Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Magicians' Guild Divided, Church Rallies

The eve of the Grand Festival was one of darkness and brilliant firelight, revelry and romance, old friends and new companions alike. For most, the celebration was as heady and cheerful an event as they were likely to see all year, and even the mages had brought special wares in their great tent to share. Folk were hesitant, but strong drink and stronger emotions and the familiar weight of the pokecards around their necks and pokeballs at their belts or in their purses reassured them and drew them in for their trinkets and for a time all was well.

Things have changed, and the region is in turmoil.

Months after the festivities, handlers had begun to use their tokens, releasing their strange powers purported to work to their advantage -- but it was not so. Some, certainly, fulfilled their promise purpose. Others, better still, granting strengths or benefits far beyond what had been described. Most did nothing of the kind. Items to draw pokemon without the troublesome censers and threat of damped incense that could not be easily lit summoned, not handfuls, but hordes, or else the summoned pokemon came in fits of aggression as though wildly rabid. Illusions refused to fade, taking hold instead and transforming their wearer into were beasts, twisted and grotesque half-pokemon doomed to die within the week or run and hunt the routes like mindless, mad things. Charms for speedy travel left bits of the wielder behind. Eggs were cooked in their shell, then exploded in showers of molten yolk that burned and scarred faces and hands both. Extreme, localised bouts of weather wrought havoc on local environments -- devastating floods in the desert, tsunamis on dry land, volcanic activity in calm meadows, all contained eerily in fifty-foot radiuses. Pox and plague and strange, poisonous diseases that no healer could cure in people and pokemon alike... The list seemed endless.

At first, these incidents were sudden, isolated. They were the source of tavern talk and unrest, but not part of a pattern. Then, survivors began to emerge. Tales poured in from around the region. The Guardians run, now, night and day in endless striving to maintain order as folk riot and threaten neighbor and friend alike of not only witchery but the hoarding and use of these devil's artifacts. The church stands strong behind them, and growing support from the common, criminal, and noble factions alike has begun early and as yet disorganized witch hunts that reminisce of the hundred years' war of the region's past. No mage, no healer, no hedgewitch or charmwoman or petty fortuneteller feels safe outside the solid walls of the official pokemon centers. The Church of Arceus stretches to greater dominance, promising shelter and defense to the common man against these great evils, defending against magicians' work with holy relic and lore and prayer, while Balicans and Somnists keep their heads down. The hitherto minor religion of the Darkonians has surged in popularity and established a steady foothold in the region as people take sides -- some with the age old Mage Guild, seeking perceptions of knowledge and power and a place in what will emerge from the tumult.

The Order of the Masque, too, is at a loss. This was not their doing and their lives, never exactly founts of safety and virtue, have become more treacherous by far. Trick Lords and Ladies shelter their people where they can -- if they care -- but as crops fail and the criminal and beggarly population has begun to swell, smaller organizations of banditry and bastardy crop up beneath the organization and challenge the Order's chaotic reign by the very existence of their gangs. Underworld leaders find themselves putting down competition at every turn. The only good to come of this is that the Guardians have far too much on their mind to combat the growing gangs -- but that too comes with a grain of salt.

The People look with hatred upon the mages.

But the most significant damage lies not in the hands of the Church, nor in the shadows of Order alleyways, but within the Mages' Guild itself. Not since MY 250 has the ancient Guild altered in shape or basic form, but now the healers have striven to cleave themselves away from their ancestral kin. There has been too much evil, too much meddling in things that should not be, they say. Life is too sacred to destroy and dissect, they say. They know that the wave of plague pokemon a scant four years ago came at their hands, they know the twisted experiments that never made it to the light of day, they know of the dangerous treasures steeped in Old Magic torn from the Pennant ruins against their urgings, they know the way children of magical aptitude are stolen from homes and beds and cradles and driven into the fold, and they know that this is their fault.

The Healers have bound themselves together, from the powerful 'white mages' who hammer out their new charter to the meager physikers useful only for a mottled bruise. But the people still fear them, draw back in terror or rage or in hatred from these. Superstition has been replaced by prejudice and discrimination that fuels mobbings, stonings, lynchings in the night, while their townsfolk simply look the other way. Curiously, the newborn Healing Circle is aided and supported most strongly by the Order, and the Order alone, apparently so keen for a stake in the re-balancing of power that they would gamble on the healers' protective magics and recovery skills against the might of the other 'breeds' of mage. They are not excepted from the Church's hunts, nor from the common people's wrath, though sometimes spared by the Guardsmen with the levelest heads, for if it barks like a houndour and it walks like a houndour and burns like a houndour... so the saying goes. This does not dissuade these brave folk from their defiance of the Guild, but makes the schism ever more dangerous. They cannot, however, simply let things go. They cannot be a part of the madness. Around the traded world, mages have limits, have laws, have ethical limitations where they are sanctioned, but not here.

They all agree that it has gone too far.

The unrest in the region, building, building over the past years, has begun to boil over and threatens to bring a dark era to the country's history, sweeping through the region faster than any change before with the help of the printing presses that produce hundreds of holy texts, hundreds of pages of woodcut depicted propaganda so that even those without their letters may see and know the tale. Criers compete on corners for passerby attention, and the Mage Guild has begun to strike back suddenly and effectively against the Healing Circle with fire and poison heedless of civilian injury.

Will the Guardians and their Lords regain control of the region? Will the land fall into the hands of the Order among the chaos, or will the Order fall beneath the onslaught of competition at long last? Can the older Lords, Ladies and Councilpeople survive the raging sickness and deadly magicians' duels? And with little protection left on the roads and city streets, where will the common handlers find their safety with werebeasts and worse running free?

The First Great Schism has begun.

THE FACTIONS
_______________________________________________

In a conflict that encompasses an entire nation of people, there are always countless sides. However, four major factions have formed as the issue comes to a head. Who will have your support? What enemies will you make in the process?
_______________________________________________

The Church of Arceus
Honor. Community. Order.

The Arcean Church has held a healthy distrust of magic since its inception, notwithstanding its violent history against magic users. The Hundred Year Crusades are centuries behind the Harper Region now, but with the Mage Guild’s trinkets wreaking havoc across all corners of Harper, old grudges and worries have resurfaced. Here is the real, ugly, undeniable truth of the terror magic can bring, and the Church wishes to see this evil purged. With a hefty bank of gold, technologies, and artifacts at their back, and with the Guard as their major ally, they definitely compose of the wealthiest and the best outfitted Faction available.

To the Guard’s credit, they have been the frontline fighters in this conflict. Many have seen firsthand the awful effects the mage’s trinkets have had on the general populace. The community is suffering—dying, literally—and the Guardians are struggling just to stay on top of the chaos. Their goals in eradicating this disorder has most closely lined up with the Church, and this is why they have formed a vague alliance. However, the nobles and the councilpeople of the Guard haven’t all been able to maintain their objectivity, so each patron has a differing view on this issue, which may or may not trickle down to the Guardians under them.

Patrons and their stances

QUOTE (The Church)
Major Ally: The Guard
IC Incentives: Guard contacts; favor with Guardians means you can circumvent their checkpoints, they will come to your aide when summoned, and Guardians may overlook your illegal activity; free shelter and food at all Arcean Churches

The Mage Guild
Knowledge. Power. Innovation.

Since their connection to the Order of the Masque was established centuries ago, the Mage Guild has enjoyed isolation and protection in the impassable Shattersky Range, which has allowed them to work while circumventing government eyes. Harper Region owes much to the Mage Guild; our pokecards and affordable pokeballs and impressive elemental gear are all thanks to the mage’s strives toward innovation for innovation’s sake. The Mage Guild stands for testing the limits of magic, nature, pokemon, and people, at whatever cost that might be.

But they have gone too far. Now, the healers, their one division that was accepted by the public, are trying to form their own coalition unassociated with the main Guild. This has left them with an enormous schism in their ranks and with even fewer allies to support them. They are scrambling to protect their power, their secrets, and, most importantly, their own people, who are experiencing wholesale discrimination at the hands of the Church. They have a great wealth of magic gifts to those willing to side with them and undertake all the risks of such an alliance.

Harper’s Passion Guild
Objectivity. Progress. Independence.

Harper’s Passion has stagnated over the years, comparatively. Sure, they are an ever-present force in all the major cities, but most handlers do not really feel their influence. Much of this has to do with Guild Master Sheppit’s reluctance to leave the safety of his Seaway home. As this conflict has done with many people, Lawrence Sheppit has been forced to step up or watch his Guild fall to the hands of gangs, rogues, and others making grabs at power. Sheppit has opened up Harper’s Passion as a paragon of neutrality.

The handler’s guild extends its resources to those in need of help whilst avoiding stepping too far toward any one extreme. Sheppit’s stance appeals to a good number of handlers, from those who distrust magic but do not agree with such radical discrimination, to those who have enjoyed magic innovations but dislike the Mage Guild’s unchecked power. There is a price for fence-sitting, however; those on either end of the conflict will remember your impassiveness toward their struggles. You may make no enemies, but neither will you find any friends.

The Healing Circle
Health. Evolution. Peace.

As the underdogs in this conflict, the Healing Circle faces antagonism from nearly every faction involved. Others don’t differentiate between the Mage Guild and the Healing Circle—all mages are threats, no matter their purpose or affiliation. The Healing Circle has a vision to create a charter of “white mages,” one that has a self-imposed code of ethics to avoid the kind of unrestricted magic that the Mage Guild practices.

The Order’s growth has closely paralleled the Mage Guild’s since the Harper first joined forces with Queen Candance. They have been entwined throughout history. Nonetheless, when it comes to this chaos…the Order is cutting their losses. They have found potential in the burgeoning Healing Circle and have extended their resources toward seeing their success. The Order’s protection is absolutely priceless to the Healing Circle, but the alliance has also repelled some otherwise good people from helping them because of the Order’s longstanding, negative reputation.

How This Works
_______________________________________________

Ultimately, this is a heavily freeformed event. Your first step is to consider each faction and choose one for your character(s). Here is where you can cast your faction vote, if you’d like, and it is also where you can keep track of your posts and completed freeforms. Treat this like an event-specific PCR—use it to maintain your progress in your chosen faction and help the staff see what tier you’ve reached at a glance.

This event is not unlike Collaborative Freeforms, at least in that there will be a large mission pool for you to pick from, separated by faction. There are no limitations or restrictions on these event freeforms. Any character of any level or class may take these quests. They can be taken solo or in a group. For plotting purposes or for locating RP partners please post here. Additionally, you do not need to meet the five Travels replies minimum for starting freeforms to participate in this event.

Taking a Mission.
And just like Collab FFs, there will be a thread in this forum with all of the available challenges. You claim them here in the same way you claim a Collab FF; by posting the title of the mission and including links to the profiles of all characters involved. When accepted, a mod will roll your spawns and post your freeform in an event-specific IC forum located here. Unlike Collab FFs, there is no restrictions based on level, pokemon, class, or quantity of available quests. Any number of players may chose to take the same mission. The challenges will range from specific quests to vague prompts. Chose what fits you and your RP partners best!
Mod Involvement.
Generally, mods only stick around a freeform long enough to roll your spawns, write a grade, or distribute rewards. With this event, the mods will be monitoring the freeforms for a chance to drop an EVENT NOTICE. These are entirely random happenings, a short paragraph or so detailing some twist to which your characters must react. They can range from werebeast attacks, witch hunts, explosions, occult recruitments—anything! It is up to you and your RP partners to fold them into your freeform. Not all Event Notices will have a negative effect. Rarely, they might entail a gold, weapon, or item drop instead! Regardless, ignoring these Event Notices will reflect badly upon your grade.
Reward Tiers.
Leaders of each Faction will reward a character based on the work put into supporting that faction. The more you write for your Faction, the better prizes you will receive! Please note that you will only be rewarded by the faction to whom your loyalty is given -- if you change factions you will not get any rewards from your previous faction. The requirements for meeting each tier is detailed in the post above this. The tiers stack, meaning that, if you reach a new tier, you will receive all rewards in that tier and every tier below that. Tiers slightly favor finishing freeforms over post counts, so focus on writing solid, completed stories for meeting the tier requirements in the most efficient way. Special prize(s) will be given to the character that helps each faction out the most!

In addition, an OOC incentive in the form of an Award Badge is being handed out to each faction! These will appear beneath the user's information on the left side of the post, similar to how a mod's streak badge will appear, as shown in Adelulf and Khaleesi's posts, or Rosalie's own testing badge to the left.
* Completed, successful freeform.
While completing missions was brought up as the most effecient way of progressing through the tiers, this does not necessarily make it the easiest. These event freeforms will be graded on a similar scale to Collab Freeforms; you can technically finish any freeform, but if a mod finds the execution of your mission to be sloppy, incomplete, or riddled with errors, that quest will not be considered successful. Prioritize a solid, believable story over rushing to finish your missions.
_______________________________________________

Playing as an NPC:
( This is an entirely optional mechanic. ) In last year’s Grand Festival, we allowed players to RP as characters of their creation that hadn’t been accepted to the site. A similar mechanic will be used here, if desired. You may play any NPCs in order to better interact with other characters as long as you tag the character's name and the abbreviation "NPC" at the beginning of that post or portion of your post.

Random NPCs do not require any official applications, all you need to play an NPC is a brief, 2-paragraph description of them in your event thread tracker. Whatever you do with them will not be applicable to your official character (for example, you could play an NPC rogue, but whatever he/she steals cannot be given to your Handler PC) nor will it progress tier rewards, but it WILL count toward faction power rates. This is a good way to try out new character ideas and/or boost a faction’s power. You may have (1) active event freeform per NPC character.
    • NPCs will have a much higher success rate
    • Posts should still conform to the post length requirements: 2 paragraphs minimum, with a paragraph generally being 6-8 sentences. Please also be mindful of posting order and do not switch it up without express permission from your posting partner.

F.A.Q.
    Q: What’s a freeform?
A: You can read more about freeforms here.

Q: I don’t have five replies in my Travels yet. Am I exempt from this event?
A: Nope! This event is open to everyone.

Q: My character is already in three normal/collab freeforms. Does this mean I can’t participate until I make room?
A: No. You may take as many event freeforms per character as you please and these do not count toward your 3 regular freeform limit. The same limitations on spawns and captures still apply, however.

Q: Can I count these event freeform posts toward my PCR?
A: Yes. Each post counts as .5 points toward IC PCR, with a cap at 20 points (40 posts). Obviously, you can write more than 40 posts, but only up to 40 posts will count toward PCR. After these 40 IC PCR posts, up to 80 additional posts can be counted for .5 OOC PCR, with a cap at 40 points.

Q: Do any of these posts count toward my 20 post requirement for making a second character?
A: Yes. Each post counts as .5 points toward your 20 post requirement, with a cap at 10 points (20 posts). Obviously, you can write more than 20 posts, but only up to 20 posts will count toward your second character requirement.

Q: I made my choice but my character doesn’t fit there! Can I change my faction?
A: Yes, but you forfeit any progress you made toward your original faction, including rewards. To save us some trouble, please only switch factions once per character. You will only get rewards from the faction you ultimately support.

Q: My character is a Guardian but I want them to support the Healing Circle.
A: That’s totally fine! Every faction has draws for all classes, but remember that no choice comes without consequence. Rogues can lend aide to the Church, handlers can help the Mages, etc. etc.

    Q: What are Award Badges?
A: They are an OOC prize, just a small pixel badge that you can find in the column under your avatar. In this case, this not only announces your allegiance but also helps updating mods easily determine what sort of IC incentives your character receives in Travels from here on out. It’s also a great souvenir to show you were a part of the event and to show off your characters influence in it! http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz241/HarperRegion/Sprites/Emoticons/1.png

Q: When do I get my rewards/why haven’t I received my rewards yet?
A: Rewards are distributed at the end of the event around the start of the Grand Festival. It can take time to count up all of your posts and distribute your prizes. If you’re still worried you’ve been overlooked or have received the wrong things, please send a PM to Rosalie or another admin/head mod.

** New Items
_______________________________________________

There is a reason these four factions have pulled out ahead of the rest; they are all immensely well-outfitted, and it shows in rewards they give to those who help them the most. Between Arceus’s treasure holds and the Guard, huge amounts of gold are the Church’s primary incentive, and boons to the supporter as their secondary. The Mage Guild offers mysterious magical trinkets and spells for their backers—powerful enchantments for sure, but not easily hidden from a general populace eager to persecute magic-users. Whether or not they come out on top, Harper’s Passion has seen exponential growth in this conflict, and their main draw, besides their versatility, is resources to strengthen your pokemon. Healing Circle straddles the line between the mundane and the extraordinary, with medicine and other health- or protection-related items and spells.
_______________________________________________

The Church of Arceus

Blessings: These are passive, OOC effects that your character won’t actually know is doing anything but, as a believer, will swear something is affected.
Blessings of Knowledge automatically grant Character EXP, with Small Blessings giving 3 and the Blessed Relic giving 6.

The Blessing of Luck is a one-time use respawn token. From a freeform spawn pool, choose one pokemon to be rerolled. The new pokemon will be rolled from the next highest rarity tier, but will not go higher than RARE. (i.e.; reroll a purrloin (common) spawn from the pool of uncommon pokemon).

Blessing of Divine Protection is a permanent Condition effect on your pokemon. It allows the pokemon it is applied on to completely evade damage from either one super effective move OR one regular move and one status move per battle by a spectre of Arceus absorption of the move. Subsequent moves if in a combo will still hit as though the first move hit.
Aptitude Scroll: One-time use item. Scrolls taken from the Library of the Church granted to its followers that can help increase the proficiency of a certain aptitude. No extra Character EXP will be granted when using. Does one of the following:
  • Grants a new aptitude of choice. Starts at Rank 5
  • Grants progress toward a current aptitude
    • If current aptitude is Average (Rank 4-6), that aptitude will increase to the next rank
    • If current aptitude is Low (2-3) or High (7-8), that aptitude will receive 50% progress to the next rank, on top of whatever progress has been already made toward the next rank. 25% progress granted toward ranks 0-1 or 9.
Anti-Magic Ward: A charm that negates any magic directed toward the wearer. Magic items in its general vicinity (besides the wearer’s) stop working or begin to malfunction.
_______________________________________________

The Mage Guild

Emulation Gear: Similar to elemental gear, these items have been tampered with by the Mage's Guild to emulate certain pokemon moves. They respond only to human touch so pokemon may not use them. An extensive list can be found here.

Elemental Enchantment Stone: One time use item. A magical stone that can imbue a mundane item with elemental properties. An accomplished mage must be contracted to enchant the item.

Early Evolution Spell: One-time use enchanted scroll. Allows one pokemon to evolve 5 levels earlier than normal while remaining healthy.
_______________________________________________

Healing Circle

Healing Rune: One-time use item. A thin, white patch that fully heals one pokemon when applied to the pokeball, even from the brink of death.

Patches: Similar to the X items (X attack, X defend, etc), Patches are consumable items that when applied to pokemon will grant them protection during battles. These last only for a few hours and once used no longer have any effect. They come in packs of five. The primary patches are the Safeguard Patch and the Mist Patch, but others are currently being developed. Come in packs of five, mixed if desired.
Safeguard Patch: Applies Safeguard to the pokemon during the patch's life cycle. Prevents the pokemon from being afflicted by status conditions
Mist Patch: Applies mist to the pokemon during the patch's life cycle. Prevents the pokemon's stats from being lowered.
Protection Rings: These are non-elemental rings embedded with a protection charm derived from a pokemon's abilities, mostly centered around protection and status immunity. When worn, the character will be granted protection as if they had that pokemon ability. Prolonged use of the ring may cause the person to develop a small resistance to the ailment, but overuse of the ring will run the risk of potential addiction to its effects. The charm loses its effect in the vicinity of an Anti-Magic Ward. They respond only to human touch so pokemon may not use them.
