Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

[ Welcome to Harper! I started your Travels here because Luke seems to be in the Edgewood at the end of the RP sample, considering the mention of the raft. Remember to keep an egg count and post in update requests after you post in your travels thread! If you would like to know the primary type of your egg, please PM an admin (or me). If you have any questions, any of the mods would be happy to assist you! Have fun! ]

RP Sample/Prologue

Luke's walk to the raft would be rather uneventful, with only his thoughts and the new poke ball to accompany him on his new journey. The absence of the old man's impositions meant that Luke was now freer than he had been in some time, but he now needed to figure out exactly what to do with that freedom. Still bearing the injuries from his former master's temper a mere matter of days before, he would find his way back to the raft slowly, although he would soon realize that he would need to react quickly in order to keep the raft at all.

He would not need his honed skill of pokemon finding to realize that he was not alone by the raft. A small mammalian pokemon had found its way onto the planks, experimentally gnawing at the wood with its already-long teeth. The species would be familiar enough, but it was quite odd to see a bidoof, especially a young one, alone. It looked skittish, jumping at a small rustling of leaves and whirling around to face it quickly.

If Luke looked over towards the nearby plant that had rustled, he would get a brief glimpse of something pink and white. The colors could describe many pokemon, but the white egg in the pink pouch could only mean one thing: a chansey, a rare pokemon indeed. What was a chansey doing out here?

It could have a handler, hiding away somewhere, or it could be wild - which could mean a very good price for Luke if he managed to use his poaching skills to bring it in. But chansey was not like other pokemon Luke may have poached - the species was known to be pacifistic, although capable of taking a great many wounds before being weakened enough to snare or catch - plus, this would be his first time trying something like that alone. Was this a lead worth following, even with a brand-new pokemon and an unhatched egg?

Then again, his own escape was a necessary thing, especially since he had taken the old man's pokemon from his corpse. If the Guardians managed to put two and two together, that could spell disaster for Luke right off the bat. The raft was still strong, but as the bidoof returned to its gnawing, the small splinters of wood flying away from its teeth revealed that Luke didn't have much time before the raft would have a hole, which would essentially render it useless and necessitate finding a different way to flee the scene.

Was it worth it to try to snare the chansey, or did Luke believe it necessary to get the bidoof off his raft and escape the scene as quickly as possible before the destruction of the wood? The decision would determine how he began his new life as an independent young man.

Luke’s head was still ringing, his back and body were aching. He hated the old man all the same with every throbbing pulse that was sent through his body. Still, he made his way along the same path that he and the old man had forged to their temporary campsite. He thought about what had happened to him in his whole life, and he couldn’t help but laugh to himself. There was so much going through his mind and he now realized that he had free reign over his own life.

Of course, his time of it however, would not be very easy. He pushed through the foliage only just because he could hear the sound of something strange. There was no way for him to know what the sound was, but he did know that the sound was somehow familiar to him. Looking through the foliage he saw at once that it was a bidoof chewing on the raft that both he and his master were using before they had chased off after this past prey. This was not the first time that the raft was threatened, but the last time it had taken a good long time to fix it. They had come while Luke and his master was gone and they had come back when it was all over.

Looking around he had noticed the youth of the little normal type and shook his head. It wouldn’t be alone, it would be either with a parent, or a person. His first thought was guardians; it would be his terrible bad luck if that was the case. Knowing full well that people went missing in the Edgewood all the time, and once someone was lost it was nearly impossible to find them again. In fact, it had been the first rule that Tom had taught him “Never leave my side or sight unless you are making an obvious trail.” He had kept to this rule the whole time, and no matter where he went he knew how to get back to where he had started from.

His mind however, was snapped back to the present by him looking and seeing a white and pink shape in the foliage. It was only a bit, but he instantly knew that this pokemon was a Chansey. This hadn’t been the first one he’d seen, and truthfully he had seen them sell very well. Yet, it had taken a long time to catch the thing, and Luke knew that he didn’t have the pokemon, didn’t have the plans, didn’t have the time to catch this thing. He wanted it so much, more than anything, but he had his priorities. Deciding that he wouldn’t take out his new Pokemon; which he had started to call “Ashi” unless the need was dire and unless he needed to fight the Bidoof. She was tough, and that was well and good.

What he did do at this point was jump out from his cover and gave the best roar he could. He moved to chase away the Bidoof with the hope that the surprise and the fact that it was skittish in its mannerisms would cause it to run away. There was no telling if the Chansey would attack him, but he had no choice. He needed the raft, he knew the paths through the edgewood as if they were forged by him; some of them had been. Still, he did not want to go through the process of getting back to Fough Place which was his first destination in mind on foot. All of this went through his head as he surged out of his cover and tried his best to scare away the Bidoof from his raft one hand going to his pokeball, the other going behind his back to grip one of his daggers.

{ .6 exp! }
As Luke crossed the threshold and yelled towards the Bidoof, the skittish Pokemon jumped. Like, visibly jumped. The mammal’s eyes danced towards the loud screaming, scurried a little further onto the raft and hid behind a rather solid looking pole, and started to chew on some of the ropes that kept the boards together. Maybe the idea of startling the little Pokemon wasn’t such a good idea. Well, Luke would live and let learn, right? Maybe there was something he could do…

The Chancey, meanwhile, made a rather annoyed sigh from the brush, but didn’t come out of it. She stayed where she was, and the long tendrils of fur on her head bounced as she moved. She was stepping away and the quiet singsong of, “Chaaancey~” resonated through the clearing. If anything, Luke might be more worried about what was going on. Even more rustling could be heard, and the audible words could be heard:

“Where’s that Bidoof? The stupid thing ran off again.”

Perhaps the person coming was a fellow poacher, but the chances of that were pretty slim. It was more likely a fellow rogue, or even a guardian who happened to be on patrol, and just so happened to lose their Bidoof. The Chancey, despite what Luke would want, was clearly an owned Pokemon. But as the footsteps traveled closer, Luke had a choice to make: run, or stand his ground.

The options would present in two different ways: Luke could, of course, climb onto his raft and try to get the Bidoof off, hopefully with enough time to push off into the lazy water and just barely miss the person who would step out of the underbrush. The Bidoof, though, would chop its beaver-like front teeth at Luke, and it wouldn’t be easy to get the skittish Pokemon off. In fact, it’d be extremely comedic, because every time Luke would be close enough, the Pokemon would scurry to the other side of the raft. Of course, Luke could always just take the Bidoof and toss it at a later time, once he’s, uh – has some distance between himself and the mysterious stranger.

The other option would be that Luke could stand his ground, and let the stranger approach. If he decided that, the stranger would come out in well made tauros-hide boots, and leather and chain mail; not a guardian, but not a rogue either. He wasn’t all that tall, maybe a few inches taller than Luke himself, with shoulder length brown hair. He looked exhausted and unsure, and a little lost – perhaps, if Luke hung around, this could be a good time to exploit some of those new rogue skills that he had.

Either way, Luke would only have a few moments to make up his mind. He had to decide quick, and get to it.

Luke’s eyes went wide as he saw that the creature moved further onto his raft and near the pole that was used to push the raft along the shallow bank of the logger sea. Seeing that he was instead chewing the ropes made his heart beat faster. He could not afford for this raft to be damaged beyond his ability to repair it which was in all honesty lacking, to say the least. He surged forward onto his raft and swore “Get off my raft you little rodent!” he only just barely heard the sound of the chancey moving off to sing its song to someone else. This someone who responded.

With a groan of annoyance Luke moved closer to the Bidoof, but it snapped its teeth at him. This made him frown and he shook his head slowly reaching back to pull out the Pokeball of his own pokemon. Dropping it to the wooden raft below his feet it opened and out came Ashi. She saw the Bidoof and Luke spoke “He’s eating our raft, stop him.”

The Bite Pokemon looked to the rodent like pokemon, and snarled deep in her throat her mouth full of fangs on full display. She would lunge at the smaller pokemon looking to scare him either off the raft, or at least into the water. Whatever happened first so long as he stopped chewing up the raft and the pieces that held it together. Luke on the other hand would move to a spot where he could keep the Bidoof in front of him but still watch the foliage. He didn’t know who this person was, and was not sure he wanted to be seen, or that he wanted to interact with this person, but he didn’t have a choice. He wasn’t sure he could get away on the raft.

As he saw the man emerging he would hiss at Ashi “Heel.” Ashi having been trained by him and his former master she would stop what she was doing and move to his side never taking her eyes off of the intruder however.

When the man emerged completely from cover Luke would look at him and point to wherever the Bidoof was “It seems that your little Bidoof has a taste for my raft. Take him away before he destroys it anymore, if you would be so kind.” He would say in a tone that was not unfriendly, but rather lacking most emotions one would be able to recognize “You should also be careful, people and Pokemon alike can get lost in these woods. He doesn’t seem old enough to really take care of himself.” Having finished speaking he would fold his arms behind his back gripping the two dagger hilts that were in his belt ready to react if the man proved to be a threat instead of the traveler he seemed to be. Ashi would only glance at the human and keep her eyes on the Bidoof.

{+0.5 EXP!}

Luke's shouting did little good; the bidoof continued to chomp at the ropes, now starting to fray. Its skittishness was overcome with stubbornness and being shouted at only made it want to wreck the human construction faster. The flash of light narrowed its pupils and it flicked its attention toward Ashi, teeth still hooked in the rope. It was clear this pokemon had been in a fight before. Its fur stuck up all over and it raised itself onto its hind legs. A chittering snarl escaped its blunt toothed mouth and it worked itself up into a fury.

The bidoof snarled right back at the poochyena, ready to fight in an instant. It was in the midst of attacking when Ashi took off back to her handler. The bidoof got back on four paws and lashed its tail, glowering. It hadn't heard the chansey's call or it might have behaved a little better. Or perhaps not, no way to be sure. The scraggly man who trudged onto the shore spotted Lucas, slid his gaze to his bidoof, and sighed. He began to curse under his breath as he took a few more slow steps toward the raft. The chansey popped out of the brush and trotted at his side, more energetic by half than their owner. "Caboose! Get your tiny arse back over here and stop chewing this nice boy's raft."

At the sound of its master's voice, the bidoof leaped off the raft and trotted to the stranger, head held high. It even went so far as to hiss in Ashi's direction, as if it weren't the one at fault in this situation. The lumbering man turned to Lucas, head cocked. Tangled hair hung at his temples down to his shoulders, obscuring part of his cheeks and chin. Despite the clear look of exhaustion and the wear of his clothes, he made an imposing figure well over six feet. How anyone that big could get himself lost anywhere was beyond contemplation. The stranger stared at Lucas a few seconds, then glanced down at his bidoof.

"This one was supposed to be sniffing for a trail to get out of here. Must've gotten hungry." He crouched down and picked up the bidoof, digging through his pack to offer the pokemon a morsel. It devoured the offered berries with haste and scrambled around to be set back down. The stranger held the bidoof taut in one arm, then held his free hand out to Lucas. "Samson. I did, in fact, get myself lost in this blasted forest. All we wanted were--" He shrugged. "Doesn't matter now. What we'd like is to get out of this forest. Been nigh on a week, if I counted correctly."

He scratched the back of the bidoof's neck and surveyed the young man. "It seems you know your way around here, at least enough to bring a raft. Looks to me it might fit two." He didn't step forward or invade Lucas' space in any way. Instead he leaned back on his heels. "How's about I make you a deal? Help me out of this accursed forest and there'll be a nice reward in it for you. 'sides, an extra pair of hands to row and a few more pokemon to keep your raft safe might be of use." The man's wide mouth split into a grin. "I promise Caboose here won't eat your raft anymore. He's sorry for the trouble he caused, aren't you 'boose?" The man rocked the bidoof, who made a soft oof of a sound in the back of its throat.

Lucas could take the man's request and make some easy coin if he so chose. With another hand he wouldn't worry so much about being attacked, plus he might rest a while and let the other row. Or he could tell the man off and leave him to his fate. Surely, he might offer direction to get out of Edgewood but judging from the man's mildly dirty and travel worn appearance, he didn't look like he'd take directions very well. No doubt he didn't know which way was up at the moment. Tired and carrying heavy bags beneath his eyes, he looked close to dropping right there. Lucas could do whatever he liked.

Luke’s eyes went hard as he saw the little snapper chewing through his ropes. This was something that he couldn’t allow, but he didn’t have a choice.

When the Bidoof snarled back at Ashi her mouth began to glow with the power of the Thunder Fang that was her birth gift. Yet, the call back from attack brought her right next to Luke’s side and while standing there she stood ready for an attack her mouth still glowing yellow with the electric type attack she was prepared to use on him.

Luke didn’t move, and kept his hands behind his back gripping his dagger hilts as they hung in his belt. Seeing how big this man was, and that he was well travel worn he had clearly been in the Edgewood for a while, and the youth was sure that he didn’t look much better. As the Bidoof got off his raft he also got off standing next to it Ashi however remained on the raft her mouth no longer glowing, but she was clearly ready for a fight should one be offered. Watching the other man as he scooped up his Bidoof Luke was curious as to what would bring such a man out here. Still, he decided that saying nothing right now would be the best policy.

The comment about what he was looking at not mattering now made him raise a brow in silent inquiry. He nodded his head slowly “My name is Luke, but I’m sorry to say that unless you have some extra rope We won’t be going anywhere.” He said climbing back onto the raft ignoring the hand that had offered him. With only a slight nudge of his foot the rope that the Bidoof was chewing came apart “We” he realized the slip but continued carefully “had run out of rope already. So, we were heading back to Fough Place in order to stock up on more supplies. If you have some rope and want to give it to the cause then with a promise of payment I’d be happy to give you a ride to Fough Place.”

Walking off of the raft he stood next to it his hands still behind his back gripping his daggers “The raft could fit you, me, and your Chansey easily. So, that’s where the situation stands right now.” A thought passed his mind and he bowed his head “Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Luke, and this is Ashi.” He said gesturing to his partner who was staring at both Samson and Caboose. “That’s the whole of the situation as I see it. Otherwise we will have to get there on shanks ponyta."

{ .5 exp; don’t forget to add +3 egg counts for your dev level up! }

Samson eyed Luke with caution as the boy didn’t seem to move. Despite how Luke tried to hide it, Samson knew quite well what the other had behind his back, but made no attempt to point it out. Samson definitely knew when to choose his battles, and the little boy didn’t seem like he’d do much harm. Well, not yet, at least. The man’s dirty hand pet over his Bidoof’s fur as the little Pokemon attempted to squirm away. It was definitely not something the Bidoof was used to.

“You best get your little pooch under control, less you want it to be drowned,” Samson warned casually as he watched the was the Poochyena continued to snarl at Caboose. Samson was, surprisingly, rather cool headed, despite the fact that this boy was basically openly threatening him. Samson watched as Luke introduced himself, and then talk about how they – whoever he was traveling with – had run out of rope. Samson gave a broad shouldered shrug. He barely had food, let alone ropes to help this boy. They’d have to find another way.

“I’ve barely been eating, mate – I don’t know what you expect me to help with,” the man pointed out. While he really did want to be snooty, he passed it along as he studied the raft. He knocked Caboose on the head – not hard, but definitely enough to make the little Bidoof stop squirming underneath his tight grip – and he rose an eyebrow down at the little Pokemon, “Caboose, why’d you go and ruin other people’s things? You annoying little goof,” Samson scolded. Before the Bidoof could react, though, the handler gave a deep, restless sigh before he shook his head. How would they proceed now?

His eyes looked over at the raft again, and the bubbling water beneath. The Logger Sea – and especially the rivers of Edgewood, sometimes tended to get a little rough. It was probably a good thing they couldn’t hop on the raft and go. The water looked higher than usual, and a bit too fast for Samson’s liking. It was definitely a clear sign to him that the waters were far too dangerous to go along with. “I guess we’ll have to find another way around the situation,” Samson finally replied to Luke’s statement about the issues at hand. Samson turned his attention to the world around them, picking up on subtle little clues, but didn’t make them obvious.

“Guess we’ll have to walk, or we’ll have to find something that can be used as a rope substitute,” the man proclaimed.

For Luke, the choices were pretty obvious: he could either ditch the man and try to go through the waters regardless of the roughness, or he could hang around and see what could happen. The man, should Luke decide to stay and agree about finding a rope substitute, would wander a little aways towards where Luke had come from, and would find trees and vines interesting, make the occasional, ‘I wonder if this is poisonous’ comment, and then proceed along the way. His Chancey would stay where she was, glued near the bushes, but the Bidoof would wiggle in Samson’s arms.

It didn’t seem like Samson was going to let the little destructive guy go anytime soon. That was probably a good thing, too.

Eventually, if Luke didn’t stop him, Samson would travel only a few feet into the woods – still within earshot – and then proclaim an excited aha. If it spurred Luke’s curiosity enough to come and see, he’d find Samson crouched on the ground, over a large, menacing looking hole that, oddly enough, was not there when Luke was on his way back to his raft the first time.

Of course, should Luke decide to ditch Samson and push the raft out regardless, he’d realize that the water was far too rapid to steer, and Ashi would yip in terror as the water rocked the wooden logs this way and that. The foam would splash on fur and skin, and the top of the raft would quickly become slippery.

As Luke watched Samson he seemed to take his measure, and he didn’t know what to think of the man at first. However, his mind was made up for him when he heard the threat to Ashi. With a click of his tongue, Ashi seemed to relax, but Luke didn’t. His face was blank and neutral as best he could and he only shrugged his shoulders “I’m not worried about that.” He said rather dismissively. That threat had sealed this man’s fate. As soon as it would be beneficial to do so Luke was going to kill this man. No one threatened his Pokemon and would live to brag about it. Still, revenge was best served cold and he had infinite patience.

The man didn’t have rope and that was sad, but it wasn’t exactly all that hard to be believed. Luke gave another shrug and let his hands come from behind his back showing that they were empty, and held nothing to worry over. He sighed looking to the forest with a bit of an annoyed look in his eyes “Vines and other replacements aplenty in the forest, but it’ll take some time to fix once we gather the stuff.” He said rather to himself than to Samson. Ashi however, kept a watch over them, but she was silent enough only making sure that nothing funny was done while her master wasn’t watching.

As Samson moved over to the forest Luke found his chance, but he already made his choice. He would keep the man around, and stick with him. Only so he could cut the man’s throat when the earliest opportunity arrived. Luke’s eyes landed on the Chansey to keep track of it. The pink Pokemon seemed to be happy to stay by the bushes. The other Pokemon Caboose was being held by Samson who wasn’t letting it go. This was at least some consolation to Luke meaning that he wouldn’t have to fix even more of the raft once he buried this man. That thought brought the thought of a bidoof pelt to Luke’s mind and he knew it would be the best. However, the Chansey would be a good catch to take back and sell somewhere else. All in all, if he could accomplish his hidden objective then it would be a windfall for him.

Luke was brought from his thoughts of murder by the sound of “aha”. Moving over to the raft he snagged his pack and slung it over his shoulders moving to find the voice. As he found it he saw that Samson was crouched over a large hole. “That wasn’t there earlier.” He said in a voice that showed he was thinking about the ramifications of a hole that just suddenly appears. He knew of several Pokemon in the Edgewood that could cause such a hole, and none of those options gave him any kind of peace. As he got nearer he was careful to keep both him and Ashi out of arm’s reach of Samson staying well out of his ability to lunge to grab them and they moved around to the opposite side of the hole to peek into it.

As he got there he looked over to Samson with a raised brow “Any thoughts on what made this hole?” he asked keeping one eye on the man the other on the hole. Ashi standing just behind him and to the left so she could lunge if the need arises, without knocking over her trainer. Luke didn’t trust this man, and wanting to kill him didn’t help him be at ease. Yet, this hole was the more pressing matter at hand so he had to be focused “If this hole was made by a Pokemon; which seems the most likely. Then we need to ask if this Pokemon is still around and can pose a threat to us.”
