Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Summer

The onset of the Summer season has led to a swarming of Fire-, Electric-, and Bug-types, overtaking most populations in the Region. In their place, Water- and Grass-types have retreated to the shade and to cooler areas, while Ice-types have all but vanished. The rising temperatures has also led to the annual thaw of the infamously cold Istin City, though it remains the coldest.

Full Name: Huyana “Miriam” Taah’sin
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Lesbian

Class:  Handler, Guardian-Aligned
Starting City:  Harper’s Pass
Patron or Trick Lord:  N/A

Overall Appearance:
Huyana smells like rosemary and almond oil, earthy but not unpleasant. She is careful with her hygiene and bathes regularly; her clothes, too, are well kept and simple. These, too, are often in earthy tones – she isn’t usually one for the flashier clothing, but she isn’t entirely adverse to it either. However, that costs money, and money isn’t something Huyana has ever had an astronomic abundance of.

Huyana stands on the taller side for a human female, at exactly five feet and eight inches. She is tall and lean, with long legs that are used to running and swimming. She’s physically tough, as one would expect from her background, and her hands are nimble and dextrous from working with fabrics and patients alike. Occasionally, the two inter-lap; she may be treating a stab wound in one hour and then the ripped shirt in the next, both in the same professional manner. Her hands work tirelessly at what she does, in careful and precise movements that mirror her quiet nature. This quiet nature, too, often surprises those who do not expect it. Huyana is used to being seen and not heard; there is little fanfare in silence. Her voice, too, is soft, albeit more on the low side.

This Bulwari woman’s dark hair is short and has remained so for some time – once it grows too long, she hacks it back into some semblance of order, though it still finds ways to defy her in small ways. Flyaway hairs prone to frizz in humidity and as dry as a swimmer’s hair tends to be. It sits somewhere between straight and wavy, and the thick waves are parted in the middle. When the sun hits it directly, it almost looks brown. Huyana is very much like her ancestors, in that her amber eyes are narrow and her mouth is wide. Her heart-shaped face is complimented by high cheekbones, sharp eyes, and a rounded nose.

Her skin is a deep caramel, but it is not unscarred. A brand lies on the outside of her left shoulder; three circles, each one bigger than the last, fall vertically, connected only by lines. What appears to be a set of claw-mark shapes taper off to the side. Those with the knowledge of these particular slave brands may be aware that this particular slave was obtained by a slaving ring that operates from Dorani – and as such, may also be aware that the claw-marks indicate her freedom. The original brand is faded more than the additions.

Huyana's a guarded person, bordering on paranoid, and this shows through the way she always seems to keep an eye on everyone. Distrust. Too see her express her emotions is rare outside of her eyes - expressive and telling of whatever mood she's submersed herself in.
Distinguishing Features:
  • Amber Eyes.
  • Navas Bulwari.
  • Brand on the outside of her left shoulder.
  • Tall for her sex – 5’8”.
Overall Personality:

Huyana is well intentioned, and her motherly nature is difficult to hide. She has an intense need to take care of and protect others. She’s also a compulsive meddler, and often gets involved with all of the things she really has no business to. She is blunt, honest, and decisive. If there is something that needs to be fixed, she quickly moves to fix it. If there’s something she doesn’t know, she resolves to learn everything she can. She shares the same standards on working, albeit stricter, than her forbears – both her parental figures and those she trained under.

To put it bluntly, Huyana is stubborn and determined to get things right. She is serious and literal-minded the majority of the time, but she is not humourless. She is willing to tease and joke, although it’s just as easy to fluster her – particularly about personal affairs relating to the heart. Huyana’s feelings have not been considered for so long, not to those she’s served, that even giving non-professional opinions or sharing feelings is difficult, and as such Huyana is a recluse even amongst those she considers allies. Few bear witness to her inner insecurities; some believe she has none, but they’d be well fooled to believe so.

It should also be noted, however, that whilst Huyana is generally even tempered, her temper is also deadly when provoked – very much like a Ursaring protecting her cubs. Her sense of justice and her want to protect others often drives her at odds with her own physical and mental health, and really, Huyana would give someone her still-beating heart if it went with this purpose. Self-sacrifice is a vital lesson; whether through duty or love. Once Huyana sets herself a task, there is little that can stop her - pure determination powers her forward through the dark times... even if sometimes it happens to be the stony and silent type.

Life. It is a concept that fascinates Huyana, and is something she’s against taking for no reason. For what people seem to treat it as, as if it can be so easily thrown away, it is a curious concept that Huyana finds herself pondering often. As a result, Huyana isn't one to kill unless it's a genuine life or death situation. Why kill when you can wound? Why wound when you can subdue? Why subdue when you can pacify? Most of all, Huyana does not fight unless she has first extended her hand in peace to the other.

But this does not make Huyana weak, even so. Sometimes one has to fight for peace, contradictional as it may sound.
History:
When Huyana was born, it was to two hopeful parents, an elder sister, and a pod who doted on her. Born during a storm in the community houseboat, it was with great concern that Huyana’s mother made sure of her successful delivery. Huyana came from a long line of strong Bulwari women, particularly healers and warriors who were amongst those to survive the initial event that brought them to Harper, but her mother was a cautious woman who would take no risks in her daughter’s incoming birth. The Bulwari of the Navas were overjoyed by her arrival, and the clan’s celebrations, like with every birth, were ecstatic and carried over well into the next morning.

At her Kapaala, otherwise known as her First Birthday Ceremony, Huyana received a friendly Chingling alongside the traditional Pokéball. Later, when Huyana was old enough, she’d affectionately name the small one Se’risquie—the Stormsinger—for the young Pokémon was particularly cheerful during and prior to the coming of the rain. The two were close, though Huyana still wonders if the Pokémon is doing well in her absence, if they still live at all.

It could easily be said that Huyana was born with the sea in her veins and music in her heart. As with most Bulwari children, Huyana did not differ. As a small child, she danced and sang around the boats, learned to swim early, and often watched her mother taking care of patients. Once the time came, nobody attempted to stop her from beginning to informally ‘apprentice’ under her mother and sister as a physician. She was well on her way in following their footsteps, and took to the profession like she took to water – like she had been born for the role.

Huyana was a hopeful, cheerful child, but she was in the habit of wandering off – or simply disappearing for periods of time as she swam and explored. Se’risquie’s ability to swim wasn’t terribly good, however, especially as a younger pokemon, and Huyana remembers building them a small (albeit crude) raft with an attached rope so that they could swim together.

A number of those in her family were known to follow the tenets of the Balician faith. Huyana's parents both followed separate paths; in particular, her mother was of the Earth path, and her father was of the Water path. Both took their faiths seriously and welcomed Huyana when she wanted to witness their rituals, but neither pushed her into making a choice. The choice was hers to make – and for a while, Huyana teetered on the edge, never truly making a decision.

But things rarely lasted forever, Huyana came to realise, when she was ripped away from her entire pod – her entire family. The attack came suddenly during the night, whilst the pod had temporarily docked at one of the beaches. A band of slavers attacked the pod, aiming to take whatever they could, and though the pod fought well, several of the girls were taken. Amongst them was Huyana, and she still vividly remembers the fate of the first girl who tried to break away; killed mercilessly and without remorse. An example for the rest to follow. Huyana was eleven years old, and even now, she remembered everything. Every little detail, down to the way the blood trickled from the dead girl’s broken face. Her injured and unconsicous Pokémon was left behind with the rest of her family, and though Huyana may never know of what happened to the Chingling, her pod considered Se’risquie’s survival as an omen of Huyana’s survival. And in a way, it was.

The Bulwari of the Navas did not give up on looking for Huyana, but things were made difficult once Huyana was dragged over to Doran Village and branded. Her hair was cut short, her hands chained together, and she was sold off to the highest bidder – a noble lady who hired the ‘exotic’ young girl to act as a playmate and maid for her daughter. Viviane Fox was a precarious child, easily bored but fond of having someone to ‘boss about’. From there, it was up to the north – directly to Harper’s Pass. It was decided that during her service Huyana was to be known as ‘Miriam’ instead – Viviane selected it at her mother’s behest, but the daughter was a tad more merciful, despite her selfishness.

Slavery meant being clothed and housed and fed, it meant housework instead of the gruelling labour that she’d heard some were often forced into. With no idea where her family was or how she would get home to, Huyana – now Miriam – was left with no choice but to continue serving Viviane and her mother, Aalis. Over time, Aalis Fox enrolled Miriam under an apprenticeship in her rare off-time, to hone her current skills and begin to branch out into new ones. Viviane often wanted new clothing, or scraped her knees, and Miriam’s duty was to keep her Lady looking and feeling proper.

In all intents and purposes, Miriam became Viviane’s shadow. It did not guarantee her total loyalty, for Huyana still yearned for freedom and for her family, but it was the fear of the unknown that kept her from contacting the Guardians about it – because who knew what Aalis would do after that? How would Huyana get home when she wasn't even sure where she was?

Over ten years on from her initial capture, Miriam was finally free to leave once relations between Lady Aalis and Lady Viviane soured – Miriam’s work may have revolved around the younger, but her real Mistress was Aalis herself. Viviane had grown old enough for her services to no longer be needed.

And Huyana jumped at the chance.
RP Sample:
Huyana was overwhelmed, if that was the right term for it.

She wasn't so sure anymore. Of all of the things she could be feeling right now (and some of which she did), Huyana had never thought of herself as weak enough to feel... lost. Useless. It was all too much, right then, and Huyana had to stop herself several times before realising that she was no longer in service to the Fox family any more. Because for years, that was all Huyana was expected to be.

Freedom wasn’t something she was used to – routine was out of the window. The last ten or so years of Huyana’s life had revolved almost entirely around Lady Aalis and Lady Viviane, and even though this was what she’d wanted for all of that time… It was like the rug had been torn away from under her feet. And yet. Different. Huyana's fingers curled around the cord that held her new Pokécard, wound it into curls around her index finger.

As a woman who had relied on routine for so long, this change felt strange. She wasn’t sure if she liked it or not, even if this had been a dream for years. The reasons, of course she did – she had very specific goals she’d like to complete, and people she’d love to see again.

Slavery had never been in her cards, but it had been the hand that she’d been dealt. The cards had been forced into her hands enough to feel small cuts open in her arms; metaphorically, at least, because it was not blood that escaped but the water she'd been ripped away from. The fact that things had changed so rapidly and with little warning, more than once, had been disconcerting. The morning of peace would have been blissful to most, but Huyana didn’t see it this way. Not anymore.

The thought of leaving to be able to focus on her own life, for a time, was wonderful, but she still felt some kind of loss as she walked through the main doors of the Residence. Lady Aalis had been generous, had bought armor and other items that Huyana would need on her Journey, and Huyana had been grateful. It had not stopped the elder Lady from referring to her as that incorrect and cursed name, but Huyana bit her tongue. She was used to it, and had been for a long time. Even when she was no longer in service, the Bulwari woman had felt it prudent to keep this relationship, at least, strictly professional. The two most curious items, however, were what had held most of her attention the previous night.

Mainly, the egg. Eggs weren’t uncommon in Harper’s Pass, and they’d occasionally turn up in and around the manor, but this one was… special, Huyana thought, because-

“Wait! Miriam!”

Huyana stopped, turning on her heels – Viviane had come running out through the doors after her, slightly huffing, as if she’d been running for some time. Her dress was awkwardly scrunched up around her hips, as if she’d had to hike it up in order to do so fast enough.

Viviane skidded to a stop, readjusting her dress, and held something round out to Huyana. Not recognising it at first, it took a second before Huyana’s brain could catch up – a Pokéball. Occupied, too. Before she could say anything in return, the red-headed lady had already opened Huyana’s hand to deposit the sphere.

“I know mother gave you an egg, but you need more help then that,” Viviane started, and though she wasn’t smiling, Huyana knew better. She could only nod as Viviane continued, but for once – her mind was elsewhere.

Perhaps Viviane cared more than she’d like to admit otherwise. Huyana resisted the urge to reach out and wipe the dirt off of her former Lady’s cheek – the smudge had likely come from Viviane’s prompt escape from her newest maid, considering Huyana couldn’t see the mousy girl anywhere.

Huyana raised her eyebrows, looking at (but not really listening to) Viviana until the dark haired girl friended.

“… and long story short, they wanted to come with you.”

“Pardon?”

“Did you- ugh, alright,” Viviane scrunched her nose up, “I said the Pokémon inside warmed up to you more than anyone else here, so they’re better off going with you.”

Viviane turned to leave, which jolted Huyana back to awareness; she blinked, stepped forward.

“Wait, my Lady – whatever is inside-”

Viviane laughed, light and potentially mocking – with a dismissive hand gesture, to boot.

“I’m not your lady any more, Huyana, and you’re going to have to find out for yourself. Goodbye.”

And Huyana was left alone. It wouldn't be until Viviana had left that Huyana would move to release the Pokémon, but the time for suspense was over.

Lets get this over with.

Weapon and Armour Choices:  Padded Leather Gambeson and Leather Pants. No Weapon.
Intended Aptitudes:  Tailor, First Aid, Swimming.
Tailor - Trained from a relatively young age, enjoys repair work and dress making. Huyana does not enjoy this as much as she would have if she had been given a free reign; her designs were constrained and limited to the colourless and drab choices of her tutor.

First Aid - Huyana had some experience watching and learning more natural cures from her family at first, and Huyana has done her best to remember it all. Further training in the more 'modern' methods of first aid and treatment used within Harper's Pass, and apprenticed under the physicians who worked for the Fox family. As an unofficial apprentice, Huyana got used to the sight of blood and horrific injuries remarkably fast.

Past experience has resulted in many scraped knees or shallow cuts, for Huyana's company lay within her Lady's will. Steady hands would also make her especially precise in surgeries if required.

Swimming - Pretty much born in the water; it became a lifelong dedication and hobby from as young as four years old, albeit not in as many words. If Huyana wasn't working or learning, she'd swim. It became a great coping technique.

Anything Else: I’d like to retire Felicia in exchange for Huyana. The only item I’d like to transfer over is the Lugia’s Pearl that she bought. I’ve been working on Huyana for a long time aaaa dies 5ever

Please don’t offer Kangaskan as a starter choice or egg if possible! I wish to get one later instead. Not sure if I'm allowd to ask on this level, but the worst that can happen is just that you say no, right? http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz241/HarperRegion/Sprites/Emoticons/1.png

Also, I’d like to build the Midwife, Herb Lore, Mediator, and Pokemon Handling aptitudes for Huyana over her travels, but this is more of a note for myself than anyone else. Mods may certainly take inspiration for ideas from this for their travel ideas/prompts, of course, since these are skills I wish for her to develop anyway!

Finally, apologies about the RP sample. Willing to improve on it but it's given me so much grief trying to construct it so far, argh. Spent a ton of time on Huyana's profile, so any constructive feedback is welcome - though I already trust in you guys. Feel free to take your time in getting to this too - I'm genuinely not in a rush. <3

EDIT 14/06/17: Please blank out the 'anything else?' section if Huyana is accepted please! This is purely for organisation purposes as I feel like it would bother me otherwise. (I'm autistic but I don't think this is an autism thing as it is simply preference). (PS. Added a bit to RP sample.)

Welcome to Harper! You've earned 610g for your app, plus an additional 150g for not taking a weapon, putting you at a starting total of 760g. Here are your pokemon choices:

http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz241/HarperRegion/Sprites/339barboach.png - A pokemon that is steady as the earth and fluid as the water, it balances stubbornness and sheer stability with the knack of a water type for having just enough flexibility to survive, adapt, master those flaws that make rock or ground types vulnerable. It is a pokemon who begins by feeling its way through life, everywhere they go, and becomes a pokemon that is capable of wreaking serious and widespread havoc when provoked. Highly territorial, the trait harks back to how resolutely Huyana holds to her heritage and culture. It may be neither a healer nor a tailor, but it is a strong and steady pokemon that is often overlooked at first, and has the potential to grant her the confidence to move forward even without the "sight" to know what is ahead.
http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz241/HarperRegion/Untitled3_zps043d041b.png - The Restraint Pokemon -- apt, considering that restraint is so much of what Huyana, or 'Miriam,' as this may remind her of, hates. It is a pokemon built around caution, waiting, controlling of tempers, and of swallowing the tongue for fear of repercussions. For fear of life. It mirrors her in many ways, but in all of the ways that Huyana would do better without reinforcing. It is cautious and pretty enough to make a poacher look twice for perhaps a sale to a fine lady. Its restraint may well prevent it from choosing freedom, choosing a future, choosing to move ahead without perfect knowledge of the future as Huyana has done -- and it has the power to share all of these reservations with its handler very directly. Not a true opposite, perhaps, but one which would both serve as a foil and serve to foil her in difficult decisions.
http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz241/HarperRegion/Sprites/438bonsly.png - Random!

Please pick your starting pokemon and make the following choices:
  • Primary OR Secondary TM set, if applicable
  • (1) Natural + (1) Hidden Ability; you may substitute a Natural Ability into the Hidden spot if applicable and if you desire
  • (2) Egg Moves
  • Gender
  • An optional nickname

hard choices! a timid sounding espurr sounds nice and all, and adapting to bonsly being not too good with water (plus another baby Pokemon) sounds cute... but then there's barboach who embodies Huyana's central water/earth struggle, hmmmm :0

i think ill go with the barbroach, hydration and oblivious. Water TMs first please! Egg moves Dragon Dance and Earth Power. Male named Chowilawu! Thank you for the choices!

I'd like the Lugia's pearl added to Chowilawu's held item please~ I'll work it in within a development pre-travels
