Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Aptitudes

Overall Appearance:
Leopold Prosper stands at a rather solid six feet in height, being slightly above the average height for men. However, due to his age, he is slightly shorter than he was in his youth, where he had a few more inches in height. His face is still rather strong for an older man, with a rather chiseled jaw and high cheekbones. His nose is a little large but fits his facial appearance well. His hair, while a strong black in color, shows signs of aging with gray-white streaks around his temples and reaching back. Normally Leopold keeps the hair trim, but sometimes he grows it out to a medium length that will cover his head. He has a large beard covering his face that ends with two points below the jaw that is trimmed with immaculate precision. His beard is a source of pride for Leopold as he takes time and effort to maintain it in a manner that he considers refined.

His body is rather wiry in appearance and strong despite his older age. Multitudes of scars don his body as a sign of age and experience, for one does not live to be forty-five and be a guardian without getting injuries. More telling though, are the scars on his arms and hands from endless hours of training and practicing with a crossbow. Some finger scars are particularly distinctive as they are memories of close calls while learning how to handle a crossbow and nearly getting his fingers sliced off from poor handling. However, he opts to wear gloves to cover up his scars and also to more easily use a crossbow.

While working, Leopold Prosper tends to wear the regular Guardian’s uniform, though he tries his best to keep it as uniform and clean as possible. He tends to prefer lighter armors rather than heavy armor due to the advantage it gives him while using a crossbow. As such, underneath his uniform tends to either be scale mail or leather armor for maximum mobility. Though as the years have gone by and he has gotten older, he has slowed down a bit and makes up for it with wearing slightly more armor as a result. In casual situations, he prefers to wear his armor and a rather nice shirt and shoes as a result. He even changes his usual leather gloves for a pair of nice brown gloves that was given to him as a reward for his service over the years, wearing them as a way to honor the person who gave them to him. Though no matter what he wears, he will always be wearing gloves and will have a red sash around his left shoulder reaching down to his right waist.

Something that particularly sticks Prosper out is his glare, for not many people can look him in his brown eyes and stare him down if he is talking to them. The way he walks exudes a sense of experience to those who look at him, and while his age has slowed him down, the way he moves is likely to alert someone that while old, he is no less dangerous. His skin is almost a permanent tan from being outside for many years, though as he has gotten older, it has become paler in tone.
Distinguishing Features:
  • Immaculately clean and kept beard
  • Confident stride, showing experience
  • Multitudes of scars all over his body
  • Very large scars on a few fingers from training with the Crossbow
Overall Personality:
Leopold Prosper is that man who when he enters a place, gets given some degree of respect due to his stride and older appearance. This is not something that was given to him but rather earned through his own life, as he learned from experience how to get someone’s attention without being impolite. Many think he might be a noble or important person, though he is surprisingly humble for an old man. In his youth, he was quite the fiery man who was determined to succeed and show off his strength, but time has given him wisdom and he prefers to be humble if praised or speaking about what he can do. He does not like to boast or show signs of arrogance, but he does make it a point to tell people bluntly if they are not doing something correctly or don’t know what he might be talking about in a conversation. It is due to this humble nature that Prosper has turned down many opportunities for promotion while serving as a guardian, opting to say that he was not worthy of the position or that he preferred to be someone that was able to connect with the recruits.

Being a veteran of the crossbow, Prosper knows his stuff regarding the weapon. While he knows it is a weapon that is fairly easy to use compared to regular bows and any peasant could easily learn how to use one, he knows better than most it is not easy to master. While he is humble in many aspects, he is rather quick to defend himself if his crossbow skill is brought into question. Perhaps age might have slowed his reflexes and ability, but he is more than willing to make a point to prove to a greenhorn just how to fire properly and calculate aim. He has no respect for those who do not know what makes up a crossbow and the basics of how to fire one if they boast about knowing how to use it or saying it is an easy weapon that even peasants can use.

When on the job, Prosper is very serious and follows orders to the letter. The only time he might deviate from orders is if it is a moral decision or involving those who he feels deserves either a second chance or does not deserve to die. However, he does know that in the world, there are many forces out to harm people and thus he is not an idealist that believes everyone deserves a second chance. If he feels that someone deserves to die for the greater good and to protect the people, he will fire a bolt from his crossbow without hesitation. Though he has no love for the Order of the Masque, he understands that some of them may be a necessary evil in this world based on what they do. As such, he abhors dishonest Guardians and those who are traitors when they are supposed to be peacekeepers and helping people.

When conversing with Prosper, many are often put off by how direct he is and how he does not mince words. If he thinks that a dress looks good on a woman, he will tell that woman directly if he is engaged in a conversation with them. Due to his experience and age, he is more than willing to part advice and share his experiences with those who ask him. Though he may not visibly express it, he enjoys talking with younger Guardians as he feels like it is a responsibility for him to help guide them on a good, moral path and mentor them. But instead of telling them what he thinks they should do, he prefers to encourage them to make their own decisions and think about the causes and effects of what their decisions will do on others and themselves.

Around his family, Leopold Prosper acts differently. While he has little love for his parents and his siblings, he has great affection for his nieces, nephews, and his two children. Around the young ones, he is always willing to give them some time and advice whether they want it or not. His nieces and nephews often refer to him as “Uncle Prosper” and often ask to see his ability with a crossbow. Even the older children often ask him for advice and help him out at his home when he asks for it. His children, one boy and one girl, are his greatest pride and joy – even above his crossbow ability. While Prosper loves both children equally, he has a slight preference for his daughter, who he feels is more like he was when he was a young child. He gives equal affection to his son, though sometimes his relationship is strained with his son due to his son taking after his mother more than his father.

Prosper, when his beloved Victoria was still alive, loved her like no other. While their relationship was unhappy at first due to it being a bit of an arranged marriage, the two grew to love each other over time. After her death, Prosper refers to her in a loving, but sad tone. Victoria is one of the few topics that Prosper cannot talk about without getting emotional. On his person he carries a pendant with a likeness of his beloved wife and often looks at it in his private time. Though she had given him freedom to find another wife if he wished, he has remained loyal to her and does not necessarily seek love again.

A weakness Prosper has is children, for he does not like the idea of harming children or making them disappointed. This has nearly cost him his life once as on a mission, he was unable to fire his crossbow at a child that was helping an Order Rogue escape from his clutches. Because of his reluctance to fire, he nearly lost his life as the Rogue tried to kill him with an arrow. It was only mere luck that the arrow narrowly avoided hitting Prosper in the head. That mission ended in a way that he was very unhappy with, and it is to this day the mission that made him retire from being a Guardian for a decade. It is why he prefers to avoid missions or potential interactions where children may be harmed or in the line of fire, as he is not sure he would be willing to see results like his past mission happen again.

As a side note, Prosper hates being called an old man, as he would prefer to think of it as he is in his aging prime of his life. While he is not likely to explode at being called old, he is more likely to be harsher towards the person who called him that.

When it comes to pokemon, Prosper has a varied history with them. He sees them as useful companions and allies on missions. It is his belief that any pokemon has a function or use that makes them relevant, so he will not dismiss any particular type or pokemon. Though in the past when he was younger, he travelled with two pokemon – a Houndoom and a Furfrou as he went after targets that were often hard to track down. His two loyal and faithful pokemon are now retired from service and guard Prosper’s children at their home. When he goes home on rare occasions, he often plays with his former pokemon.
History:
Leopold Altair, born to a small noble family in a town that made its profits through crafting weaponry out of wood, primarily bows and crossbows near Edgewood. He was born the second son to Gaspard Altair and Celene Altair, and unlike his older brother Marshal, Prosper was not looked upon as favorably by his parents. At the time of his birth there were ill omens, and his grandfather happened to die in a storm during the night he was born. His father saw it as a bad sign and saw Leopold as being responsible for his father’s death. Celene Altair nearly died giving birth to Leopold, and with the other ill omens happening on that day, did not have a very favorable view of her son. As Leopold grew older, he learned how to fend for himself. When his family eventually grew larger and he gained two sisters, he learned that there was little love from his family. His parents put their attention on his siblings, and he was the one left out in many events.

One day when he was ten years old and his brother twelve years old, his brother taunted him with a practice sword and called Leopold useless because he didn’t know how to fight. He even tried to humiliate Leopold into a practice swordfight in front of his friends as they were outside their home. Leopold however, knowing that no one would come to his aid but himself, took up a practice sword and fought with his brother. To his brother’s surprise, Leopold more than held himself against his brother. Before his brother could retaliate, Leopold managed to defeat his brother and drew blood on him, leaving a scar on his forehead that would later become permanent. When Gaspard and Celene found out, they punished Leopold and forbid him from using a sword ever again. As punishment, the only weapon he was permitted to use was a crossbow.

The reason behind Gaspard’s decision was that crossbows were viewed as being used by peasants and lower class people, so it was not a weapon fit for a noble. Thus he saw it as a suitable punishment for Leopold who harmed his brother and left a lasting mark. He was sent to learn from an old peasant man in the town who once was a skilled crossbowman and was a former Guardian. Leopold was upset at the punishment, but knew that his parents never listened to him when he objected to anything. Not unless it benefitted them or made them look better in the eyes of others. So it was a disgruntled young Leopold that arrived at a rather shabby-looking home in his hometown and met a man that would change his life completely.

The old man introduced himself as Titus and saw how disgruntled Leopold was. The first thing he did was tell Leopold that if he wasn’t going to be serious about being at his home and learning the crossbow, he could leave and Titus would tell his parents. Young Leopold wasn’t fussed at the possibility of his parents being told, but his anger made him accept the challenge from the man. Leopold told the man that he would learn and become a master in five years. Old Titus laughed at the young man’s enthusiasm and told him to come in, but that they would have to start with the basics.

So it was that Leopold for an entire year learned the basics of how to wield a crossbow before even starting on shooting one. While Titus told Leopold that yes, it was fairly basic and easy to wield, since Leopold promised that he would become a master they had to go in-depth. With the help of the basic schooling Leopold got, something his parents provided despite their dislike of their child because they did not want an uneducated child, Leopold learned how to use math in the art of the crossbow. Painstaking time was taken to learn the range, as Titus wanted Leopold to learn when he fired a crossbow for the young man’s instruction. Leopold went and learned that the average range was about 350-400 yards. It was not enough for the young Leopold, who went and apprenticed at a bowyer’s shop in order to learn about the engineering applied to the bow. He learned about the different kinds it could be made from, such as wood, iron, or steel. He learned how to measure the span, and what material worked best. Often the bowyer made Leopold learn how to make crossbow strings from hemp and to soak it in glue to protect against moisture. He also learned about what material the wooden stock was generally made from, and it helped him as he grew older.

After he learned the materials and what made a crossbow, Titus taught him the details of how to wield it and hold it correctly, for even though it was far easier to aim than a bow, a bad shot meant death to someone using a crossbow. After all, most crossbows could only fire at a rate of 2 bolts per minute with a decent wielder. Titus himself told Leopold that he himself could do three in a hurry when he was younger, but that it was done only in a desperate situation once. He warned Leopold to not try to do more than 2 bolts per minute unless it was a truly desperate situation, for the stress could break his crossbow. This warning would not be remembered until years down the line, when Leopold found himself in a very desperate situation. However, Titus told Leopold that while it was a slower rate of fire, the bolts were incredibly powerful. One bolt could pierce through someone in full armor, which made it a very deadly weapon despite its disadvantages.

Despite his earlier cockiness, Leopold found it was not that easy to wield it effectively. He often needed to support it by going on his knees or setting it on something like a rock so he could fire it due to its size compared to his childish body. He learned how to use two different types of crossbows – one with a lever where he pulled back the string in order to store more energy, and by winding a crank on a ratchet. The latter was a windlass crossbow, though Leopold found it easier for him to pull it back by using a lever as he aged. Sometimes he cut his fingers when he accidentally let the string release when his fingers were on the notches. When these happened, they were painful and Titus would cancel the training for the day for his fingers to recover. They were far too valuable to ruin, and while Leopold was teased by his siblings at home for showing up dirty, covered in some blood and with his hands in bandages, he trudged on with his training.
Eventually he grew older and stronger, the other training Titus made him do such as working his body and helping strengthen his legs making him able to use a crossbow more easily. Due to the strengthened leg muscles he had as he grew older, he was able to use a hook on the end of a strap on his belt to engage the bowstring of a crossbow. Afterwards, he would hold the crossbow down by putting his foot through the stirrup and draw the bow back by straightening his legs. While easy enough to do, it was repeated practice whenever he was with Titus that made him become a more efficient user.

Instead of stopping at being able to use it efficiently, Leopold learned how to fight around the disadvantages. If he missed his target, he learned how to retreat until he could get to a safer position and fire again for the second bolt within a minute. Though it grew easier over time as the crossbow was fairly easy to aim. The young man learned how to use it at different ranges with different pulls on the string, so he could use it up close if necessary. While Leopold told Titus he would become a master in five years, it took him eight years before he was told by Titus that he learned everything the old man could teach him. At Titus’ recommendation, Leopold was told to join the Guardians so that he could get the crucial component Titus could not teach him – experience. While Leopold was skilled with using a crossbow and knew the basics, it would be something else if he went into a battle situation.

So Leopold joined the ranks of the Guardians, getting possibly the first and only smile he had ever seen his parents give him his entire life when he told them about it. After all, to join the Guardians was rather noble, and there was honor and prestige in joining them. But Leopold did not do very well the first few years as a Guardian. He was brash, arrogant, and while he often proved others wrong about his skill by accurately shooting targets, he made no real friends his age with the Guardians. He was given an unruly Houndour and Furfrou as his partners, two pokemon that were seen as “wild and untamed” by the Guardians despite their noble lineage. Leopold had trouble with the two canines that refused to listen to him at first, and on his first mission with them, they got into a bad situation.

That day, Leopold and his canine companions ended up being ambushed by bandits on what was supposed to be an easy job of guarding a caravan headed to Dedrius. While Leopold used his crossbow and took out two pokemon and a bandit, his companions ended up fighting a rather strong Arcanine and nearly ended up dead at the powerful canine’s attacks. It was only the timely intervention of Leopold with a well-aimed crossbow bolt at the Arcanine that stopped the beast. However, helping the two canines caused him to get injured by an arrow fired by an archer. The Houndour and Furfrou were stunned by the fact he helped them out first over getting the archer, but repaid the favor by killing the archer. Leopold fell unconscious from the injury and later woke up in the Guardian’s infirmary a few days later. When he woke up, he noticed the two canines looking at him with respect and unlike before, they acknowledged him as their handler.

Thus it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship of handler and pokemon as on every mission, Leopold would bring the two canines with him. They often did tracking missions and searching missions due to their team dynamic. Leopold would bring ranged fire, while the canines brought their tracking noses. They had their fair share of successes and failures, but while Leopold earned enough merits and rose in rank, he declined many times, opting to do the missions that few would want to do. He was confident in his skills and his pokemon, knowing that as long as they were together, they could do just about anything.

After his seventh year as a Guardian, when Leopold was twenty-five, his parents arranged a marriage for him. Leopold was furious at this, but because of the death of Titus a year prior and the man’s last wish for Leopold to pass on his teachings to the next generation, he decided that it was worth his time to marry now. After all, he did not pursue others himself and while it was a pain to do something his parents wished, he figured it was better to at least appease them once so they would avoid him afterwards. Thus he met Nyna Prosper… a woman that on first sight, he loathed. To him, she was everything that his parents and family represented – wealthy, from a better family, snobbish, and saw him as a barbarian due to his actions.

The first year was tense as he rarely came home to their house after they got married and things were tense. However, they did their duty and soon, Nyna was pregnant with their first child after the second year. By the third year of marriage, Leopold was blessed with a son – Ulric. However, he learned from the midwife that the birth had taken its toll on his wife and she bled a lot. For Leopold, he felt awful for having treated his wife so coldly and with detached interest for years. If she had died… he knew that he would have regretted it, for she had given him a child, someone to pass on his legacy. When he spoke to his sickly wife after showing her their son, she gave him a smile and told him that she felt the same way. They did not like the obligations struck on them by their parents, but did not want their child to hate their parents because they did not get along.
As such, both made promises to each other to learn more about each other and try to get along, at least for the sake of their child.

When Ulric grew older, Leopold learned something one day when he was speaking to Nyna and after talking to his canine partners. He loved her. So he told Nyna, and she gave him a smile before saying that she grew to love him too, and both affirmed their love for each other. A year later, Nyna was pregnant again. By this time, Leopold was on a mission with Cassidy the Houndoom and Leon the Furfrou, his partners that grew stronger and remained faithful to Leopold as he grew older. He was thirty-three at the time and on a rather long mission given to him by his superiors when he heard the news that made him rush home.

By the time he got home, the atmosphere in the house was gloomy and his friends and family were silent. He quickly moved past them and raced to the room where Nyna was, only to enter and learn from the healer that his wife had lost so much blood she was not going to survive. The man went inside and got privacy with his wife before she passed away. Later, the crossbow wielder would come out and there was a perpetual gloom around the man. Whatever the words said between the couple at her last moments was untold by Leopold, who refused to speak of what they talked about. However, he did obtain at least one blessing on this depressing day. It was the day his daughter Florianne was born, and on that day, Leopold honored his wife by taking her last name – Prosper as his new name.

With the advice given by his family, Leopold had his children live with his sister – who he trusted more than his other sister and his brother, at least to some degree. Ulric and Florianne grew up living and learning with their cousins while their father continued his work for the Guardians, though he had lost motivation in his job. The death of Nyna took a hard toll on him, and one mission ended up nearly costing him his life. The mission consisted of trying to stop the Order from fulfilling some kind of mission, and that day Leopold hesitated for the first time while using his crossbow. He could not kill the child that a rogue took cover behind, and he ended up nearly losing his life. Cassidy and Leon ended up heavily injured after the mission and the mission became a failure, though it was quietly covered up due to the critical importance of the mission. Ashamed at his failure, Leopold asked to resign from the ranks of Guardians due to his error and nearly losing his and his partner’s lives.

However, his patron saw the value and strength Leopold had despite his past and wanted Leopold to stay on as a trainer for the younger guardians who wanted to learn how to wield a crossbow. But Leopold had originally declined, wanting to move to Fough Place with his family so he could care for his young children. When told a good word would be put in for him and since it was not a full retirement, he would be able to provide for his family. While he begrudgingly accepted the new position, his two faithful canine companions decided to retire from the job. Instead, he had Cassidy and Leon stay with his children at their new home and be guard dogs for his children. That way, his two canines would be able to retire and be in a place where they would still get the attention and affection they deserved. Leopold especially regretted the injury that Leon had obtained, for Leon could never walk the same way again.

The last decade Leopold devoted his time to his new job and taught other young guardians how to use a crossbow. While many did not express such interest, those who were interested he made sure to teach them the basics. Most did not want specialized training so he did not go into-depth, but he taught them until they were at least average with the weapon. He was told that if he wished, he could go back into active duty instead of teaching but he declined for the decade, opting to take advantage of the time to teach others and raise his own children. Unfortunately while Ulric learned a bit more from his aunt and took after his parents somewhat, Florianne was always happy to have her father around. She became her daddy’s little girl and he taught her when she was eight years old of how to wield a crossbow.

However, he was still close to his children and loved them both, wanting them to excel in whatever they wished. But he knew that as chaos started to spread throughout the entire region… and when the schism made many factions… even old veterans like him were going to be sucked up into the fighting. There were dark clouds on the horizon… and sometimes people just needed a veteran like Leopold to help bring some order to the region. Of course, there was the possibility that he would be left behind as he was older and not young anymore. But at the age of forty-five, Leopold Prosper decided that it was time to get back into active duty. While he enjoyed his training, his children grew older and more independent that he did not need to be around them all the time. So it was with determination in the old veteran’s eyes that he decided to tell his patron that he was ready to go back into active duty… for the sake of everyone he cared for and for the sake of those that needed protection.
