Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Sand crunched underfoot amid the wind whipping sand about, and the scattered conversations along the Lake shore that day. Crater Lake was fairly active during the calmer seasons, and this Fall had been no different as Denzil made his way through the moving crowd. His armor had been left at the Forge for this outing, though his stave rested in his left hand as an impromptu walking stick in the shifting soil.

He managed to find a clear stretch of sand a bit away from the Lake's edge and unrolled a simple reed mat onto the ground, which was immediately claimed by a violet rodent with large ears. Denzil gave the Nidoran a light pat on its spiny back before loosing the youngest member of their group from her sphere.

The tiny Sneasel rubbed her eye with the knuckle of one claw as she took form, burbling as she glanced about in wonder. This was the first time she had been to Crater Lake, or any lake for that matter, and it was an entirely new experience to the open road they had traveled together.

Taking her claw in hand, Denzil carefully led her to the water's edge where the wet sand was far more compact and easier to walk upon. Her feet made sharp indents in the sand on her way to chase the outgoing waves, beating a retreat each time the water swept forward to claim these small footprints for itself.

Denzil turned with a smile when a thump sent a shook the ground, a dozing Jacob slumped at the water's edge with his hooves dug into the warm sand to protect his precious mud. The red streak that was Ruby zipped to and fro overhead, skimming low over the water to trail her feet in sharp lines of spray.

Pharus had opted to remain in his sphere considering the bright sunlight, preferring the shadowed night to the brilliant day. Denzil sat nearby as Gemini made to show this massive blue thing that she had no fear, squealing to his side when an especially frothy wave washed over her feet.

They sat and watched as a cactus creature hopped past alongside a small girl, shaking a rough tune with the spined flowers on its head as they did so. After a bit he took a page from Jacob's book, and began digging into the wet sand and shaping a rough structure with his hands and a discarded stick.

Lucas was tired from the long journey from Edgewood to Crater Lake. It had taken him quite a long time to reach this location, but he came here because he had some hopes that he could obtain some rare Pokemon. However, now that he was here at Crater Lake he decided that it was best for him to simply relax and enjoy the time he could spend. He wasn’t exactly in rough shape for the winter, and whatever fire type pokemon he caught around here he could sell in Dedrius with ease.

As he walked the beach he managed to find a spot where there weren’t a lot of people. This would allow him to let his beloved team rest, relax, and enjoy this beautiful place without getting nervous. He wasn’t worried about most of his team, but he always took cautions when it came to Ashi. He managed to find a spot where only a few people and Pokemon were at.

Now that he was safely away from many of the people he pulled out the three Pokeballs that he had full. Dropping them to the ground he called up his entire pack. Ashi, Lugus, and Veteris all managed to form at roughly the same time. Ashi was the first to recover from the process with all her wits and she was quick to scan the area for any threats her hackles were up until she made certain that there were no threats that she had to protect her pack from. Then she visibly relaxed looking up at Lucas expectantly.

Veteris was the next to regain himself looking at Lucas he was quick to rush over and nuzzle him affectionately to which Lucas knelt carefully and scratched the little Stunky behind his ears. This was the sweet spot that the Stunky loved to have scratched. Lugus, on the other hand, seemed to be slightly nervous before he rushed into the shade of Lucas’ body. He was still new to the world, and while the large lake wouldn’t bother him in the slightest everything else was new. Lucas laughed softly gently running a hand along Lugus’ back “It is alright. I won’t let anything get you.” He looked to Ashi and Veteris next “You two can play or relax as you like. I don’t want either of you to cause problems though, and keep an eye on Lugus.” He said before adjusting his pokemon and himself to take off his boots and his pack.

Looking inside of it he was careful to observe the egg that was remaining inside of it. He had to be very careful with the egg it was the last egg he had in his care. This was a great relief to Lucas as he didn’t want to risk breaking the egg. Veteris looked to see the group that Denzil and his pokemon made. The one closest to him was the Mudbray that was napping in the sand. Veteris gave a soft cry of excitement and rushed towards the equine. This did not go unnoticed by Lucas who was careful to watch the reaction between the two pokemon.

Veteris didn’t rush in an aggressive manner, and instead he only bounded cheerfully towards the Mudbray. As he neared he slowed down sniffing and chirping softly for the Mudbray to hear him coming and so he wouldn’t spook the equine.

The young Sneasel had just toppled the latest of her Handler's sand towers with a happy grin when she turned at a sound. She gave a faint hiss and ducked behind Denzil's leg, a claw on his back and peeking around him to glare at the unknown furred creature. She glanced up when Denzil put his hand on her back and gave her smile, before looking over and watching this newcomer closely.

Jacob didn't acknowledge them at first or even move for that matter as the waves lapped up the sand to where his hooves remained buried before him. Dorian cracked open one red eye to keep them in sight, only to shake his head and resume his sunning on the reed mat. By this time the Pokecard in Denzil's hand had pulled up a rough data sheet on this curious 'Stunky', a Poison-Type like Dorian.

He kept his stave on the ground beside him but otherwise kept them in sight, peering back and seing a person standing nearby with a dusky-furred canine. Jacob slowlly lifted his head when a splash flecked water across his side two children playing some chasing game. He blinked bleerily for a moment before giving a yawn that threatened to swallow the entirety of the Lake, standing with a stretch of muddied limbs and turning about.

His attempt to trot further from the water was halted when the mudbray nearly stepped atop a small skunk chittering near the ground. He blinked twice before leaning down to nuzzle his snout against the creature's fur in curiousity and sniff at the stranger.

Ruby's most recent circuit of the Lake ended with a spray of water when she abruptly stop and straight straight into the air, trailing it with her somewhat to sprinkle down over the group. She arced once and came to a hover, zipping once around the newcomers and taking in the sight of the crawling insect hiding in the human's shadow before resuming her play atop the surface of the water. Denzil gave a light smile at his partner's assessment and waved the newcomers over, "There's plenty of room."

Lucas watched as Veteris met Jacob and was nervous. Veteris loved to hug everything and he wasn’t very particular about that. However, if he was given injury or insult then he would turn violent and volatile. So, if he did not like this pokemon that Lucas didn’t understand at first, but his Pokecard recorded and relayed that it was a Mudsbray. Yet, not much was known about this species other than the basics and the name. He was interested in the thing to be sure, but that was his poacher’s mind at work. He would not allow himself to be distracted however, and instead watched the scene carefully.

Veteris managed to avoid being stepped on with great ease and skill. Then he started to rub up against the muddy sides of Jacob’s front legs. He didn’t mind the muddy or sandy chips that came upon him, but he was happy to have someone to cuddle with. He was only too happy to let the equine pokemon snuffle him and he even arched his back and let his tail slowly glide across the muzzle of the equine.

Seeing the invitation was given Lucas made his way closer to the Denzil. Ashi was at his heels, and Lugus had quickly scaled his body and rested on his master’s shoulder. He watched the sky keeping his eyes on the flying insect pokemon that was fascinating and he really was blown away by the sight. He hadn’t seen much combat, or much of anything yet being that he was still new to the world.

As the two were at a respectful speaking range he did so “Greetings, I am sorry about Veteris over there.” He said gesturing to the skunk pokemon who was nuzzling and cuddling Jacob “He likes to cuddle, I also have to warn you that he has a very…volatile nature. If he’s hurt or insulted he will spray with all his might. I hope you will forgive me and him.” He said as a way of greeting.

Ashi who was at her Alpha’s heels looked to Gemini, and she did not look very pleased about this. She did not bare her fangs, she did not growl, but she was very wary in her body stance. She also did not allow herself to look away from either Gemini, or Denzil splitting her attention between the two with incredible speed.

Denzil’s reply was cut short when the red dragonfly swooped into a hover overhead, scattering loose sand about before her clawed feet latched to the top of her Handler’s head. Denzil’s head dipped forward under her weight before righting himself and looking up at her until his eyes threatened to disappear into his eyebrows. Ruby’s wings were drooping quite a bit and her breathing was heavier than usual.

Denzil gave her small head horns a pat and held up a red and white sphere, which recalled the flying insect in a beam of red energy. He gave a polite nod to the newcomers, “Denzil, that was Ruby that just flew in for a rest. Jacob there has the indifferent patience of a saint, so as long as your partner does not overly bother him there won’t be an issue.

The magenta rodent rolled over so that the spines on his back were angled in the direction of the strangers, “That’s Dorian, and this is Gemini. I didn’t catch your name, or those of your other two friends.” he added with a nod to the canine and climbing insect accompanying the man. ‘Gemini’ for her part ignored them to knock down Denzil’s most recent sand tower, fangs peeking out with a burbling giggle that could almost pass off as menacing. Almost. The Sneasel squealed just then as the water swept up and brushed the back of her foot, prompting her to dart to the safety of her Handler’s back.

While the young one openly glared at the big blue thing from the cover of Denzil’s side, Jacob had mostly finished his snuffling and planted his hooves into the soil. A loud thump later and the collapse of yet another sand tower marked the Mudbray’s chosen location for his current nap, leaving a modest indent in the sand as he began to gently snore.

As Ruby came flying in overhead Lugus looked up raising one of his little foreclaws to try and touch the beautiful red thing that flew over him. His little eyes said he was envious, that he wanted to fly himself. He wanted to be able to soar like that. As she was recalled he gave a couple chirp-like sounds that were sad in tone and he put his little claw back down his tiny wings buzzing on his back creating a humming sound as they did so. Still, he settled right back down and looked at the other human with curious tilts of his head this way and that.

Lucas, on the other hand, nodded his head to Denzil as he caught the name of the Yanma and the horse Pokemon that Veteris was getting to know better. Lucas smiled looking over at his little skunk “Well, once he’s done cuddling he will come and inspect the rest of you I am certain. He’s too curious by half, and it usually gets us into trouble.” He said simply as an explanation. Upon hearing he had left out some names Lucas cleared his throat “Oh sorry about that. I’m Luke.” He gently rubbed a foot against Ashi’s side “This little Beta here is Ashi and this.” He said patting Lugus on the head “Is Lugus, the baby of my group. It’s a pleasure to meet you Denzil. I am sorry if we spoiled your fun in the sun here.” He said in his best tone of friendliness.

The burbling giggle of Gemini caught both Ashi and Lugus’ attention and both Pokemon looked at her watching her one with wariness in her intent, the other with curiosity. Lugus wasn’t sure what to make of this little biped, but the sounds she made were interesting to hear. As she ran back to hide behind Denzil Lugus started to make the humming sound with his wings and body once more as if trying to match the sound, or create sound himself for fun. Ashi however, was unmoved and glad to see that this Sneasel wasn’t looking at her or her alpha. Ashi didn’t trust Sneasels for the most part, and had an old grudge against them. Still, her Alpha wasn’t reacting, so she couldn’t react either.

Over by Jacob Veteris was giving soft chirps to show he was sad that the Pokemon didn’t seem interested in him anymore, but then he noticed the other human and more pokemon that were around. Without waiting he bounded towards the group passing Dorian on his way and instead going straight up to Denzil chirping and trying to rub up along his leg opposite Gemini. With a soft Groan Lucas shook his head “Enough Veteris, you don’t have to cuddle with everyone you see. Besides what if this little Sneasel here doesn’t like you rubbing up against her master. We aren’t here for a fight.” Now Veteris looked to the Sneasel and started to sniff at her his tail flicking to and fro as if he was considering what to do about her.

Lucas shook his head again turning his attention back to Denzil “Again I apologize. So, tell me, where did you get Jacob. I haven’t seen a pokemon like him before. Did you catch him around these parts, or was he a gift?” He asked letting his great interest in pokemon show.

Tentatively, he reached out with a hand and rested it upon the excited skunk's head. When he was immediately doused in foul-smelling spray he smiled, and scratched lightly down Veteris' back. Gemini for her part seemed to take offense and grabbed his hand, placing it atop her own head and sitting back down with a huff.

She was moving to grab his other hand until he began scratching just under her 'feathered' ear, to which she leaned back with her eyes closed. Denzil's other hand was now free to greet the curious Stunky again. The clicking of Lugus caught his eye, and he made a note of seeing if Ruby would fly the little bug around a bit after she had cooled off, and voiced his idea to Lucas a moment later.

"A bit of both to be honest" he replied, his scratching now bringing the baby Sneasel into a near slumber. "On my first task as a Handler, we were helping escort someone to the next settlement South of here. We were about halfway there when a pair of hounds had chased Jacob across our path, and from the state of them it was clear that they were both starving and exhausted."

The Mudbray in question gave a sleepy snort and send sand scattering into the water's edge. "I managed to capture at least one of them and Jacob joined soon after. So he was captured I'd say, but he was no less a gift than the rest of my family." Dorian gave what might have been a light huff at that, but his stance seemed to relax a bit from where he was sunning himself.

Denzil gave a knowing look towards the Nidoran before shifting to the newcomers. "The shore is a big place, if you want to sit and share your story."

When Denzil started to pet him and scratch down Veteris’ back the little skunk Pokemon gave grateful chirps of pleasure and enjoyment. He arched his back to allow Denzil’s fingers to find the sweet spots on his back. When Gemini took the hand that was giving him such pleasure, however, Veteris gave a soft mournful squeak that sounded sad and dejected. Yet, he changed his tone right around when Denzil’s other hand came to pet and scratch him.

Lugus decided that it was safe to climb down, and he did so crawling down Lucas’ back to stand next to Ashi who was still on guard. Lucas heard the idea that Denzil voiced and he looked at the little baby Nincada “I think that Lugus would love that.” He said Pokemon down at his baby Pokemon that was slowly approaching the baby Sneasel. Looking at her curiously as he hadn’t seen a Sneasel before and she chirped which he could also do.

Lucas listened intently to the story and he smiled looking over to where the Mudbray was sleeping and gave that soft snort. He smiled fondly as he heard the word family and then looked down to Ashi, Veteris, and Lugus. They were his family, or at least the only family that he had now. He had no idea where his sister was, and no idea if his brother was even alive or dead after that night so long ago. At the end of the story, he nodded “Yes I can see how it is both. Well, you and Jacob are lucky to have found each other.”

When he heard the invitation to tell his story Lucas sat down slowly. He had to think about what he was going to say. He knew very well that being a Pokemon Poacher was not a good thing and that he could indeed be arrested. So, he decided to change it up. As soon as he sat down Veteris rushed into his lap and began to give soft almost purring sounds while Lucas scratched the little Pokemon's belly, and chin. Ashi moved closer laying against her Alpha’s leg.

Clearing his throat Lucas began “Well, my story doesn’t start being interesting until I was a bit older. I was born in Fough Place to a decently talented Smith. My Older brother stayed trying to learn the craft, and my sister married into another family moving away quickly. My father was scum, and he burned our house down. My older brother threw me out of a window and into the river that worked our wheel which in turn worked our billows. When I woke up I was in Edgewood.” Ashi nuzzled her head against Luke’s knee and he pats her head in response “I was found by a woodsman. He took over raising me. He died in a horrible accident only this past year. Ashi and Veteris here were his Pokemon, and I worked with them, so I took them with me. I couldn’t leave them in the wild. Lugus here is the first Pokemon I ever caught on my own because I hatched him from an egg I found. Well, I have spent my whole life in and around the Edgewood, Fough Place, and Dedrius. So, I have decided that I want to see the rest of the world so, here I am and that’s my story.” He said finishing this off with a soft spreading of his arms before he went back to petting both Veteris and Ashi.

Denzil was silent for several moments as he absorbed what the man had just shared with him, listening to the water lapping up into the sand and the faintly snoring Mudbray. In a way the two Handlers were cut from the same cloth if the story rung true, not the least of which that they both grew into the field of metalcraft. “I think I remember seeing you about once or twice. We’ve had to make a few runs up to Fough Place over the years to pick a specific material or schematic for commissions.

He closed his eyes with a nod, “My condolences on your mentor’s passing, it could not have been easy.” Silence reigned once again with the breeze whipping the sand to and fro around them. At the mention of taking the two creatures with him instead of merely leaving them behind, the blacksmith looked upon Lucus with a new aire of respect due in no small part to the affection Ashi was directing towards her ‘Alpha’.

Denzil lowered his voice slightly, as Gemini was all-but asleep in his arms by this point. He considered asking what happened to the man’s birth father but bit his tongue on the matter, instead returning the recount of his own life. “In a way, I had quite a few siblings growing up, ” he began slowly, picking his words carefully.

Farthest back as I can remember was the orphanage, though I couldn’t tell you where the blazes it sat at. I just remember it being overly crowded, cold, and with a sour matron that could have pickled lemons just by biting them.” He paused to scratch at his head in thought, trying to recall the details of events so long ago. “Soon as I was old enough, I climbed the walls and beat it for anywhere but there, eventually ending up near Miramossa’s outskirts. I don’t remember much beyond the landscape seeming to shift constantly in the City itself, but I didn’t explore too far before the weather turned cold.

He stopped when the Sneasel in his arms gave a mighty yawn and blinked herself awake, mismatched eyes gazing up at him from where she lay curled up. The weathered Navdian smiled and pulled her closer, prompting Gemini to give a squeak and clamber up to stand on his shoulders and watch over the top of his head. “Traveled South after that to follow the warm air and wound up in the Crater, where I scavenged what I could until a fat merchant crossed my path. I was wandering about looking for any dropped fruit or tossed out bread when this pompous…anyway, we bumped into each other, took one look at me and yelled for the Guard. Went so far as to claim that I had tried to rob him, once he got a good look at my torn clothes and bare feet.

He stopped to pinch the bridge of his nose before continuing, the memories fresher now, “I remember being grabbed, pulling away and the man yanking some thin blade from his belt. Cheap piece of garbage, probably more for show than actually being useful,” He fought to keep the disdain from his features, “I grabbed a knife off of a stand behind me and blocked his swing, but by that point the Guards had showed up and suddenly I was the ‘deranged urchin’.” Denzil gave a bemused chuckle after a moment, giving a sigh and looking back towards Navdia.

Did me a favor, even if it didn’t seem like it at the time. The noise brought out the owner of the stall and in lue of being locked up, he said he’d take me on as a worker to pay off the dagger I had taken. The man was a crotchety, bitter, impatient son of an Onix named Kurt, and that forge became my life for almost twenty years. ” Despite his words, Denzil’s tone held a hint of fondness, like one reflecting on a sorely-missed family member. “He took me in, giving no quarter mind you, and worked my bones down to the very grit in instilling what it was to be a Blacksmith. It took some time but it finally sank in, I had a home, a craft, and in time a family.” His eyes flicked from Gemini, to Dorian, to Jacob, and to the spheres tucked into his vest.

Artisans, especially those that barter together for supplies and services, tend to become very close-knit and so I was lucky enough to be fostered in a few skills I had missed out on the road. The elderly woman who sold vegetables taught me how to read and speak ‘properly’, the married couple running the clothing shop showed me how to do small repairs to my own clothing and armor, and….well, I was fortunate.

He paused and gave an apologetic shrug for his rambling, taking a breath and trying to shorten the story a bit. “Kurt brought Ruby into my life, Gemini hatched from an egg I didn’t even know had been slipped into my bag, and everything has been slowly falling into place since.” Denzil finally stopped and took a breath, it felt oddly relieving to finally speak on such things, even for a moment.

Now that he heard the words aloud he had to agree, they truly were lucky to have found each other. With the cooling temperate near the Lake he pulled a sphere from his vest, thumbing the button and releasing a brilliantly crimson dragonfly into the air. “Up for showing the little one how to kiss the sky?” he asked with a nod towards Lugus, to which Ruby flit over to the Nincada and held out her six clawed feet. Denzil stood with a stretch of his back and glanced about, noting that there were a few more of the small sand towers now. “You’ve really been busy, haven’t you?” He asked, to which Geminin simply took about in confusion at the influx of sand castles nearby.

Lucas snapped his head up as he heard that Denzil thought he had seen him once or twice back in what Lucas referred to as “The before times” in his private thoughts. He didn’t have very many memories of that time, possibly because of some head trauma that he had suffered when he was thrown into the river and spent the night traveling down it to where he was found. Still, he didn’t have many memories so hearing this bit about being recognized from his life before he met his master was a shock. Presently, he muttered only just able to be heard “Well, that’s good. I’m glad someone remembers my life before my father burned down our home, and my brother threw me out a window.” He wasn’t sure if Denzil heard him, but Ashi clearly did and she nuzzled him more affectionately.

The condolences of Denzil about his mentor only made Lucas wave his hand “He taught me many things, and a valuable trade that I can use to survive, but he was a monster. Taking Ashi and Veteris was easy because I wasn’t going to be him. He was terrible to them, but they knew that I wasn’t like him. So, they were only too happy to come along with me.” He said petting Ashi’s head and scratching Veteris’ belly more affectionately. The two Pokemon seemed quite happy to be loved on in this fashion, but Ashi didn’t take her eyes off of Denzil. Almost as if she was prepared for him to make a move against Lucas, and she would be sure to attack if needed.

Lucas listened to the story that was being told and he had to admit it seemed like Denzil had just as hard of a time as he himself. Then again, the other man had experienced a lot more of the world than he had. He only stayed in three places really and only knew how to interact with those three places and the people of them. Even if it wasn’t much. This was as far as he had traveled ever in his life and he was also determined to keep going and traveling. He needed to gather a full pack, and once he had them then he could engage in true poaching work. Right now, he was scraping by on what easily acquired Pokemon that he could gather and sell. This was not how a true poacher was supposed to be nor how he was supposed to function. Still, there was nothing he could do about it now. He didn’t have the strength his master had, he didn’t have the years of experience, and he didn’t want to be like his former master which meant his captures would have to be less violent.

He snapped back to the story that was being told to him around the part where Kurt had brought Ruby into Denzil’s life. He nodded his head smiling warmly leaning back slightly “Well, thank you for sharing your story with me. Really it is an honor.” He watched as Denzil pulled out the sphere and he smiled wider than before. He nodded his head as the crimson Dragonfly appeared in the air. Lugus was instantly aware of the flying bug and he gave soft chirps and crickets of delight to have her in his sight again. Lucas nodded his head slowly, so he didn’t senPokemonittle cicada-like pokemon flying off of his head. He carefully held out Lugus towards the beautiful crimson dragonfly so that she could carry Lugus in her six clawed feet and carry him through the sky. “Here, you take my Lugus and show him the view, but please do be careful with him. Lugus you behave yourself, and do not give this lovely Ruby any problems. Do you hear me?” Lugus nodded his head slowly and stood still so Ruby could take him.

Once he was taken and in the air, he looked to Denzil at the mention of being busy and then looked around to see all of the sand castles nearby. Ashi slowly growled low in her throat her hackles rising. She didn’t like these sand castles. For whatever reasons her instincts told her that she and her alpha were not safe, and she was not going to let it stand. Veteris also seemed to be of a similar mind as he hissed rather loudly his tail raised ready to either spray or fight. Looking from Gemini to the sand castles Lucas vaguely recalled something about something. Presently he said “I don’t recall that many sand castles before…. She has been with you the whole time since I arrived. Still, I don’t remember having to pass that many sand castles.” He said with some doubt in his voice as he looked at them his hands slowly moving behind his back to where he kept his knives, but he would not go to grip them or draw them. He was not sure what was going on here, but Ashi’s instincts had saved them in the past and he would not discount them.

Denzil quirked a brow at the man’s mumbling, unable to clearly make out the words. His brow furrowed sharply at the mention of Ashi and Veteris’ mistreatment, turning his gaze to them for a long moment. He kept his thoughts to himself for the time being, however.

Once Lugus was secured in her claws, Ruby rose into a hover and shot off in a winding arc over the sand. She made an easy left bank that took them over the water and rose into a climb that brought them far overhead. She hovered in the high winds for a moment before stiffening her wings and coiling into a spiraling glide that brought them to just above the surface of the Lake itself. Her wings flared to life and she zoomed about so that Lugus could trail his feet over the surface of the water before she banked to the side and made another pass back over to the others at the Lake shore.

At the man’s words Denzil’s brow furrowed, turning to Gemini who too was eying the sandcastles strangely. “You didn’t make these?” She shook her head in response, her back claws tightening on his shoulders as the other creatures seemed to go on alert. Glancing about confirmed that Dorian and Jacob were still asleep, so that ruled them out, and most of the other people enjoying the water had moved on some time ago.

His new acquaintance was right, now only were there more of the sand structures, but they seemed to have come closer to their position in the time it had taken them to share stories. By then Ruby and Lugus had returned, and Denzil noticed that despite her buzzing wings flinging the loose sand about, the castles remained standing.

A flicker of memory made him retrieve the oval card from inside his vest and expand it, his suspicions confirmed when a crude drawing appeared on the parchment. He turned it over so that Lucus could see it and carefully gestured towards the water with his head. The illustration showed a mound of sand dotted with pebbles, with a tunnel-like mouth below two pebble-eyes. A small shovel was sticking out from the top of its head, matching those on some of the sandcastles nearby. “Sandyghast” he mouthed silently.

Denzil had stepped over most of the sandy mounds between them and the water when a small ‘castle’ suddenly moved and latched onto his leg, causing the man to cry out as a wave of fierce cold shot through his body. He knew this cold well, it was the same chill Pharus caused when he used to feed on his energy to stay awake during the day. Fighting the shivers threatening to shake his leg apart, he turned to see that several of the mounds were now moving closer to them.

He was reaching for his stave only to remember that it was laying near Dorian, and was struggling to free his leg of the hungry Ghost when a different wave of cold struck the ground. A trio of frozen ‘rocks’ lay embedded in the sand, steaming in the desert sun, when Gemini landed on her feet and snarled at the pile of sand climbing her ‘papa’s’ leg.

Denzil gave a grateful nod to the Sneasel and her attempt at using Avalanche, using the distraction to shake the pile of sand from his leg, grabbing her up despite her protests and returning to the group. “We’ve got company!” his shout roused the Nidoran from his sunning, fangs chittering and poisoned spines rattling a challenge to the creeping swarm. Jacob… gave a snort and rolled over in his sleep, splashing several Sandyghast and driving them away from the water.

Good job, Jacob.” he said ruefully while he grabbed his stave from the sand and swept it outward to drive the creatures back. Those that made contact burst into sand only to reform a moment later. 'This is bad, Ghosts don’t have a physical body. We’ll have to be careful or we’ll just wear ourselves out.'

A prismatic beam from above cut a line between the encroaching Ghosts and the group, Ruby flitting into a hover beside them with Lugus securely in her claws. Gemini screeched in frustration as her targets kept reforming again and again despite her Scratches, hissing loudly. The first positive sign came a moment later when Dorian’s horned Peck drove one of the creatures back with a yelp, the first audible sound made by the Sandyghast since they began to swarm.

Denzil looked to Lucus with stave in hand, directing Ruby to cover the newcomers for now until they could all either drive the wild creatures back or escape.

Lugus was chirping away happily as he was carried over the water and gently clawed the water as they passed over it. He was enjoying the flight immensely and the little baby Pokemon longed for the ability to fly himself. Dragging his claw through the lake’s surface he made the slices through the crystal-clear surface, only to stop and look at his passing reflecting giving more chirps this time of greeting to the other nincada.

Meanwhile, Lucas nodded his head slowly as his mind caught up with him and he realized that he was right to be suspicious. Glancing over at the other human Lucas noticed that he was retrieving the oval card that was known as a Pokecard. This brought Lucas’ attention to his second necklace which only held the Pokecard. He fished it out and pointed it at the first sand castle that he could see. This one turned out to be indeed a sand mound that Gemini had built. He pointed to another one and the card went to work. Soon enough he had a drawing of a mound of sand with a shovel, a tunnel mouth, and pebble eyes. Blinking in surprise Lucas realized that he had never seen this kind of Pokemon before, and he wondered if it was a Pokemon that was only native to this place. Looking he met the eyes of Denzil nodding his head in confirmation that he understood. The one thing that he did know was that these Pokemon were ghost Pokemon, and that meant that Lucas didn’t have to worry.

He was distracted by the fact that two sand castles were moving closer towards his legs. Lucas glanced over to see that Denzil and his Pokemon were too close, and he wasn’t sure if the move that he was thinking of using would hurt them. Still, he couldn’t allow these sand Castle’s to move towards him and touch him. He did know about the way that Ghost Pokemon drew power and life from the living. He would not allow himself to fall prey to that kind of tactic. Clearing his throat, he said, “I am sorry in advance of this.” He said this to Denzil before he looked at his two Pokemon “Ashi, Veteris Dark Pulse!” The two Dark-type Pokemon started to gather dark energy and then they released it in a wave that shot out from both of them. The pulse of dark energy surged around Lucas and Denzil and this bought them a good amount of breathing room.

While he was doing this, he hadn’t noticed anything that Denzil had done, nor Jacob although he had heard the “Good job, Jacob” comment. He looked over at the earth horse and he nodded his head slowly as he started to carefully back away towards the water’s edge. “If we can get to the water’s edge then we should at least be able to keep an escape route clear.” He said as he looked to Ashi and Veteris “Use Snarl in order to create a path to Jacob.” He told his two pokemon. Ashi launched herself at the nearest pair of sand castles and gave a deep vicious snarl that caused the two sand castles to give cries of pain and scamper away rather quickly. Veteris on the other hand used his Snarl attack to keep the Sandyghast from coming between Lucas and Denzil.

When Ruby arrived to hover near them on this time Lugus saw that one Sandyghast was coming up on Lucas’ blindside. He gave a chirp of alarm forcing Ruby to let him go, and when he was able to fall to the ground he skittered towards the sand-castle pokemon. His right claw came up glowing black and purple and he slashed it across the Ghost pokemon causing it to collapse only to reform and slither off chattering in fear. Now he started to Follow Lucas, and the rest slowly easing back to the giant sleeping Jacob.

Denzil had barely turned to ask why he would apologize, when a rush of wind and shadowed blue energy swept over him and the others. There was a brief sensation of being forced through a keyhole headfirst before it passed, leaving the Blacksmith somewhat dazed. Looking about, he saw that while they were unharmed by the Pulse, their new ‘friends’ did not take to the welcome at all.

Jacob rose to his hooves shakily, giving a wide yawn that threatened to escape his face. Blinking away sleep he promptly sat down upon the sand while he looked about at the newcomers, sitting directly onto a Sandyghast attempting to sneak from behind. The Mudbray blinked in confusion and turned to investigate where the sudden spray of sand had come from, while it reformed several feet away with the rest of its group. Denzil gave a grateful nod when the path was cleared and pulled a red and white sphere from his vest, retrieving a sitting Jacob before the sandy swarm could fully engulf him. The move was not popular. The earthen ghosts turned with deep frowns and made to surround them once again.

Dorian had since taken up position near Lucas and jabbed his horn at the sand piles that crept close, making liberal use of Peck. The path was clear for a good stretch of coastline thanks to the efforts of Ashi and Veteris, though the swarm was closing fast.

Denzil by this point was nearly snarling himself. Each time he managed to spread one of the living sand mounds with the stave or a kick, they regrouped and advanced as though he had done nothing at all. “At least someone is making an impact” he mused to himself, watching Ruby use Giga Drain to down one of the creatures and give it a taste of having their energy stolen.

A loud swear escaped his lips when a Sandyghast launched from the ground towards his face, sputtering and spitting out sand when his punch dissipated the Ghost’s form. His hand immediately went numb and resulted in another less than polite utterance.

Ok, bad move. He shook feeling back into his hand and stepped back until his boots were in the water. Dorian let loose a sphere of compressed water from his fanged mouth and sent a Sandyghast skidding back a bit. It no longer had loose soil falling from its form, but rather stood with a darker shade than it’s fellows while the water soaked it through.

Come on!” he called to Lucas, making for the rocky outcrop near the end of the beach. He had almost made it to the crest where the water lapped up over the rocks when he realized that Dorian was pawing at the ground, refusing to move. Not now

The little Nidoran had a notable stubborn streak when it came to fighting in numbers. Against a smaller group he would back off and watch, but if outnumbered… No sooner had that thought come into being did Dorian dig in and rattle a challenge to the encroaching swarm.

Denzil took count of their opponents, and promptly abandoned that line of thinking when it crested into the twenties. There were just too many of them for an all out brawl, and they’d likely be drained into husks as soon as they were exhausted by the sheer numbers. They needed another tactic before they were pushed into the Lake itself./indent]

[indent]The outcrop wasn’t far now, and he saw the waves lapping over the small land ‘bridge’ separating the granite from the beach. If they could get there the water may be able to act as a barrier, even for a time. They certainly didn’t take well to Dorian’s water works, and generally avoided the waves for now.

Gemini shrieked in frustration at the sand castles that refused to stay scattered, and amidst her screaming there was a waver in her shadow. Claws clenched into fists she gave a final shriek to the sky, a pulse of dark energy radiating out from the shadowed sand at her feet. The approaching Sandghast squealed and drew back at the display, at least for a moment.

Denzil froze as the scene registered, rushing to snatch the Sneasel up into his arms while she stood panting, stopping long enough to wave on Lucas to the outcrop. Gemini made a querying noise and spit back over his shoulder at the glaring sand mounds. It was only after her Handler was near the ‘bridge’ with Ruby did he look down with a questioning look “When did you learn that?” Gemini’s response was to stick her tongue out at him and clamber back onto his shoulders. They could see that Dorian was backing up to follow the group but slowly, refusing to turn and expose his back to the incoming foes.

Lucas was very concerned with the way his Pokemon's attack would affect the new allies that he had. He recalled that during his trek through the Edgewood his pair of Pokemon were able to use these attacks without hurting each other. He wasn’t sure what the real reason was behind this amazing little fact, but he wasn’t sure that it applied to these newly made friends. He was very glad that it did, however, apply to them, and that they weren’t harmed by the attack that was used to keep all of them safe. These ghost Pokemon were no fans of the dark attack that he was capable of using, and that was all the better for the little band of newly met friends. Lucas didn’t have time to watch what Jacob was doing, and certainly couldn’t be bothered to pay much attention.

He was far too busy trying to keep track of the way things were going, and the ghost Pokemon that were closing in around them. There were simply too many to fight, but if they could get to the lake, or some rocks then perhaps they could get away. He looked back to the lake and that was the obvious choice, but he wasn’t sure how they would be able to get away. After all, his swimming wasn’t very good, but he could survive the Logger Sea. Yet, he had to worry about Denzil and how he would get away. With a snarl of annoyance, he looked around trying to figure out where he could go.

Ashi and Veteris noticed how effective their Dark pulse attacks were and they kept it up driving back the ghosts that would get closer to their alpha. Lugus, on the other hand, would lunge in with his claws glowing purple and black with his night slash attack. Chattering angrily at the sand castles because they were making his papa angry. He stood up on his back feet raising his claws and chattering trying to seem big and terrifying. Ashi noticed this and gave a loud bark of admonishment in order to snap Lugus back to reality and he skittered back towards Lucas climbing up his leg and holding onto his back.

Lucas shook his head in discouragement, but he would settle Ashi later. After all, Lugus was a baby, and he shouldn’t be getting into fights like this. He glanced down to see a Sandyghast and kicked out at it smashing it to pieces spraying the sand everywhere. Of course, this wouldn’t solve his problem completely, but he wasn’t helpless. He’d tangled with ghost Pokemon once or twice and knew how they worked so he wasn’t about to let one get over on him.

Lucas felt the water lapping at his boots and that was more than he needed. Lugus saw the water and he climbed up a bit higher. He didn’t mind water, but at the same time, he didn’t want to be in the way. Hearing Denzil’s call Lucas looked back and saw just where the other youth had in mind for their escape route. He knew well that it was the best chance they got, and he gave a shrill whistle to let both Ashi and Veteris know he was on the move. Ashi snapped her gaze over to her alpha and then gave a bark to Veteris sending him towards Lucas.

Veteris did as he was told and launched his Dark Pulse at various ghosts who were getting too close to his alpha. Ashi slowly backed towards where Lucas was going as she could see where he was heading. This was a smart move and she was only too happy to make it; heading off that way. As she backed up she kept looking over her shoulder to make sure that she was going in the direction that she needed to be going in. It was at this point that she passed by the little Nidoran male seeing that he was determined to stand his ground before the foe no matter how many there were. Ashi couldn’t deny that she was impressed with him. Standing before the foe alone.

Seeing that the Nidoran wasn’t going to back off without a fight Ashi wasn’t going to either. She stomped her paws into the sand standing next to the poison point Pokemon. She lifted her lips exposing all of her sharp teeth and let loose a vicious sounding snarl. This snarl was not any ordinary kind of snarl, but it was an attack. The sound and impact of this snarl spread out towards a pair of the sand castle ghosts that were closing in on them. They shattered and then reformed scurrying away from the pair clearly very scared and hurt by what had just happened to them. She stood shoulder to shoulder with the poison point Pokemon, as she wouldn’t show any less bravado than he was, and she wouldn’t allow herself to be seen as less willing to protect her alpha than he was.

Lucas was too busy moving to really notice and Veteris was quick to keep the sandyghast from his alpha while Ashi was occupied. He knew well what his role was when Ashi was busy or absent from Lucas’ side. He may be submissive to Ashi, and likely Lugus as well when he grew up, but he was still a fighter. He still had learned how to survive and fight under the vicious whip of Lucas’ master Thomas the Pokemon poacher who had no uses for Pokemon that were worthless; at least as defined by him. With another dark pulse, he sent two more of the sand ghosts scurrying away as fast as they possibly could. Lucas watched his Pokemon carefully because he wanted to be sure they weren’t going to exhaust themselves too quickly.

Veteris, Lugus, and Lucas were just as shocked by the sight of Gemini being able to use Dark pulse, even if it was so quickly gone, and wasn’t near the strength of Ashi or Veteris’ being that it was new. Still, Lucas nodded his head in approval smiling at the little Sneasel. He and Veteris rushed with Denzil towards the outcropping and he looked back over his shoulder and swore “ASHI! No heroes!” Ashi glanced back over her shoulder and nodded her head once to show that she understood. She started to move back with Dorian letting out snarls and dark pulses as she moved. Lucas frowned and looked to Veteris, “You create an opening for her to get to this outcropping. Again, no heroes.” Veteris nodded and gave himself about a dozen paces between Ashi, Dorian and the outcropping.

As the Sandygasts moved towards Ashi and Veteris they both launched either Dark Pulses and Snarls at ghosts that dared to get too close to them. Veteris launched attacks in both directions in order to keep himself in a circle that wasn’t filled with sand castle ghosts. Lucas jumped up on the outcropping and looked back to his Pokemon “HERE!” he bellowed snapping his fingers. Ashi gave a snarl and nipped at Dorian to try and signal to him that they had to back up faster. She did just that leaping back slightly launching a dark pulse and then hopping backwards again. Veteris slowly moved to the outcropping snarling and dark pulsing anything that got too close to him.

Lucas bit down on the inside of his cheek as he was clearly trying not to let his nerves and fears get the best of him, but he walked on the rocks back and forth like a caged or wounded animal.

The glaring Sneasel now on his shoulder hopped off when another Ghost slithered close, clawed fist leaving a shadowy haze in its wake as she brought the Throat Chop down directly onto her foe’s head. The Sandygast retreated with a squeal and vanished amid the mass of shifting bodies chasing t he humans and their teams. Denzil’s arms were moving on their own as he stabbed with the blade of his stave time and again, his mind drawing back to Dorian and hoping he would hurry up.

It wasn’t that the Nidroan was prideful, he himself had made that assumption long before. It was the challenge. Dorian was anything if not honorable in his own infuriating way, and refused to strike a group smaller than his own. Against larger odds something would awaken in his heart, an inner fire that refused to back down until the scales had tipped even. It was this same honor that threatened to get him drained by living sand castles. “Dorian, come on! We need you!

A moment’s hesitation and a stiffening of back spines held Dorian in place for a heart’s beat, until he was backing alongside Ashi and driving the mob back with jabs from his horn. That same horn was nearly turned toward the Poochyena when she nipped him, lines blurred in the heat of batttle until he recognized her and held his attack. They made it to the outcropping and rejoined the group, but the toll and heat of the desert sun had been taken on the warriors. Dorian was gleaming with sweat and panting heavily, even as he stood at the stone ‘bridge’ and used it as a bottleneck to drive approaching Sandygast back or into the water.

Denzil looked about as they finally had room to breathe, noting that while the rocky outcrop was by no means small it didn’t offer a direct exit. Water splashed up on two sides, while another occupied the ‘bridge’. The final side was a steep incline of rocks that looked more like discarded boulders than a natural feature of the land. He scratched at the back of his head, about as lost as a Bidoof who’d been told to bite trees in reverse. The Sandygast had always been under the sand and a nuisance now and again, but never before in these numbers or as aggressive as the siege they were facing now.

He used the reprieve to pull his Pokecard back out and scanned into the mob, searching for any clue as to what was happening here. Sandygast, borne of grudges that seep into the sand such as from Pokemon defeated in battle. Energy is drained from its victims with its mouth, and can enthrall humans who take its shovel. These thralls are then used to add sand to the Pokemon’s body so that it may become bigger.

A chill ran down his spine as he read those words, eyes slowly returning to the swarm just beyond their modest defenses. It might have been the Pokecard entry on his thoughts, or the haze of the day’s heat playing tricks with his mind, but he thought he saw shambling forms amid the shin-high piles of ghostly soil.

Ruby, whom had been sticking close to his shoulder since regrouping, gave a nod when he relayed his concerns. She took off with a loud buzzing of her wings and swept over the swarm in a crimson blur, making a full circuit before arcing back to the outcrop. Denzil’s worry was confirmed when she tugged on his vest and gave a nod of her head. There were indeed people among the ghosts. It was safe to assume that they were captured and possibly enthralled by the Sandygast, or involved in this attack somehow.

He shared this discovery with Lucas while he directed Ruby to make a second circuit about the Lake itself, the Yanma blurring out over the water and disappearing from sight. Several moments passed before she returned with all speed, her wingbeats showering water spray over the group. From her excited buzzing it was clear that she had found something, and kept gesturing further out into the Lake and the direction she had just come from.
