Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Erland Mason

Aptitudes

Overall Appearance:
If one could personify what a Guardian was supposed to look like, Erland would be that. Six feet in height, with the frame of a soldier--fit and strong without being overly bulky--he carried himself with pride. His broad shoulders forever stood erect and respectful atop the barrel that he called a chest, and the neatly-trimmed gruff along his jaw only helped to hide the fact that he was as young as he was. When he walked, it was with balance and poise, a predominantly natural trait that he inherited simply by watching the other Guardians... the good ones, anyways. Finally, sandy blonde waves graced his crown, nestled above a pair of soft, blue eyes. In them, one could see happiness (where the crinkles around his eyes were already becoming a fixture) and, if they were discerning enough, loneliness. In all essence, he looked not unlike a knight out of a storybook, except with more scars. He was handsome, with a charming smile, and there was an aura of trustworthiness that surrounded him.

Hardly, if ever, did he venture anywhere without adorning some form of armor, even if it were light. It was not that he was necessarily paranoid of being attacked but, rather, in case someone else may have been. As long as he were equipped for a fight, he could assist. His preference: lamellar, for it was not as burdensome as scale, yet it offered more protection than your standard leather. But, still, for the days that Erland was required to adorn something other than his armor, he trended towards the simple and humble, preferring to choose efficient clothes that would not draw too much attention to himself.
Distinguishing Features:
  • Looks like the poster-child for Guardians everywhere.
Overall Personality:
Of the two boys, Erland was most like his father--strong, genial, gallant--and, like his father, he was a simple man with simple tastes and simple pleasures. His dreams consisted of little more than serving his time in the service and raising a respectable family. What else really was there for a man like him? If nobody ever escaped the world alive anyhow, then why fret over the "may be's," and "what if's," of it all? For many, this mindset may have proved to serve more harm than good but, for Erland, it truly put things into perspective. Trivial matters rarely, if ever, bothered him, he took great joy in "the little things," of life, and he had a passion for people that few could rival, much less understand, and it came easy to him; however, this aspect of his personality may have also been just as well attributed to the Lord Cain Dodgeson as much as his father.

Even though it was limited, the time he spent around the Lord of Fough Place proved to be a large factor in the man he was becoming, for he admired the man so. He learned what respect looked like by the way people treated him and how the Lord treated them in kind, and the man's virtues became his own the more that he watched him. However, Erland was still as bull-necked as any other young stud and, with the pride of a Tyrogue, he was not one to back down from a challenge. Then again, neither was he one to stand for anything ill-natured when it came down to it. This, one of his more admirable traits, stemmed from his sense of honor and duty to those who were less fortunate than he, for he was the kind of person who made every effort to provide acts of random kindness (even to strangers) whenever the opportunity presented itself--this, too, was something he had seen in Cain which, he gathered, was one of the many reason why the people adored him.

There were some that knew Erland who took a look at his life and became envious, for they seldom heard of any troubles, nor were there many visible pains in his life aside from the death of his father; however, this was simply because the man refused to share his personal struggles with most people, and he always pushed them down so that no one would know. Those who could tell whenever something was bothering him was only evidenced whenever his jaw clenched. But rather than confess to struggling, his pride often caused Erland to isolate himself from others, preferring to either foolishly pursue a difficult task on his own, or to withdraw within himself when pressed with overwhelming emotions. During these times, he would delve deep into whatever task was at hand and, if there were none, then he would find one, even if that only meant that it was time that he honed up on his existing skillset.

One such reason for his lone-wolf outlook on personal trials may have been caused by his greatest fear: losing those whom he had become close to. As great of a speaker as he could be, and although he could easily forge friendly, yet shallow, relationships, Erland seldom allowed anyone too emotionally intimate with himself due to the pain he suffered when his father died. Instead, his go-to method was to push people away whenever they attempted to get too close, and even go as far as to avoid those type of conversations entirely. To this day, there are only really two people that he feels that he can truly call a friend: Tomas, his brother, and Lord Cain Dodgeson.
History:
For one to truly understand Erland, one must first know something of his lineage. The Mason name had long been associated with the Guard at Fough Place on to a handful of generations even before his father (Gerald) had his first taste of service, and he would not be the first to break the proverbial chain. Fifteen years old and green as an oddish leaf, the lad was enlisted under the authority of his own father as an unofficial "Squire of the Guard", although even he knew that the title translated to little more than "Errand Boy". Still, he took every assignment in graciousness so that, when his time came, he would be ready. Three, short years later, Gerald was swearing in as a Junior Guardian. It happened to be the very day that he turned eighteen.

The years quickly passed and Gerald was well on his way to making a name for himself as a Mason when, not long after graduating to the ranks of a true-to-form Guardian, he grew close with a man named Henson. Now, this man had a younger sister about his age, and it was through this blossoming friendship that the up-and-coming Mason would meet his future wife: Bethany, daughter of Caleb, the silversmith. Any man who had seen Gerald in the field would have been able to testify to his bravery as a soldier, even in spite of his youth; however, it would take him nearly six years to muster up enough courage to ask the auburn-haired woman for her hand in marriage. Looking back, he could still remember the first time he held it in his own, how gentle and sweet it was.

Their two sons--twins--arrived on the eve of his promotion to Senior Guardian. Unfortunately, his new rank meant that he would often be gone from home, sometimes only for a night but, often times, the days ran together when he was off on a mission. Tomas (for that was his brother's name) and Erland's relationship with their father was limited because of this, but he was never completely absent from their lives. Rather, George took every opportunity he could to spend even a moment with his two boys and, although he missed their first steps, their first words, and many, many more firsts, he still held a respectable place in their lives. If anything, the time spent apart only deepened their relationships... although this was not quite the case with Bethany. Their mother quickly became lonely whenever George was away so, in order to stay faithful to her husband, she delved into her work, unintentially neglecting her boys to ensure her sanity; luckily, due to the Mason's long-standing family ties to the Guard, there was always someone around to help. What caught many people by surprise, though, was where that help would sometimes come from.

Because of their family's history with the Guard at Fough Place and Cain Dodgeson's reputation as a benevolent and humble Lord, it came as little surprise that the Masons were personally acquainted with the man. In fact, he had personally known George's father, Regis, before he had passed away, and had also become rather close with George as well, for they were close to the same age, after all, and had similar enough personalities that respect for one another came easily. So as a token of gratitude, the Lord of Fough Place would personally invite the boys to attend tournaments and the like with him whenever their father was sent out on longer, more difficult details. At first, the notion of inviting the twins was a mere courtesy to a faithful, honorable soldier from a respectable Guardian's family. But as he got to know the two, young boys, they slowly found a special place in the man's heart. Of course, as busy as a noble of his station was, the Lord had little time for the boys outside of the tournaments and arts shows that he attended... so it was during those limited times that Erland and Tomas soaked up anything and everything that the Lord said or did--the way he walked and acted and his joy for serving the people, asking him question upon question to their heart's content. Who could blame them after all, for how rare it was indeed for two boys of non-nobile birth to spend as much time with the ruling Lord of a city?

As was the case, many of the boys' early years were spent as much as they possibly could between the little bits of time they got with him, and the little bits of time they got with their father until, as fate would have it, disaster struck the Mason home. When the twins were about fourteen, George was killed in the line of duty on some mission that no one but the Lord, himself, seemed to know anything about, and his lips could not be tempted to speak of it. Neither boy was ever the same after they received the news from that same man--a kindness that was not required of him--although they handled the death of their father in two very different ways. Tomas, the more emotionally available of the two boys, grew closer to their mother before falling into apprenticeship under Henson (her brother) in his silver-smithy, "Fough's Silvers"--a trade that he continues to this day. Meanwhile, Erland was at war within himself. For an entire two years, he held Lord Dodgeson in contempt for refusing to tell him what happened to his father or how he died, and he shut the Lord out of his life almost entirely, preferring to isolate himself rather than seek council and encouragement. Instead, the boy chose to dive in to the Guard, chasing the ghost of his father by the way of personal service. It took a great amount of convincing to be allowed to do so much at the mere age of fourteen, but Lord Dodgeson eventually relented to allow Erland a place as an unofficial "Squire of the Guard," just as his father had been before him. Some thought the Lord allowed it because he felt guilty for not telling the boys how their father had died but, then again, it was only speculation. Still, Erland did not let his opportunity go to waste.

With a fire in his belly, Erland served the people in every way that he could so that it might bring honor to his father's legacy and the Mason name, and after his duties were completed, he spent most of his nights drowning out his sorrow by practicing his Guardian's skills--horsemanship, swordplay, pokemon handling (whenever the other Guardians would let him borrow their pokemon), and everything else that he might think of that might have made him a better Guardian... anything that would have made him a better man. If there was every a man or woman who might be able to teach him something, he asked, and he was found to be not only a diligent worker, but a quick student of just about anything he set his mind to. But he was still not technically a member of the Guard... that is, not yet.

So now, after four years of training, Erland is finally ready to enlist, hoping to continue the Mason legacy. He hoped his father would be proud.
