of them would race to meet the stout Guardian mid-battle.

The kadabra's willingness to follow his orders gave him confidence in his decision-making as they came upon the scene. Provided that Toby didn't have any specific orders for him, Erland would jump into the battle without hesitation, instructing the kadabra to issue another psychic attack on one of the salandit that were aggressively circling the Guardian and his wigglytuff, effectively leaving only one opponent for her to worry about... but the rustling in the bushes went unheard by Erland until a poison sting shot out in an ambush.

"Behind you!" he shouted at the kadabra, reacting as best as he could to warn the psychic-type from the attack. He hoped that it was enough for him to use protect in time. Erland retrieved his weapons from their sheaths once more at the prospect of a fight on two fronts, readying himself for battle. He just wasn't willing to recall Baron in his current condition. No, he would fight if needed, and he was prepared to do just that... but he wasn't an idiot.

Whatever Toby was doing at this time, whether or not he had dispatched of the other two salandit by now, and whether or not he had any specific instructions for him, Erland was ready to answer the call. If, on the other hand, the Senior Guardian was too preoccupied, he would order the kadabra to issue psyshock into the brush where the attack had come from, hoping the physical, psychic energy would blast their assailant into the open where they could see it, if not faint it.

There was one thing that Erland couldn't deny even in the midst of a battle like they now were--he was certainly enjoying himself.

The kadabra nodded his head, searching out for his handler with his mind and seeking an answer to Erland's question. Considering that Baron was poisoned now, although he was still capable of battling, Erland might have to rely more on the kadabra to get past the apparent salandit swarm. It was a good idea to keep the pokemon informed, at the very least, about any ideas or upcoming plans.

Kadabra didn't seem to receive any orders from Toby through their mental link, but he was able to guide Erland over to the area where his senior partner fought against three salandits. Unnoticed at first, the kadabra was able to get an initial attack in, and a single salandit leaned over in exhaustion, only to faint when the wigglytuff completed an attack it had been preparing.

"Something ran in there, go get it! I've got this!" Toby cried out, gratitude on his face, but he seemed no less determined to take care of the salandits near him. It would be a challenge at first, but Wiggles would manage to get the attention of the two remaining salandits (the latter of whom was now joining the attack, albeit cautiously) with a dazzlingly bright flash of light. With a bit of help from the kadabra, Erland was soon on his way back towards the wooded area, where he would notice the Poison Sting attack almost too late.

Luckily, the kadabra had swift reflexes and clear battle training, and he managed to erect a quick barrier, and the needles fell harmlessly to the ground. When he tried to retaliate, the sound in the bushes would become louder, then softer - and then a rather injured-looking nidorina would slide out of the bushes.

Nidorina was capable of using Poison Sting, but this particular one looked to be in horrible shape, stumbling around and standing with her last energy. She eyed the kadabra, trying to keep her gaze steady, but there was a great deal of pain in her eyes, although specific wounds weren't easily discernible. There were no open gashes and no blood, but the nidorina looked like she had just come out of a terrible fight and was in desperate need of healing. Why had she attacked them, then - or was it her at all?

In this case, though, Erland had more than one way to figure out the situation. The nidorina didn't look like she could keep fighting for much longer; a single blow was likely to cause her to faint - but with the kadabra in tow, there was also the option of trying to figure out why there was another poison-type here who wasn't a salandit, and why she was so wounded. Whether by polite speech or simply forcing his way into her mind, the kadabra, as a pure psychic-type, was likely to at least be able to get some information. Then again, the shaking noise was getting farther away from Erland, and if he didn't pursue it to the best of his ability, he might lose track of it.

Was it worth it to try to plumb the mind of the injured nidorina, or would that only waste time that Erland or the kadabra - or both - could try to catch whatever fled the scene? The choice was up to Erland once more.

[Totodile Egg Count = 16; need to start figuring out how to introduce this guy sometime soon. Feel free to PM me, because he is not IC'ly in Erland's possession atm]

Ran in where? Erland thought, confused at Toby's command at first, although his answer came quickly when the poison sting shot from the bushes toward them. He reacted as best he could to give the kadabra some sort of instruction and, fortunately, it worked.

Relief overcame him as the poisonous needles fell to the ground without a home, which meant that Toby's kadabra was unharmed, and he was glad that the psychic was so well trained when he fired off a psyshock in retaliation. Just before he did so, Erland thought he heard another, more frantic sound coming from the rustling bushes, but he couldn't tell whether that was the kadabra's attack or something else entirely; it all happened so fast.

A nidorina was pushed out, then, obviously near fainting despite the lack of any visible injuries. It caught the young Guardian off-guard seeing her in such a bad state after preparing himself for another fight, but he kept his weapons in hand regardless. She seemed desperate, and he had enough common sense to know that a pokemon with its back pressed against a wall was both unpredictable and dangerous. He ushered the kadabra to probe the poison-type.

If you can, see what information you can find out, but be quick. Let her know that we are not here to hurt her, or her babies if she has any. It went without saying that they likely didn't have much time before she fainted.

Despite the lack of instruction, he hoped that the kadabra would be gentle with her, but he knew they had little time for pleasantries at the moment, both for her sake and for theirs. Regardless, it put a sour taste in his mouth that he was the one ordering such an intrusive act on an unwilling victim. He didn't like it... but it was their best shot.

The time that it took for the kadabra discover enough about the situation to effectively act and depending on what that information was would determine Erland's course of action. If the nidorina was compliant and the process went smoothly, he would follow the shaking sound with the disclosed information so long as it were still wise for him to do so. He was obviously limited in his ability to protect himself, besides the fact that Toby had ordered him not to dart off on his own on their journey to Silver Staravia. As young as he was, he still wasn't an idiot, nor was he going to knowingly chase after his own suicide. But.

If it were too late to chase after whatever it was that escaped, Erland would ask the kadabra to inform Toby, then aid him to dispatch the remaining salandit while the younger man tended to the Nidorina.

If they find out what they need in time

If they're too late

---

*If at any point in time the nidorina faints during the scenarios above, Erland will capture her and take her with him.

[[ +0.7 EXP for you! And I've sent you a PM about the totodile egg. ]]

The nidorina didn't seem strong enough to resist the kadabra, and even if she had wanted to, there was a certain catharsis in letting others know about her pain. She flopped to the ground, still conscious but it didn't seem like she'd be that way for long. She would listen to the kadabra's words, but rather than issuing a reply of her own, she would allow him into her mind, giving him a chance to see exactly what had befallen her.

There were two young ones, two little daughters who she thought the world of. Marigold and Zinnia were the treasures of her life, and they lay there wounded, the elder Marigold poisoned, the younger Zinnia slashed by a claw. She was too late, or at least she thought so, until she heard a wheezing cough from one of them. She couldn't tell who. She was too far away, and there was an enemy in-between her and her children.

Her blood boiled as her body filled with rage. Emotion surged through her veins and she lunged forward, trying to attack the strange salamander-like pokemon between her and her children, only to be held back by two others of the same species. One against three was not a battle she was capable of winning, not unless she found a dark stone that gleamed in the moonlight.

"We will let you have your children back," said the pokemon in front of the nidorina, clearly the leader of the small group of three enemies. The voice was high-pitched, letting the nidorina know that she addressed a female. The other two pokemon stayed silent, holding the nidorina back. "Just do us one small favor."

"What do you need?" the nidorina grunted.

"There is a treasure we seek here, but we will not go into town if it endangers our master. Find a sparkling blue orb and we will never trouble you again."

"And if I don't?"

"You wish for them to stay alive, yes? I will watch them with my comrades. If you bring us back this orb, we will go in peace. Otherwise, we will have no mercy."

"Why do you need this orb? What's so important that you would hurt others of your own type?"

A sharp pain as poison flowed from two points on her body, the two pokemon holding her taking no chances. "My master has antidotes for the children, and for you. But be quick about it - your death will not excuse them."

The vision became fuzzier. There was a great focus on a blue orb, or at least what she assumed it to look like. The poison was fast-acting, and she soon found herself trying to leave the forest, trying to do what was right and find her way to the town. Her vision became hazier until she looked up at a kadabra -

And the kadabra exited her mind with a subtle gesture, turning to face Erland and give as much information as possible.

Through the ensuing vision, Erland would find out that the salandits had a leader, who might be usable to take them out. Then again, the leader seemed answerable to someone as well, the "master" who wanted the blue orb but didn't want the salandits to enter town. Clearly, something had gone wrong with this plan, as there were definitely salandits in town. Erland hadn't encountered the female one yet, but there had been more than two males, meaning that there were more to the situation than the nidorina knew.

Erland was now faced with a choice: did it make sense to take the detour and try to save the nidorina's babies, hoping to find the female salandit in the forest where she had apparently been recently, or was it more important to stop the "master" from achieving his goal in the town? Or was splitting up a viable option - or was there a way to do both?

Either way, Erland would soon find himself in possession of a nidorina. The final exertion of letting the kadabra in had sapped the remainder of her energy, and she looked to be in dire shape. As long as she stayed in a poke ball, she would be held in stasis and wouldn't die, but she would need some in-depth healing soon if she was to have any hope of recovery.

Poke ball containing the injured nidorina has been added to Erland's inventory!

[Totodile Egg Count = 17]

The nidorina's memory left Erland with a mixed bag of emotions, the foremost among them being a strong sense of empathy. Not having any children of his own, the young man could still imagine what it would be like to lose them, and it left his stomach in knots just thinking about what happened to them. They had to act fast.

"Kadabra! Calm your mind and use your psychic abilities to try to locate that salandit, the female one that injured nidorina. They might yet be close enough that we can catch them before they get away."

Erland was silent as the kadabra became quiet with concentration searching for the female salandit with his mind's eye, but he noticed that the nidorina had fallen unconscious. He took the moment to capture the poison-type, unwilling to leave her to die, which he was sure she would if she didn't get help soon. At least the pokeball will keep her alive.

The younger Guardian hoped that the tactic would work. Poison-type creatures were especially sensitive to psychic-type manuevers, so he was sure that the idea wasn't completely off-base... but that would surely depend on how far the pokemon had gotten, and if the kadabra were a high enough level to reach them. If it did, they'd go after the salandit immediately hoping to catch them before they got away. But if it didn't, Erland would respond to the fox-like pokemon.

"Send another message to Toby. Fill him in, then ask him what he wants us to do." The young Guardian looked up after securing the nidorina in a pokeball and found that dusk was upon them. "It'll be dark within the hour. If we're going to give chase, now is the time, but we need to act fast, and we need to stick together. If Nidorina's memory serves as any indication, we're up against more than just a rabid group of wild pokemon, and we're in their terrority."

[[ +0.6 EXP for you! ]]

The kadabra, curious to see how Erland would respond to the nidorina's distressing experience, understood his impulse to check on the baby nidorans. With the nidorina safely in a poke ball, there was no one left to stand up for them, or at least no one that Erland knew about. He nodded when he received his orders, then closed his eyes and sent the information to Toby.

"He is unable to respond now. He is in a battle. I can summon him if necessary, but his last order was to find what was in the forest." That was slightly concerning to hear... was Toby having trouble with the two salandits that still remained, or was there another foe besieging the town, possibly the mysterious "master?" Either way, Toby hadn't sent word to come back, so Erland was free to enter the forest.

The path would be surprisingly well laid-out; all he needed to do was follow the squished foliage from the nidoqueen dragging herself along the ground. The marks would show clear dedication from the pokemon, and a journey that seemed quite far for one so injured; no doubt the nidorina would not have survived much longer without Erland's poke ball.

It wouldn't take long for Erland to hear some whimpering in the distance - soft, but audible. If he followed the noise, he would see what looked like a bluish blob on the ground that would be distinguishable from closer up as two young nidorans. Unable to handle damage like their mother, and unable to move from their spot, it was all they could do to huddle together. The noise would also be distinguishable between the two pokemon as Erland got closer; the nidoran with the gash was whimpering loudly, whereas the one who looked poisoned, like her mother, was coughing out small wheezy breaths. Nestled between the two pokemon was a small egg, something he hadn't learned about from the nidorina. What was the egg doing there? Another baby nidoran, or something else planted there?

Erland would have only a few scant moments to observe the nidoran babies before he would hear a small popping noise behind him. The kadabra was gone, but before he could have a chance to react to this, a voice would ring out in the clearing.

"Lost, are we?"

Erland wouldn't be able to see the speaker, nor would he hear any footsteps. Did this mean a psychic was interfering, or was there an actual person there, albeit one who was very proficient with stealth? The voice didn't sound particularly masculine or feminine, nor did it sound angry. It sounded quite in control, and almost as if it was enjoying that fact.

Whoever it was wouldn't take silence for an answer, and would soon speak again: "I assume you want these little ones alive, and that could be arranged, for the right price."

A great silence would fill Erland's ears after the speaker finished, followed by a sudden interjection from the kadabra.
"I am still here... what is your order?"

Whether he was invisible nearby, or had teleported somewhere else, it seemed that Erland was not without allies. But he did have a nameless, shapeless enemy in the clearing, and not much time to react. What was the best option? Was there a way to save the babies, or himself? Could he bring more allies in? The kadabra was a surprise to the speaker for now, but once he took an action, the speaker would be able to figure out the psychic's involvement... unless he was otherwise distracted.

With a myriad of options in front of him, as well as the potential to find out answers to some of his questions, what would Erland do? And whose safety was he most willing to risk - the kadabra, himself, or the babies? Or was there a way to keep everyone safe? Erland's upcoming condition and knowledge would depend on his priorities.

Totodile Egg Count = 19 (18+1 for Magma Armor ring). Next post!

Erland nodded his acquiescence at the kadabra's news. He had a bad feeling about the entire situation. Not only was dark descending upon them quickly, but his orders were to continue further into the forest after some unknown 'master' with practically nothing but his Senior's kadabra in tow while said Senior was in the midst of a battle of his own. He shook his head. He might've felt slightly more at ease if Baron were in better shape or if he had another pokemon to aid him in case things went south, but he wasn't sure he was ready for this. Still. Orders were orders whether they contradicted Toby's earlier statement not to leave his side for any reason or not. He would surely have some words for the man later if he survived.

"Then let's go."

Despite the dusklit atmosphere, it was surprisingly easy to follow the path--or, at least, a path--back in the direction where the nidorina had come from, and he hoped upon hope that her daughters were at the other end of it. Any number of things could have happened between now and then: they could have been adbucted by the salandit, they could have been attacked by another wild pokemon or, worse yet, it was even possible for the little ones to have died before he even got there, alone and suffering until their life gave out. He ushered a silent prayer to Arceus that he would find them before any of that happened.

Fate seemed to smile on them this night as it wasn't long before the answer to his prayers came forth in the form of a gentle whimper and a cough, faint, but audible. Erland breathed a deep sigh of relief as he ran towards the sound, retrieving his last two, regular pokeballs to use immediately upon seeing the infant pokemon. It was the same precaution that he had taken with their mother and, likewise, the stasis would keep them alive until they all got out of this mess and Erland could get them the treatment that they needed. They just had to make it out alive.

Admittedly, the egg caught him by surprise, but it didn't hinder the young Guardian as he knelt beside the nidorans and touched them with the pokeballs. He had just finished capturing the nidorina's children when the kadabra disappeared.

"Lost, are we?"

He stiffened where he knelt by the egg. All of his hair stood at attention in a way that reminded him of new recruits in the training yard, and he was oddly aware that he had absolutely zero idea where the voice came from, much less if it were a man or a woman. He jumped up into an athletic position with the egg cupped between the crease of his left elbow and his armpit as he swung himself around in every direction trying to locate his stalker. He swore under his breath when he found nothing.

"I assume you want these little ones alive, and that could be arranged, for the right price."

The silence that followed was... disturbing. It felt hollow and made his head feel somewhat empty, possibly as if a presence had left, but he could neither determine whether that meant the voice was communicating with him psychically any more than if it was the kadabra's doing. It was just too tough to tell.

I am still here... what is your order?

Use calm mind. Don't reveal yourself yet, but be ready in case something attacks. Just tell me which direction I need to run in if things go south.

Knowing that the kadabra was nearby, even if he was unseen, gave him a sense of security in spite of the situation he found himself in. In the meantime, he figured his best bet was to play the speaker's game.

"I'm listening," Erland half-shouted, unsure of how loud he needed to be in order for the speaker to hear him. He would give them the opportunity to talk and do his best to goad as much information out of them as he could before anything happened and, with any luck, he'd be able to walk out of the forest without another fight... hopefully. Regardless, with the babies safely in his possession and with the kadabra at least within range (if only out of sight), he was strangely confident that he could escape if needed. The only problem now was the egg, which... wait.

Did it just shake?

[[ +0.6 EXP for you! Unfortunately, you will have to wait until my next post for the egg to hatch, as 19 is too early for an egg of that rarity to hatch. Also, I'll be able to put your totodile in your profile once it hatches in my next post, but I do want to remind you that you will only be able to choose one of those things, randomized when the egg is hatched. Since there are only 2 abilities, you'll get those by default, and I will roll to see if you get to choose the gender or the egg moves. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions! ]]

Erland was able to use his last two poke balls on the nidorans, although the egg in his arms that was beginning to shake would need a ball as well, or the newborn would be at risk of getting hurt or running away. Just as he was about to stand up, however, the mysterious voice spoke for the first time.

How long had the speaker been watching him? What did the speaker know of him? And, more disturbingly, why had the speaker allowed him to capture the two young nidorans?

The voice made no comment as Erland jumped to his feet, clutching the egg fervently as the speaker relished Erland's fear, keeping their silence until the moment was right. The next words were strange, considering the nidorans were in poke balls, but perhaps this was not the way the speaker had intended for things to go - and the next words made that abundantly clear.

"You have stolen two pokemon of mine. I do not abide theft. I have half a mind to dispose of you here, young Guardian, and be done with it." A long silence would follow these words, enough to make Erland wonder if the speaker had decided to do that after all.

"And yet, I find myself in a merciful mood. I will let you and your companions go unscathed, and take the two brats with you, if you do me one small favor. Find the shimmering blue orb in town and bring it directly to me. I will know if you don't, and there will be no place where you will be able to run from me."

The orb again... what was this orb? And why was it so important that it had apparently saved Erland's life, in the moment?

"Go to the village now. I will accept no failure." These were the last words Erland would hear from the mysterious voice. The forested area was soon quiet once more, without even the whispers of wild pokemon or a breeze blowing through the leaves.

Erland had been on one mission - to help the town - and now, he was on two. He had no idea what he was up against, and he still needed to return to Toby in the village, which was theoretically in the speaker's range. How was he supposed to do what needed to be done and still serve as a Guardian? The speaker certainly didn't seem like a Guardian, working from the shadows and using injured pokemon to get what they wanted.

Then again, Erland had heard of the orb before, from the nidorina's memories. The salandits had been tasked with bringing it back, and yet, the speaker was asking him now. Did this mean the speaker was running out of options? A desperate person was likelier to make a mistake, or perhaps less likely to pose as much of a threat. But was it worth it to try to work with this assumption, considering Baron's poisoning and the wiggling of the egg in his arms, slowly getting faster?

The decision was Erland's.
