Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Overall Appearance:
Lachlan has thick brown hair past his shoulders, usually pulled back in a braid or knotted at the base of his skull when working. When he's relaxing he prefers it down, often hanging in his eyes or splayed over his throat. Rich mahogany hair spills down in perfectly straight lines. Even wet hair tied into a tight braid and bound until it dries won't hold a curl. At 5'11" he's no giant but nor is he undersized. In general Lachlan is an average man. His shoulders are broad and his hips slender but beneath the heavy folds of fabric and armor he's well muscled. Working in his mother's smithy for years has left Lachlan's body nicely shaped for stamina and heavy-lifting.

His eyes are a breathtaking combination of his mother and father's gazes. His mother's vivid chestnut coloring is overlaid with his father's deep cerulean. Up close Lachlan's eyes are swirled with blue and his left eye has a splotch of dark brown breaking the pattern. It's distinctive only in direct light and up close, otherwise his hazel eyes appear perfectly ordinary. Sharp eyebrows balance sharp cheekbones, causing Lachlan's face to look quite angular. His square chin is a gift of his father, which is usually kept pretty decently shaved. The itch of beard on his face is quite annoying, to be frank.

Plain clothes and unadorned fabric are Lachlan's preferred choice. He wears no jewelry as they're a hassle--and he has a habit of misplacing small objects. He doesn't mind bright colors on the cloth but mostly wears darker colors, black and slate gray and the occasional russet. Anything least likely to retain stains or burn marks. While his trousers are often on the loose side around the ankles and calves they're always bound tight around the hips and his tunics are always just loose enough to permit free movement and no more. Billowing sleeves are dangerous in a forge and heavy, constricting vests risk fainting. While he works sleeveless or bare-chested Lachlan would rather have long sleeves out of doors. His loathing of the cold and the whipping wind knows no bounds.

Shoes are always worn in the form of heavy leather boots. He hates to go barefoot and makes sure to sleep with at least one pair of woolen socks rolled up high as they go. Cloaks are a must anytime after August or before June. As far as men go Lachlan is a reasonably handsome guy. He's no beautifully sculpted creation but in a tavern he's noticed as often as not. His looks are a few subtle steps above plain and unassuming but rarely memorable enough for a lasting first impression.
Distinguishing Features:
  • Calloused hands and a few pale white scars across his palms
  • One particularly noticeable scar on his right forearm where he caught a white-hot steel rod instead of letting it fall to the ground
Overall Personality:
Lachlan is a very determined individual. He's passionate and strong-willed--nothing changes his mind once he's made it up. Lachlan isn't incapable of social activity but he has very little experience doing so. When his focus narrows down to a single task nothing else outside of that task registers. He'll work for hours without sitting, eating or running to the bathroom until his work is complete and only notices discomfort after the fact. He might ignore someone trying to start up a conversation or respond curtly when his attention is elsewhere with little realization of how rude he acted. He's also terrible at lying. He's horrible at coming up with clever lies on the spot and those tend to be outlandish.

While Lachlan isn't particularly chatty around people he's moderately friendly. He can be a bit awkward at first but once he gets to talking about the things he loves there's no stopping him. He's not the most adaptable of people. Most of his life was spent stagnant. Nothing changing, nothing exciting around the corner. When pushed Lachlan pushes back, often with all his strength. Even if he knows it's the best option or the right thing to do he reels against anything forced upon him. More often than not he regrets his bullheadedness after the fact but he never manages to rid himself of his bad habit. When he makes mistakes - a frequent occurrence over the years - he works hard to learn to do things properly. He might not be the smartest or the most clever, or even the strongest man out there but he always pushes himself beyond his own limitations to succeed. He never settles for mediocre if he believes he can do more or become someone better.

He has zero experience with pokemon. Lachlan is self-conscious of this. He never even owned a cat or a fish, much less a pokemon with their higher level of intelligence and abilities. To throw away everything he knows in life and begin fresh? To risk everything and jump headfirst into the unknown? Nothing is more terrifying--or exhilarating. Lachlan worries about how well he'll do and fears he will fail before he's even begun. Having little understanding of the world outside his hometown, he's worried he won't measure up to snuff and will have to go back home a failure. But for all that he worries and fears the future, he's determined to see it through to the end no matter the consequences. And for that matter nothing rivals the thrill of leaving home with no more than what's tucked over his shoulder.

Since first seeing a true pokemon battle, Lachlan has become enraptured by pokemon. He's visited neighbors with working pokemon and studied every book he could get his hands on. But nothing compares to firsthand experience. He has heard of steadfast loyalty and the deep bonds between pokemon and their trainers. He envies this and hopes to one day have his own team of beloved pokemon. Other than his parents Lachlan has never cared about another living thing beyond a fundamental empathy toward strangers. He has never been a people person. But he dreams of adventure, of growing into his own and becoming someone different. Someone who seeks out happiness and holds it tight.

Lachlan has been and forever will be a morning person even when he is so tired his head feels too heavy to lift off the pillow. As soon as dawn cracks over the horizon he's up and out of bed. Luckily for him, Lachlan can fall asleep anywhere in any manner of discomfort. He spent many a night asleep on the floor of the smithy or curled up around one of the bellows as a pillow until his mom carried him up to bed. He's also very difficult to rile once asleep. Loud noises and the oppressive heat don't bother Lachlan whatsoever. A loudred could screech into his ear and he'd merely turn to look at the pokemon and ask what's wrong. He's particularly susceptible to cold, however. He can't stand to be cold and often burns a big fire when he sleeps outdoors even at the height of summer.

One thing he dislikes above all else is the sensation of being trapped. One of his running nightmares since childhood was about falling into quicksand and never making it out alive, choked by sand and all sensation lost but the horrible feeling of being entombed. Thanks to growing up on top of a cliff, Lachlan has never feared heights. One of his biggest guilty pleasures is his love of sweets in any form. He especially loves strawberries and cream.
History:
Lachlan was born in Fough on the dusty floor of a smithy. His mother, Gretchen Marie, had refused to abandon her work midway through simply because her water broke. What sort of blacksmith would I be to let all this fine material go to waste? Gretchen retold the tale over the years and laughed deep in her belly at the memory, tossing back her head. Lachlan never questioned her choice. His mother was a stalwart woman with a fierce bark and a no-nonsense way about her. Neither sickness nor bad weather would keep her from her work. Lachlan loved his mother with all his heart. She was his idol, his mentor. She taught him everything she knew of iron and fire from the time he could hold a pair of tongs.

Lachlan's father was a timid man in comparison. Well mannered, quiet and gentle. Never had a harsh word left Augustine's Manitou's mouth, even when he was teased after his wife refused to take his name. They never quarreled such as arguments went. Gretchen would holler and complain about expensive material and Augustine would nod sympathetically and go right back to what he was doing. Lachlan couldn't have been raised in a better place in his opinion.

He knew more about fire than most kids knew the rules to psyduck, psyduck, golduck. There was a danger in working with flame and yet such beauty as well. He spent most nights beside his mother, feeding the flames and hauling buckets of water for the cooling processes. From manual labor to watching with wide eyes as his mother hand-crafted whole sets of chain-mail without so much as missing a beat, Lachlan's entire life revolved around the forge. He didn't spend afternoons outside with friends - he rarely spoke to anyone in general - and he certainly didn't go off causing trouble or learning to pickpocket in the streets.

No, his family had an honorable trade and a stable living situation. They weren't exorbitantly rich or famous, his mother wasn't the greatest blacksmith to ever live. But she was well-known and she sold many high quality pieces. They had a quaint home up there on the cliffs and they were happy. Growing up in a small house with an attached smithy, Lachlan spent many hours at the anvil. So too did he sneak off into the yard or alleyway to practice with the various weapons his mother crafted. From throwing daggers to two-handed swords, Lachlan attempted them all. He wasn't exactly skilled or well-taught but he could certainly hit a target with a dagger from twenty meters dead center. He might even ward off a thief or a soldier in a fight if he got lucky.

Many people might have thought less of the hard life of a smithy's son and dreamed of better things. Lachlan wasn't like that. He loved what his family did, the pride his mother took in every sword and every horseshoe she sold. Sure, the labor hurt. He went to bed more than once aching from strain or bandaged from an accident in the smithy. Even so, for the first nineteen years of his life Lachlan was happy. He felt no compunction to move outside of his little world or see what life had to offer. It wasn't until the day three guardians tracked a pokemon poacher right up to their door and hashed it out in the street.

Pokemon were everywhere. Lachlan had seen plenty in his years from afar and quite a few who entered the shop with their handlers. But they held no fascination for him. Cute, sure. Strange looking in some cases? Definitely. And then there was that ghastly thing which gave Lachlan the heebie jeebies when he was twelve. But they were commonplace. Nothing special. He found no interest in them at all until he watched a battle up-close and personal.

Lachlan never knew the names of the Guardians who chased the poacher down nor the man who was subsequently arrested afterward. He was too enraptured by the scene to think at all. It spilled out before him in a flash of color and lightning. The poacher had a golden pokemon, something Lachlan hadn't recognized at the time. A pikachu, he knew now, which the thief tossed out after being cornered between Marie's Smithy storefront and the three Guardians. Lightning rippled around the small creature and the deafening crack which followed left Lachlan's ears ringing painfully. One guardian stepped forward and sent his own pokemon out.

Clever of him to use rhyhorn. All Lachlan knew at the time was his life might be in danger if the poacher grew desperate and he'd never seen so much raw power contained in so small a beast. The fight escalated quickly, drawing a crowd in a lopsided half-oval. The rhyhorn charged and spun, unable to pin down the pikachu in close quarters. But he drew every shock the little creature spit out and prevented unaccountable injuries. Lachlan stood frozen, hanging on the battle as though he clung to the cliff face he lived atop his entire life. The poacher was cornered, outnumbered and outclassed. But still he fought and called out attacks. Finally in a stroke of luck the rhyhorn used a fury attack and knocked the pikachu hard against the side of a building, leaving it crumpled where it lay.

Lachlan's chest clenched at the sight but his attention was torn from the injured pikachu to the Guardians. They descended upon the poacher, all three spread out to give him little room to run. One drew a short sword, the other two bare-handed. The poacher himself had little in the way of weapons and as they fought, fists and kicks tossed at one another, the poacher fell. The unarmed Guardians were on him. They tied him up and lurched him to his feet, dazed as he was from a slam to the cranium.

The onlookers dispersed as the fight dwindled to its demise but Lachlan stood enthralled. He'd never seen such a display! So much power, so much danger. And the pokemon! Incredible. How two little creatures could wreak such havoc...it blew Lachlan away. When he regaled the scene to his parents that night, all but bouncing in his seat, he was met with a polite nod from his father and a complaint that the fight interrupted his mother's work. She had to scrap an entire length of steel after the first lightning strike. Lachlan's face fell and he grew silent, food untouched.

As the days passed and the weather grew worse Lachlan grew despondent. He worked as hard as ever in the forges but he was listless. The light, the passion of the task at hand bled to gray in the dazzling memory of the battle. He found himself laying in bed at night, staring at his ceiling. Pokemon bloomed across the blackness above his head, rearing and baying. They fought and flew and swam through all sorts of dangers. He'd picked up some books with his allowance, usually reserved for shiny new tools or a candy or two. He stared at exquisite drawings of various pokemon as well as hand-doodled accounts of Guardians of the past.

Lachlan found his life lacking. He'd lost sight of the small pond he'd existed in his whole life in the wake of the massive sea of knowledge and adventure he'd never known. He spent two more years going through the motions, assisting his mother in the forges. A month before his twenty-second birthday Lachlan finally mustered up the courage to talk to his father. He waited until his mother left the breakfast table and out the side door, waited until his father had finished washing up and was halfway through cleaning the counters. "Father?" His voice cracked as it hadn't since he was thirteen. He swallowed dry and tried again.

"Father, there's something I want to ask you." Augustine looked up and his bespeckled gaze met Lachlan's. "Yes?" He was a man of few words, Augustine. But his warm smile boosted Lachlan's confidence. "I think--I think it's time I left home for a while." He let the words hang in the air for a few moments. His father said nothing, and in a burst of jabber mouth Lachlan let spill all the things he'd been dreaming about for the past two years. Traveling the world, meeting new people. Finding a place for himself, one which wasn't dependent solely on his mother's commands.

When Lachlan's words ran dry he licked his chapped lips. Augustine moved. He meandered around the table and took a seat, then folded his hands on the wood before him. "Yes, I do believe it's time. I was afraid you'd never ask." Then he smiled and it lit up his face like a beacon. It was the warm, loving smile Gretchen fell in love with when she was a fierce eighteen-year-old girl determined to be the greatest blacksmith in the world. It was the expression of complete trust and devotion.

And if Lachlan cried as he embraced his father, Augustine never spoke of it. "I'll gather the things you'll need. But you best tell your mother first." Now that was a dangerous undertaking in itself.
