Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Handlers
The term handler may be applied to any person who keeps pokémon, and is the general way a person will refer to another if their affiliation is not known. The character class 'Handler', however, refers to a specific group of handlers, and is always capitalized when referred to in this sense.

Handlers are effectively vigilantes. They neither fight for the law nor break it, and hire themselves out as they please, choosing to accept or deny an assignment or a mission at will. While it isn't common for a Handler to set their own price for a mission, it has happened- though that's a surefire way to get yourself less business than other people if you demand it every time. Handlers may be approached by people on the street, vendors, guildsmen- even Guardians on occasion- to do odd jobs or to run messages. When they're not busy, they can stop into any town square and pick up a job from the bulletin board. Typically, the person who posted the notice will also have left an address or will be nearby to arrange a meeting place. They may use whichever method they like to complete the tasks they are given, so long as no laws are broken.

Basically, Handlers are the middle ground, the neutral class, neither shady nor bound to serve a Patron. This is not to say that they are all good or all bad, however. Because this is such a general class, some will be more loyal to the ruling bodies, and some will be more devious in their methods- there is neither stereotype nor archetype for this personality.

However, with the title of Handler come a few stipulations, and a few extra freedoms.

A Handler should not be breaking any laws except in extreme cases and matters of life or death, not only because they have no one to fall back on if a Guardian is set on them or if they upset the Order of the Masque (O.M. or 'the Masque', as it is commonly referred to as), but also because they risk their reputation and therefore their clientèle. They are favourite targets for bandits and the Masque because they have the support of neither a large organization nor the favor of a Patron.

On the flip side, a Handler may take on multiple jobs at a time, may drop a job at any time (at the risk of damaging their reputation, of course), and as previously stated, may select which jobs they would like to take. Special jobs will be posted in the Public Services bulletin board, which any Handler may post to take and claim for a higher quality reward (which may or may not be uncommon throughout a journey- a Handler has no guarantee of pay). In addition, a Handler can pick up a member-posted bulletin/job request, and the trade service will handle the transaction. Payment will be set by the other member (negotiations may occur) and cannot be changed after it has been set, thus ensuring that the Handler will be paid.

Reputation System (please see Character Experience)

Weapons and Armour
Handlers begin with a staff, either bladed wood or of a metal alloy (the latter being about twice as heavy as the former) OR a short sword; all Handlers who start off as this class are assumed to have basic hand to hand combat skills. Each will be equipped with a set of leather-backed chainmail, which is a medium armour that is neither too light nor too heavy and makes a small amount of noise. It does not overheat as rapidly as plate armour or scalemail, but more rapidly than plain leather and is a reasonably good defense. The set consists of a shirt and pants. The player may choose to ask for the shirt to be sleeveless, for no pants, or for a specific piece instead of one of the default pieces, et cetera. Handlers start with better armour because they have no backing from any power.

    Key Points:
  • Choose either a staff (either metal or bladed wooden) or a short sword.
  • Default armour is leather-backed mail shirt and pants
  • A piece of armour may be substituted for one of the standard set. The armour will never be any of higher quality than leather-backed mail.
Missions
Handlers may choose to take whatever jobs they like, as outlined above.

    Key Points:
  • Handlers decide their own errands and must tag their general goals at the bottom of their posts in OOC tags to assist the updaters in keeping track of things.
  • Handlers are expected to remain within the boundaries of the law, and therefore not to steal from, hurt, maim, or kill other people.
Sample
In your rp sample, the Handler character must play out obtaining a pokémon and starting equipment in some way, be it through inheritance, or having previously purchased the equipment and just going out and catching a pokémon, buying something, trading, finding it, anything at all so long as it is legal.
