Quick Updates

Weather Conditions

Season: Autumn

With the cooling season of Autumn, Ice-types are starting to re-emerge from their hibernation as Ghost-, Normal-, and Flying-types swarm in the largest numbers they will all year. In comparison, wild Fire- and Bug-type populations are falling in number. The migration of Flying-types to the south in search of warmer weather has also started, as Istin City starts to re-freeze and Autumn marks the beginning of Cypwater Point's rainy season. Handlers and Rogues alike should be wary: Ghost-type powers are boosted during this season, at the cost of being more prone to their triggers.

Aptitudes

Overall Appearance:
Frankly, Ellie has an appearance that tends to stick out. It might be because of her height, at 5’11”, tall even for some males, makes her a full head taller than most of her sex. Or it could be because of her hair—a bright auburn color that is a testament to her Fletcher blood. She has many other characteristics prevalent to her family; a diamond-shaped, angular face, green, almond-shaped eyes, and olive skin. A smattering of freckles stretches across her nose and under her eyes. Freckles could be found over her shoulders and chest as well, if she weren’t donned in leather-backed chainmail armor at nearly all times. Exposure to the sun has made her freckles more prominent and her skin darker.

She carries herself with a confident air, perhaps adding to the attention she might draw. It is not an arrogant confidence she wields, though it can certainly be interpreted that way, but a self-assured readiness. In keeping with her upbringing, to display boldness and self-reliance was to exhibit strength. Her hair, thick and a tad wavy, is styled in a half-up, braided ‘do that reaches a little past her shoulders. Her eyes are a solid green, typical of Fletcher blood. If she’d been born in modern times, she’d likely be diagnosed with moderate cases of astigmatism in either eye. Because of this, she is often required to squint in order to bring things into focus. The squinting gives her the appearance of a rather prominent scowl, and this expression, coupled with her height and need to wear armor at all possible times, comes off as intimidating or unapproachable to some.

Her frame is lined well with muscle. It is more the body-type of a common laborer, of one used to hard work for survival, rather than the trained body of the knight she was meant to be. She is not particularly well-endowed or curvy, less so under the weight of armor, but her feminine form is apparent enough at a distance. Below her right eye is a clean scar, white and indented, about three inches in length. The underside of her right hand is covered in severe burns and burn scar contractures, though she rarely has the appendage covered. In fact, if you looked close enough, you were like to see a backwards, slightly tilted ‘F’ branded into her palm.

Her typical attire is a waist-length, maroon linen doublet, trimmed with black fabric and gold-colored thread. The doublet is sharply fit and rather plain. If not the doublet, then she will wear a sleeveless, brown leather jerkin over an off-white undershirt. Like the doublet, the jerkin is also plain. All of it is a tad oversized, so as to fit comfortably over the leather-backed mail. For colder weather, she has a tattered cloak, trimmed with striped furret’s fur about the hood. It’s fastened with a clasp in the shape of a displayed talonflame—though the metal is so worn the design is nearly indistinguishable. The heavy wool of the cloak is additionally faded; once a bright red, is it more a light, ruddy brown. Black breeches are most always worn and tucked into a pair of dark boots. Browns, reds, blacks and off-whites usually dominate other attire.

At her belt are a number of things for convenience; on her right, a sword frog with her shortsword, on her left, special slots for up to six pokeballs and a small waterskin held in place with a bit of leather and a snap fastener. A leather pouch at her back contains other small items she might need to reach in a hurry. Across her back she carries a pack for most else.
Distinguishing Features:
  • scar under eye
  • burn marks on right hand
  • freckles
  • left-handed
  • Caledonian accent
Overall Personality:
Ellie is not a particularly likeable person. This not something that is entirely her fault—she would very much like to have good relations with others—but her personality turns most others off, more often than not. Growing up a daughter of a noble family, on the path to becoming a knight, traits like confidence, aggressive leadership, righteousness, and chivalry were rewarded. In interactions with common people, however, her brand of justice and rectitude can come off as unwanted, haughty, or downright annoying.

Having had a sword and bow in her hands the moment she could bear the weight and draw the string, Ellie can read an opponent as lead a target as easily as she can breathe. Swordplay is her strongest skill, and, although she is admittedly out of practice and her injury has hindered her archery, her bowmanship is also notable. In spite of her ability to predict an enemy’s moves, nearly all social graces are lost on Ellie. Punchlines elude her, she is unable to pick up on sarcasm, and is overall terrible at making conversation. She is able to interpret body language as if reading a book, yet she struggles with anything else in the realms of sociability, and, as a result, can appear awkward or even unintelligent. Such is not the case; Ellie is very well-read, with an education fitting of a noble lady.

Because of her vision difficulties, (likely the result of astigmatism) she is forced to squint often to bring things into focus. The near-permanent scowling expression makes her appear sullen and angry. The eyestrain gives her headaches and occasionally migraines, and she is absolutely irritable during those times. Her scowl-y, serious expression is not a very good representation of her actual personality otherwise. Ellie is loyal to an absolute fault; she holds up those she cares for higher than herself. In addition, since she is generally unable to maintain even acquaintances, any person with whom she has had a favorable conversation, or so much as seems to enjoy her company, is seen, in her eyes, as comrade and friend (whether or not the title is wanted).

Ellie additionally has a tendency to see things only in black and white. This is not because she hasn’t been jaded by her past or forced to approach moral dilemmas—quite the opposite. To Ellie, there is a right and a wrong; there are those who do good, and those who do bad, and the lines between them could not be any more obvious. Her past experiences have shifted what Ellie defines as “right” or “wrong,” leaning her more towards a Neutral or Chaotic Good typing than the Lawfully Good she believes herself to be. She can be fiercely protective of upholding The Good and, conversely, unforgiving to those who commit a wrong. These heavy-handed beliefs are neither wanted nor practical for the world she now lives in, yet she sticks to it nonetheless.

Ellie is unquestionably brave—but not without fear. In fact, she has a debilitating fear of fire. The sight or smell of smoke is enough to trigger a panic attack. Fire pokemon, so long as large, visible flames are not part of their anatomy, are creatures whose presence she can typically stand. Something like a rapidash or magmortar would send her heart racing and cause her to freeze up. She goes so far as to avoid making a fire for necessitates such as warmth and food. That isn’t to say she wouldn’t light a flame in a life-or-death situation; nonetheless it is a task she prefers to leave to her companion. And this leads to her second fear—an aversion to solitude. Being alone frightens her and this is not a fear she will ever admit to. Maybe it is because of the fate that befell her family, or of her unfortunate embracing of darkness that comes with an aversion of fire, or of the fact that independence is seen as a necessary trait of any respectable knight…Ellie just fears being alone. She will go to lengths to seek companionship; nothing romantic, certainly, as her lack of social skills leave a lot to be desired in a partner.

Though her skills in combat are great, conflict (involving only her) is something she avoids. In her past, she was constantly challenging any affront to her personal honor, as taught in her upbringing, but now, she refrains from confrontation. Any arrogance and pride she may’ve once had has been tempered with a heavy dosage of self-depreciation and –doubt: Confidence was a trait expected of her, but the ability to stand for oneself is not a skill that can be taught. In spite of her strokes of passivity, she is repeatedly guilty of intervening in matters that really do not concern her. This could be because of her desire to defend the weak, to fight injustice. It could be because she holds even strangers on a pedestal higher than herself. Regardless, her intervening is an unwanted annoyance to most, although the girl as an undeniable, natural authority to step in and take control over a situation.

Her primary goal, and reason for coming to Harper, is to join the ranks of the Guard. She wishes more than anything to impress herself upon a patron, to become a knight errant and serve her Lord or Lady, and make her way up the ladder. Ellie wants to serve and protect in a way she was never able to, to regain her honor where it was destroyed, and to bring good fortune to a family name marred by greed and corruption.
History:
Elena Fletcher’s origins do not begin in Harper. She was born into nobility, the type of rich blood that could afford to have their family initials on all their shiny brass doorknobs. She was the third child born to the Fletcher household, after two brothers three and four years her senior. They were a household with many generations of control and influence in one of the fractured kingdoms of the Caledon region. Their device contained a white talonflame displayed on a divided field of red and yellow.

They lived in a vast manor made of wood and stone, surrounded by the forests that were responsible for their wealth. You see, the Fletchers will swear that the founder of their house, the original Fletcher, was the first falconer in all of Caledon, and between him and his tamed talonflame, there was no prey that couldn’t be felled by the duo. The talonflame became emblazoned on his coat of arms, and falconry the family skill. Over the years, as the tale goes, the Fletchers came to be very well-rounded hunters and trappers, amassing wealth in fur trade and raising birds of prey of all types. The fiery line of the talonflame would always be their namesake, and the well-bred fletchlings they raised and sold to all hawkers carried the word of their skills across Caledon. A village grew up and around the manor, eager to hunt in the prosperous forests and start families. The Fletcher wealth grew, and their ownership of the surrounding land grew exponentially. The Fletchers became less hunters and more business men and women, charging the villagers a small fee to hunt on the land and prospering from a successful fur trade. They still raised and trained raptors; it was in their blood, after all, and there was no Fletcher who was not an experienced falconer. This balance was maintained for generations, and this is the setting on which Ellie’s life begins.

As the third child born, Ellie didn’t have to worry about taking over the family trade; that was for her older brothers to worry about. From the time she could speak, a different path attracted Ellie—the honor of glory of knighthood was the only goal Ellie ever had in mind. She grew up with this sole objective always as her motivation. When she learned to read, it was to study the Codes of Chivalry and scrolls on martial arts. At seven, she was introduced to Gregory Fiaro, a knight who, in generations past, had some Fletcher blood somewhere in his ancestry, and was referred to as “Uncle” nontheless. She would eventually be his squire, and he was the first to put a sword in her hand and show her to nock an arrow. As the years went by, she practiced swordplay with her older brothers, learned to hunt with a bow with her father, and learned the manners of court with her mother. Her exposure to foreign merchants required her to learn some Harperian, a task she then felt silly and unnecessary, but a skill she would be infinitely grateful for later.

At fourteen, she left her home to become Fiaro’s squire. Her training came into full swing and with it, she mastered many studies of combat. She attended Fiaro in his tourneys and at court, absorbing everything with eagerness and enthusiasm. At eighteen, word reached her that the second Fletcher son had passed away in an unfortunate accident. Ellie returned home for the first time in four years to attend the funeral of her brother. The Fletcher heir, Lionel, was an emotional wreck, fiercely angry rather than grieving. He threw an irate fit during the service and left in a wake of ferocity. Concerned, Ellie followed him, tracking her brother into the forests.

She found him sitting beneath a tree, stroking the head of his fletchinder. The bird gave her a sharp look as she approached, alerting him to her presence. Cooing calmly at the falcon, Ellie took a seat beside her brother and listened to his venting. Grief and anger evident in every fiber of his being, he began talking, caving in to the occasional sob. He explained to her that their brother hadn’t died in some accident, like the Lord and Lady Fletcher had expressed to everyone. A riot had started in the village nearest their estate, and their brother had gone with a small host of guards to quell it. The members of the riot seized hold of the Lord’s son, dragging him from his mount and beating him before the guards could regain control. His mangled body was brought back to the Lord Fletcher, but he was too late for the magic of healers and slipped away from them.

Ellie, confused, only stared at him. A riot? Why was there a riot? Lionel snarled at her, furious at her ignorance, explaining that this wasn’t the first riot, and wouldn’t be the last. The people were angry. They couldn’t afford the fees the Fletchers demanded for hunting in the woods they claimed, subsistence hunters and their families were starving. It was getting to the point where they’d rather see the whole forest burn than give the wretched household another coin. Their Lord father had hired thugs to protect his land from “poachers,” which was now just defined to anyone that didn’t pay up. The riot that had killed their brother was triggered when the thugs had murdered a trapper. Ellie felt embarrassment and anger color her cheeks. Her nobility and unwavering desire to join the ranks of the knights had blinded her to any other problems; they just were not important to her. Those were issues that individuals who outranked her worried about—and they only had positive things to say about their influence and the well-being of the people, so why would she disagree? At eighteen years old, it was only now that Ellie was beginning to truly understand the internal struggles that afflicted the region she called home. She hated herself for not bothering to better comprehend the issues at hand. More than that, she was angry and ashamed that her family was causing the suffering of the people. They depended on the forests for their livelihood. The displayed talonflame on their crest was not just a symbol of their power; it was also a reminder that a Fletcher would protect their people, like a falcon protecting her clutch.

Lionel would tell her no more, falling into frustrated weeping at the loss of his dear brother and the fate of their family. Resolve steadying, Ellie left him to confront her parents. To their credit, the Lord and Lady Fletcher were intensely emotionally disturbed at the death of their child. They first grew sober at her accusations…and then angry. Her father stood, encroaching into her personal space, as he talked. He was never a very openly emotional man and, even at the most upset Ellie had ever seen him, he still kept his voice level. Ellie hated him for it. He reproached her for being naïve, for having her head so far up in the clouds, what with her shows of being a knight, that she was sharing residence with rayquaza itself. She couldn’t possibly understand what was required of them to stay in power in a place absorbed by conflict like Caledon; wealth and generations of influence were not what they used to be. In a final expression of dominance, Lord Fletcher proclaimed that he would continue to do whatever it took to retain the power of their household—bribes, treachery, murder. Their livelihood—her livelihood—would be secured. Shocked at his unabashed sordidness, Ellie fell back away from them. She cursed them for their shameless, dishonorable actions. They had brought disgrace to everything the founder of their house stood for. In her own final act of rebellion, Ellie unsheathed her greatsword, the mighty length of steel that had come from the bellows of this very house, with gems of red and yellow built into its pommel, the instrument that had become her greatest strength and weapon of choice; she unsheathed it and threw it at their feet with a terrible clattering. Ellie Fletcher turned on her heel and left the manor.

If Gregory Fiaro was confused as to her sudden departure from her family’s home, he didn’t question it and followed the young woman back to his own land. A near fortnight went by, with Ellie unable to focus on her training. Fiaro figured it had to do with the death of her brother, until Ellie finally sat her uncle down to piece out what was on her mind. Fiaro’s solemn, quiet absorption of the information disturbed her. Did he already know this? He explained that he had an idea, which infuriated Ellie, yet he managed to calm her. He was a knight, yes, however he was but a vassal to her household, his land and power granted to him generations ago. He could only obey the word of his Lord and hope to protect his family. Unhappy with the response, Ellie vowed to abandon her role as squire, and earn her knighthood elsewhere. Fiaro gripped her fast about the shoulders and leveled her with a serious stare. Go back to your father, to your brother, he told her. The task of fixing things fell to her and, mostly, to her brother. The two of them could right things. Lionel was the heir, after all.

Ellie agreed after some reflection. The Fletcher girl rode back to her birthplace the following day as fast as her mount would carry her.

The front gardens were ablaze. The great oak door to the manor had been smashed in, and large chunks of wood were scattered across the vestibule. Ellie ducked as a blast of intense heat and smoke greeted her once inside. Coughing, she went into the house, screaming for her mother, father, and Lionel. Upon turning a corner, two unknown armed men attacked her. She barely dodged the first sword swing, earning herself a laceration under one eye that bled down her cheek and neck. A scuffle ensued before she managed to come away victorious. Deed done, Ellie raced away, kicking down doors and calling for her family. She again ran into another group of armed enemies and their pokemon; a woman with a halberd ordered the others to take her alive. Again, the girl managed to escape the attack—this time by dodging into a guest bedchamber.

Ellie sat against the footboard of the bed. When she closed her stinging eyes, images of fire and death greeted her, as if seared into her retinas. Long minutes she spent calculating her next move, ears tuned to the sounds of the unknown people and pokemon in her home. She realized she had no other option but to leave the room and attempt escape. Rising on stiff and shaking legs, the Fletcher girl moved to the door.

The moment her hand came into contact with the doorknob, searing pain ripped through her flesh. She screamed long and loud; it couldn’t be helped. Ellie tore herself away from the door and the worst of the pain ended abruptly. Shaking, she looked at her hand, but it was just a mess of burned flesh and the smell made her sick. Several minutes later, the door crashed in, split by a pair of metallic-like claws. A soot-streaked excadrill hopped through the remains. Following the mole came a lithe frogadier. A familiar voice called for her, and Gregory Fiaro pulled himself through the doorframe. He tugged off the cloth about his mouth, his red beard and white skin popping out against the rest of him. In rushed tones, the knight explained that the fire had been right outside the door, and that he had heard her screaming. He and his pokemon hurried Ellie out of the burning mansion, where a panicked rapidash were waiting for them. Ellie lost consciousness from pain and exhaustion.

When she finally came to, she was in a hut smelling of herbs. A healer’s hovel, where an audino fretted over her heavily bandaged body. Fiaro and the healer came to her side when she awoke. The healer began unwinding the bandages, talking about how it was the worst injury and he did the best he could to repair the skin. Ellie could hardly comprehend what he was saying. The angry red flesh appeared in pieces, and with each wrap removed, hungry fire moved across her eyes and the sound roared in her ears. It sent her heart hammering. Sweat dotted her brow in seconds. Behind Fiaro, the audino chattered nervously.

The entire wound exposed, the healer asked, “How does it feel?”

“It doesn’t,” she said, her voice raw from screaming, heat, and dehydration. The backwards, slightly tilted ‘F’ emblazoned in her palm seemed to jump out and seize fast to her heart. It consumed her vision while tongues of fire licked at her skin. “It doesn’t.”

    ---

Ellie had escaped her burning manor, yet, as the days went by, news of her family were sparse or nonexistent. A riot had been the cause of the fire, but the armed people largely responsible had been men-at-arms of her father’s own vassal, the Harcourts. A troublesome mix of worry for her family’s safety and of desire to see justice done dominated her thoughts. It was confirmed that her father was taken by the group. The Fletcher matriarch was likely taken as well, but no consensus could be made. Her brother was a complete unknown. Not a soul was sure whether or not the heir to the household was even present during the attack. Ellie could only pray that he wasn’t. Maybe most fortunately was the fact that Ellie Fletcher had been assumed dead. Ellie remembered the woman with the halberd, who was in command of the small host of attackers that drove her into the guest chamber where she was rescued. Among the burned bodies throughout the manor, one belonged to a young woman. Tales of the Fletcher estate being picked to its bones, of its great fire birds being killed or stolen, reached them. To the world, Ellie was dead, and that meant that they were, for now, safe.

Ellie and Fiaro spent their time living in secrecy, draining what little Fletcher gold they had left. The laceration on Ellie’s face had scarred, leaving a white, indented line under her eye. The burn scar contracture on her hand was quite severe. Despite the careful tending, all feeling was lost from the last three fingers, as the burn had eaten away at the nerve endings. She would never be able to make a fist again. It could have been considerably worse—the raised ‘F’ on her palm was a constant reminder. With the injury meant retraining. Luckily, Ellie was left-handed, and thus her swordplay was largely unaffected. She had to relearn the bow with her opposite hand and never returned to her previous skill level. Common tasks became intensely difficult for her.

Months passed as the pair kept on the move, following work and news of her family. On the year anniversary of the attack, a very public execution was announced. The scorned Lord Fletcher would be meeting the executioner’s justice. The Lady Fletcher was to be remarried to a son of Lord Harcourt, and their land and wealth combined. With little time left, Fiaro assembled a small host, those still loyal to her house, while they traveled. If her father were to die, it would leave Ellie the only heir, and the small group was determined to put the Lady Elena back on her seat, for Lionel was still nowhere to be found. The Fletcher girl’s return from death shocked the Harcourts. Nevertheless, they were determined to see justice done. Ellie was certain the common people themselves could see there was no benevolence to the motives of Lord Harcourt; in their desperation, they were happy to take the lesser of two evils. With armor covering her and a sword in her hand, Ellie felt more whole than she had been in a year. And with the need for justice burning within her, she led the tiny red-and-yellow bannered army to the city. On the day of the execution, the Fletcher host was met by Harcourt’s own outside the city gates—plus the angry support of nearly a hundred civilians. Ellie’s group, grossly outnumbered, threw down their weapons. With their little rebellion quelled without a single skirmish, Ellie was hauled away, screaming at their cowardice, as the axe came down on her father’s neck.

    ---

Her title and land revoked, and her head on the list of bounties, Ellie Fletcher was again forced into hiding. Fiaro and his family took her in, as they always did. Yet, Fiaro’s own head was demanded for his direct association with the rebellion, so the entire group lived a down-key life. Fiaro’s wife had come from a long line of rangers, and Ellie and the Fiaros found unquestioned safety within their numbers. In the five months they spent moving across Caledon toward Harper’s Pass, Ellie learned much about the rangers. A full-fledged ranger required graduation, which Ellie neither had the time, inclination, or ability to pursue, but she was able to live among them, aiding them in their work, and experiencing much about new pokemon. In her education as a knight and a noble lady, she had been taught the riding and maintaining of a war mount, the training and usage of birds of prey, and the method at which to catch various pokemon (though that was admittedly limited to which ‘mon’s fur fetched the highest price). Never had the biology of other pokemon ever interested her. There was a lot she had to learn, was a lot about the world that had gone unappreciated. Here with the rangers, she had pokemon partners, albeit temporary ones, who risked their safety to aide her in a mission for no other reason beside this provisional partnership. Pokemon were honorable creatures, far honorable than the house of Fletcher had been.

On the border of the two regions, a Caledonian guard recognized them and blew their cover. Once again fleeing for their lives, the Fiaros and Ellie headed to the ocean southward in the hopes of finding another way into Harper. Caledon was unquestioningly no longer safe for Ellie. A few more months were spent with the rangers. At the port city, Fiaro managed to find one friendly contact who lead the pair to the Redwing, a relatively unknown merchant vessel that would be making its way into Harper in three weeks’ time. Ellie gave the last of her coin to gain safe passage for herself and Fiaro; his family remained behind. Her embarrassingly rusty Harperian was put into practice, as only the captain and his first mate spoke Caledonian. The weeks on the ship tanned Ellie’s skin darker than it had been, built some extra muscle, and sharpened her Harperian. She was speaking it fluently enough as their trip neared its end, but her accent would never be something she could hide.
