Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

{0.6 EXP! Sorry it took so long, I like to read travels from the beginning when I haven't worked with them before}

The mudbray didn't understand safety so much as see the open pathway to run and bolt beyond the humans. It did slow to a canter about fifty feet beyond them near the bend of a foothill. Sides heaving, sweat slicked down its back and forelegs, it looked beaten down and bruised. It peered uncertainly back toward where the two canines awaited, caught up by the humans. The canines in question tossed their heads with frustration. The houndour had her teeth bared, fire licking her maw. Smoke trilled up the sides of her face, giving her an eerie cast. She bent low and snapped her teeth loudly, challenging.

The poochyena was less aggravated, staying a step behind its counterpart with its tail low between its legs. Ruby's interference had both creatures rear back and bound to the right, directly into the rocky opening Denzil had offered. Celene pursed her lips. She may have been friendly to Denzil, who was tasked with accompanying her to Doran, but she wasn't an overly warm and merciful person. The tight lines around her mouth and eyes argued with the cold understanding that pokemon die, it's just the way of the world. "If we go out of our way to take in these scavengers it'll cause problems later on." She pointed out. Her fingers hovered over her own pokeballs out of habit.

Finally, her eyes gave way. They softened just a little around the edges. The poochyena had patches of bare skin where malnutrition and strife wore at the fur. The houndour, better suited to heat if not to the desert, looked slightly less manged but had a few scars around her jaws and throat. She dashed past the humans into the edges of the riverbed, then trotted in a circle, facing the humans once again. The poochyena watched her back, yellow eyes wide. "If we succeed, you'll take care of them. If you want to go so far as to pick up strays, you better be prepared for the consequences." She snapped her fingers and Patch bounded over, a little worn but still energetic enough to assist.

"Keep pace with them and don't let them leave the riverbed. Quick attack if they try, but don't step into it yourself. Your skill lies in speed and we don't want you bogged down by the clay." She cut her voice low and even, as not to carry. Patch nodded and made a high pitched assent, then bounded off to do her handler's bidding. Serafina stayed back until ordered. "I'll help where I can." She stepped to his left and bent her knees, ready to do what was necessary. But she clearly left Denzil in control of the situation. Perhaps she wanted to make sure he could handle his own. Perhaps she didn't want to grow attached to the beasts and winning them would go far to do so.

Maybe she was just tired from the day and wanted to move on, but gave deference in light of her whole "I'm actually a villain" spiel. Whatever her reasons, Denzil was up. The mudbray kept out of the way, exhausted and trying to catch its breath a ways off. It would remain so long as it wasn't chased, too tuckered out to do anything at all. Its sides trembled with fear and shock even so.

Denzil held a hand behind his back and gave what he hoped was a reassuring wave towards the muddy donkey. The flames licking up along the wild hound's face confirmed his suspicions, a Fire-Type. While he had a mild tolerance for heat from living in Navdia and working at the forge fires, a creature's natural flame was nothing to take lightly. He would have to be careful, especially for Ruby's sake.

His grip tightened on the haft of his stave, eyes noting the blade reflecting the sun's light onto the sand in a faint rainbow prism. The fire hound's aggressive stance showed her as the immediate threat, especially if it came down to a literal firefight.

The dusky canine to the back was another story, the submissive demeaner and the cowering tail showing that it viewed the louder of the pair as its alpha. If they were able to weaken her, then the Poochyena may either fall in line or take off for the hills. Sand flew into the air when Ruby's Signal Beam duo struck the ground, driving the wild pair through the narrow rocky outcrop.

Their hunger a riding factor, they did not go far before turning about and putting the group back in their sights. "If I cannot, then I will find someone who can." he replied resolute, exiting the passage with Ruby hovering overhead.

Seeing Celene's preparations eased his thoughts somewhat, allowing him to turn them towards the matter at hand. With Patch maintaining the riverbed's boundary that would minimize the risk of the pair taking off or worse, circling around to take them by surprise. The warped and cracked field of clay was still a few feet back and the pair would need at least another push to drive them back into the trap.

Catching the sunlight reflecting off the stave's blade gave him an idea. He carefully angled the blade so that the reflected light would be angled towards the Houndour's narrowed eyes. Ruby's prismatic beam struck twice more, once near the Poochyena as a spook tactic while the second was a direct attack aimed at the (hopefully) distracted Houndour.

Ruby's clear wings pulsed lightly for a the span of a heart's beat, her movements growing swifter even as she climbed higher and surveyed the situation. Denzil moved quickly through the pass and set himself to the side, positioned to help box in the two stragglers.

{.6 exp! -- thanks for being so patient with me, ama!}

While Denzil’s attempt at blinding the Houndour was a smart move, it definitely didn’t work completely. As Ruby’s first signal beam hit the sand next to the Poochyena, the little hound yipped in nerves and bounced back. His tail was still down and between his legs as his bright eyes glanced over nervously to the alpha of the pair. Houndour was, by all means, not giving up. Her teeth were sharp and the fire licked out of her maws, and she was not happy. She was definitely not happy that this thing in front of her had tried to stop her from her dinner.

Denzil’s idea was a smart one; with the sun reflecting against the metal of his staff, the Houndour was just momentarily blinded. Not enough that the hound didn’t see the start of the signal beam, of course; by the time the slivers of purples, blues and yellows hit her, she was already backtracking. Not enough to be where Denzil wanted her to be, but she was getting there.

But the Houndour was definitely not going to go without a fight. The Poochyena looked a bit skittish on the side, tucked between the clay and his aggressive partner, but the Houndour wasn’t done. Those flames that licked her maws were the tease of an ember that would, give or take, be aimed towards the dragonfly. Despite not being as fast, the Dark Pokemon still had a well aimed throw. She threw her head back and as she tossed it forwards, spots of freckled yellow-orange bits came from between her teeth. Even if they missed Ruby, they’d be a good distraction for her own movements.

If anything, the ember was used as a scare tactic. It didn’t hit Ruby – she was far too fast, and even from the ground, the Houndour knew that. It was why she used the movement. Once the embers were thrown, though, the dark hound allowed herself to do the next best move: smog. The dark purple poison oozed out of her mouth and started to fill the valley, reaching to the far stretches of the area. Every on field Pokemon would be hit.

This marked the perfect time for the Poochyena to move. Despite the crippling pain from the poison he now felt, he still moved. He headed towards the Pachirisu. Patch had agreed on its handler’s words, and would try to coral the wild Pokemon as such. Unlike the Poochyena, who had been hit by the smog, the electric squirrel Pokemon was reared up and ready to go. Quick attack hit the Poochyena head on.

Poochyena, though, wasn’t happy. He wanted to prove to the Houndour that he had more spine and was willing to fight for his food just as much. He gave Patch a solid squared tackle, which sent the littler Pokemon scrambling for footing. The lines on Celeste’s face deepened, and she tapped her fingers along her leg, “Patch, use Spark if that Poochyena tries to attack you again,” she simply ordered. Regardless of whether or not the Poochyena would attack, at least the sparks of gold coming from Patch would be a good warning.

Meanwhile, while that was going on, if Denzil peered into the darkness of the smog, he’d see the visible wince from Ruby, who now suffered from poison. Despite her quickness, Rube was surrounded by the swirling mists of the smog, and couldn’t get away.

The Houndour found that as a very good start to being able to turn the battle back on her side, and that Mudbrey was still looking mighty delicious.

With the Smog hindering his partner Denzil had to take things as a partial victory amd rework his strategy. He continued to angle to stave so that the bright desert sunlight would hopefully interefere with the Houndour's eyesight, catching the eye of the whimpering Poochyena as he realized something. The fiery canine had used that attack with its packmate within range, further evidence that the Poochyena was being coerced into cooperating out of fear as well as hunger. He only had a bit of bread and an apple in his pack but it gave him an idea, waving for Ruby to circle back around. The Yanma's Compounded eye s locked onto the two canines as she moved to push them back toward the clay bed.

They were going to have to finish this quick before Ruby was weakened any further, but they couldn't get sloppy if any of them wanted to walk away from this alive. The dragonfly's form flickered for a heartbeat as her Speed Boost bumped her for a third time and let her blur into position. Her outline became indistinct as another Ruby appeared, then another and another until a veritable wall of crimson Yanma was spread before the wild dogs and slowly advancing on them. Each and every visor began to glow with the prismatic light of Signal Beam and angled downward, Denzil reaching into his pack and pulling out the apple. He gave a whistle and threw the fresh fruit towards the Poochyena, being sure to aim it a bit short and away from the Houndour.

Should the Poochyena make a move Ruby would take that as a sign to strike, aiming twin Signal Beams towards the fiery canine from within the mass of Double Team-ed dragonflies. Before she would fire however, Denzil would make another attempt to interefere with the Houndour's sight and move forward. This time he angled the blade to sweep the light into the Houndour's eyes repeatedly instead of a single line. He prayed they were able to end this soon before Ruby got too hurt.

{+0.5 EXP! I'm so sorry you waited so long for an update!}

The distrusting canine pair eyed the humans and their pokemon. The houndour had her eye on Ruby of course but the poochyena's attention was caught between Patch and Ruby. His fur stood on end at his throat and he crouched, trying to watch both pokemon at the same time. Poison rolled through his veins. While not strong on its own, the poison fed off his energy, supped at what little strength he had. But even as it weakened him, the poochyena felt lighter, weightless. His tail stuck out straight, parallel to the ground with his legs bent. He couldn't disappoint the houndour when they might die without food. Despite the fact that she'd just poisoned him, she was all he had. He prepared to attack--and nearly fell over his own two feet.

Ruby's illusion startled the poochyena enough to interrupt his attack. Instead, he snarled in fear and bared his teeth, ears pulled flat to his skull. The houndour tossed her head in his direction, irritated. Her own strength dropped a tiny fraction in response to his instinctive move and this was not the time to lose power. But she couldn't focus on the poochyena's fear as well as the bug and its human trying to attack them. She Leered at Ruby's multiple doppelgangers fiercely, a growl working in the back of her throat in obvious threat. It was impossible to be sure she hit Ruby at all but it made her feel better. There was no way she could hit Ruby for certain one on one but against countless bug types, the houndour was starting to get desperate.

She spat a whoosh of flames upward toward the illusions knowing full well she wouldn't hit the right one. But if she could disrupt the double team enough to better spot the true Ruby among the fakes, she would try. At nearly the same time, poochyena heard Denzil's whistle. He twisted toward the sound in confusion and nearly leaped out of his skin when the apple hit the ground nearby. He bared his teeth at it, then gave it a closer look. His stomach began to growl. He could practically smell the sweet fruit and saliva whet his mouth. His jaws worked open and closed, head canted slightly to one side, but he lacked menace. In the face of free, fresh food the poochyena was quite weak. The houndour didn't notice the food nor poochyena's struggle, dealing with Denzil's light tricks as well as Ruby's copies.

Poochyena took one tiny step forward, then another. His head hung low, tongue lolling out. Nostrils flared to inhale the smell of food. How long had it been since he last had food? The poochyena couldn't recall. Another tiny step. Then all at once he sprinted to the apple and chomped it in half, so hungry he barely paused to chew. His empty stomach clinched with the small bite, screaming for more. But the poochyena looked at the other half of the apple and whined.

The houndour was enraged. All she wanted was to eat and now her prey was out of reach, blocked by a human and his horde of bug types. She growled and gnashed her fire-clad teeth. Her claws marked the soil beneath her feet as she slid sideways and back, trying to draw out the bug type or at least keep herself out of reach. When the first signal beam blasted, the houndour jumped back and was barely grazed by the beam. But the second took her off guard, hitting her in the shoulder. She rolled backward and tensed as she hit the ground.

She was almost right on top of the clay. She shook herself and started to get up, intent on doing something. What, she had no idea. But something. Suddenly the poochyena trotted over and dropped something beside her. She stared at him and the offered item in complete confusion. Her ears twitched. She sniffed. Food! She gobbled the morsel so fast she was already staring back up at the yanma as she swallowed. The taste filled her with more determination. She needed food. She needed to eat--either this bug would be her prey or she'd get at that mudbray in the distance. She was so hungry. Teeth bared, she shot another buffet of embers. Surely at least one would hit. If not, then at least she tried. The poochyena stood at her side, staring not at Ruby and her copies but the human who had thrown him the food.

He didn't understand what was happening with the human, only that the houndour wanted to fight and he had her back. Denzil might try to appeal to their hunger or he might try to attack again and push them further backward. The canines were right on the edge of the clay and a few steps back would surely stick them in place. Was he close to capturing them or would they find a way to escape his grasp?

(Egg Count 1)

"If you want more food, and not to go hungry again, I will find you a home where you will be safe." he called out to the pair as Ruby's wall continued to advance on them. He had a few bits of food left in his pack but using it here would leave them without until they reached the next town or village. Whether or not his words got through was unknown but one thing was certain for the new Handler, he couldn't give up now. Stave in hand he circled it over his head and he breathed a sigh of relief when Ruby seemed to catch the signal, her wall of dopplegangers swirling into a rotating column above the two canines. Buzzing wings flashed in the sunlight and the whirling insects seemed to blur forward slightly as 'they' surrounded the wild Pokemon and began to offset and attempt to push them the last step into the clay bed.

Specks of green energy flicked into the Ruby swarm once and then again as she sought to drain rejuvenating energies from both of her targets. That made the Blacksmith quirk a brow while he made to shift closer with stave in hand, the blazes did she just do? He made an abortive grab for the Pokecard in his pocket but held off considering the situation, there would be time to brush up on his partner's abilities later. Hopefully, anyway. The wind had begun to pick up from Ruby's maneuver and so he couldn't see where Celene or Patch were at that moment.

With any luck they'd be able to push the two back into the clay, once they were stuck he'd be able to tend to Ruby and rest. Then it would become a waiting game where they would hopefully be moving on with two new charges, and once this assignment was complete he'd see about getting them both a proper home. As he watched the twisting whirlwind that was a dragonfly cloud he made a promise to reward her for her heart in this task. First those thieves and now this, the least he could do was show Ruby how much her efforts, and in truth her presence, bolstered his own confidence out in the wild places of Harper.

[0.4 exp! Not entirely sure what's going on here, but I'll do my best?]

There was no apparent response to Denzil's offer of more food - without food there, currently present, neither Pokemon seemed really willing to listen. The closest he got was a glance from Poochyena over to his partner, but seeing the Houndour continue growling and intending to continue fighting, he refused to back down at the human's offer of further food. Poochyena and Houndour kept almost taking a step back into the dry, clay riverbank, but managed to not do so thus far.

Hoping to spook the Pokemon into the riverbank, Ruby created even more copies of herself, buzzing forward as the bug she was to swarm the two confused, starving Pokemon. She took the opportunity to soak up some of both of her enemies' health, feeling her own strength raise - only, she got her real self a little bit... too close, and felt sharp, hot embers dig their flames in deep across her body. She managed to avoid too much damage, but the embers had most definitely hurt; luckily for her, though, she was still flying. Before anything else could happen to her, she flew a bit higher into the sky - she definitely didn't want more of those flames to hit her, that was for sure.

The Poochyena took advantage of Ruby's slight distraction to sneak through the mostly-illusion-filled "wall", and darted out to what he deemed to be the weaker of the targets. His teeth sunk deeply into the side of the small Pachirisu, causing the electric squirrel to call out in pain. Poochyena yelped quickly enough afterwards, though, and limped backwards, the electric squirrel having sent quite a bit of electricity thundering through his body - his yelp caught the attention of the Houndour, who glared accusingly at the squirrel.

She lifted her head and Howled upwards, watching desperately as the Pachirisu then darted in and quickly attacked her friend again, sending the Poochyena hurling into unconsciousness with its speedy attack. Running forward quick as she could manage, her fangs sunk deep into the squirrel's meaty flesh, ignoring any lingering sparks as the Pokemon went limp in her grasp. She didn't stop there, though - she decided to take her chances and flee with the Pokemon, forgetting one important thing: this wasn't a wild Pokemon.

Celene called out in surprise, wordless, and floundered for a moment, gritting her teeth as she watched one of her Pokemon starting to be pulled away - by the time she remembered its Pokeball and pulled it out, the Houndour had already run further than the ball would reliably recall the squirrel in. "Stop the damn thing, before it gets away - that's my Patch!" She pulled out a second pokeball, pressed the button and the Litleo hesitated only a moment before pelting after the fleeing Houndour. It was faster than the half-starved Pokemon it was chasing, would be even if the Houndour had been at full strength, but Houndour was wily - quickly enough, the Houndour had darted down into the riverbank, and neither Denzil nor Celene could actually see them.

Before anything could be said, Celene rounded on Denzil, gave him the nastiest glare she could manage, and didn't bother to say a word before she too pelted in the direction that the Pokemon had just fled in.

Well. Now what?

A gentle nudging at about hip-height would reveal the Mudbray, gently pressing its head against Denzil's side - it seemed grateful for the help in keeping the Pokemon off of its tail. If Denzil chose to catch the small-ish horse, it wouldn't fight the attempt. Likewise, the Poochyena still lay there, forgotten about. If Denzil so wished, that was another Pokemon he could add to his team.

Otherwise, everything was now up to him. Would he choose to chase after the Houndour as well, helping the person he was supposed to be escorting? Would he choose to go on his own way, leaving her to fend for herself? Those were only the easy questions now awaiting Denzil on his journey at that moment.

A flash of light and a Pokeball resting on the sand marked the Poochyena's addition to the group as Denzil stroked the Mudbray's dusty mane. He nearly jumped when a second flash lit up his vision, glancing down to see another 'ball where the small Ground-Type had been nuzzling against him. A quick check confirmed that another of the spheres in his pocket was absent before stooping to collect both of them from the ground.

He pulled one of the yellow Full Heals from his pack when saw Ruby's shadow cresting overhead, waving her down to him with his free arm. He sprayed it onto her carapace and gently dabbed it over her burns until they faded from view, guiding her back into the air with his arm and following after Celene's tracks in the dust. They saw the Litleo's red fur before spotting the woman and trudged through the loose soil to catch up.

Denzil gave Celene a nod of assurance when they caught up to her over the next dune and considered the situation. The Houndour had to be familiar with this area or she would not have made for the riverbank, clear of the entrapping clay and moving with the purpose of one who knew where they were going. They were going to have to move quickly before Patch became a meal, but charging ahead without a plan could get them all into a deeper mess.

The dusty paw and drag marks curved away towards a mass of thorny sagebrush where the Houndour appeared to have made a rough den between the brambles. They couldn't just attack the bushes in case Patch had already been dragged inside, so they would have to attck the Wild creature directly. Denzil gave a nod and the dragonfly blurred forward torwards the wild Houndour, following up with a twisting Reversal before veering off to land on Denzil's back and Roosting. Denzil gave a nod to Celene to recall Patch while the Hound was distracted, keeping his stave at the ready while he moved closer to cut off the escape route.

I'll be PMing you about a few things in the next few days, Ama. Nothing too serious - just a few reminders. It'll come Sunday or Monday - I'm still pretty busy. <3 }

There was an issue with Denzil’s plan – the footsteps he followed weren’t Celene’s. In fact, Celene wasn’t anywhere near a dune, nor near the dirt of the desert. The footsteps he had followed were actually another traveler, who looked completely confused at Denzil and why he was suddenly attacking bushes. What he would find wouldn’t make him happy.

And since Ruby attacked first, it would be clear of what bad decision that was.

The bushes rustled, and an angry “MAAAAAAAN!” came from it. Whatever Ruby had attacked had been annoyed enough that, as it stretched its body, started to pull the bushes right out of the dry ground. A Mandibuzz, a bit bigger than normal sized desert birds, seemed to have been hit. Underneath its body was a bunch of little Vullaby underneath its wings. Three, in fact. There was a fourth, but it seems to have been the target of Ruby’s deadly attack.

It’s what would happen when a baby Pokemon got hit.

The Mandibuzz was not happy. Not at all. It stretched its wings and another “MAAAAAAAAAAAN!” came screeching out. Denzil had just attacked a mother bird who was just caring for its young – the drag marks were from a dead Larvesta, and the little ‘paw’ marks were from the Vullaby – not yet old enough to fly.

Even the other traveler that Denzil just ran into didn’t seem to stick around. The man bolted without a second hesitation as soon as the bushes started to rattle.

Denzil might want to get out of there and retry a different direction, or he could try to fight the Mandibuzz. It looks really, really angry though.
